Today's Monday Matinee offering is a documentary that highlights the amazing career of Steve Winwood. Steve's success includes stints in historic groups such as The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith (to name a few) and an amazing solo career that continues through today. The documentary is named English Soul, highlighting the soulful quality of Steve's voice. I think you will really enjoy this one.....thanks to the BBC for putting it together!
After a hiatus of nearly two years, The Black Crowes returned to the stage last night in Manchester, England. The group, which now features multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene, turned in a 2:20 set that focused on their best-known songs from throughout their career. Here's the setlist... I am way behind on my Forty Years Ago Today posts. Although February 1973 was not a stellar month for album releases, there were several that I thought we should discuss. So here we go....... Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation This was the second album from BOC and, if anything, it was even stranger than their first one. The song I have for you today sounds like the Beach Boys on speed, if the Beach Boys ever decided to sing about Necromancy. I know that sounds strange but guess what.......it [...]
100 minuti comunque [...]
TOPS - Turn Your Love Around 1. I'm 16. I'm on a Vespa, my mom on back. We're driving to buy bread, zipping down the hilly paved road at about 40 km/h. As we crest one hill, a scooter shoots out from behind a fence. My mother screams into my ear and it startles me more than the motorbike. We hit - hard - and I flip over the top of the handlebars and sail through the air. Time stops. I'm sure, fully positive, that I will die. I know this the same [...]

Soul Men (from left): Eric Burdon, John Mayall, Jimi Hendrix and Winwood (plus one, Carl Wayne of the Move) "White people don't have soul." Whoever launched that urban, suburban and country myth and spread it around the world, possibly deterring would-be blue-eyed soul singers everywhere, must have forgotten to forward the memo to the UK. More than any other country in the world -- even the United States, birthplace of soul music, which began as negro spirituals during the slavery era, before blossoming into gospel, blues, jazz, [...]

“Americans will put up with anything provided it doesn’t block traffic.”
This morning the alarm woke me at 4:30. That's right, 4:30, the most ungodly of hours, which is a bit of a play on the day as I got that early so I could leave at 5 to go to the 20th anniversary mass for my father. It is nearly beyond belief to realize he has been gone that long. I think of him often, and we still miss him every day. The mass was in a church about an hour and a half from here, close to where he and my mother used to live. My sister from Colorado [...]

Two Hour Traffic - Foolish Blood
Two Hour Traffic - Foolish Blood (February 19) - Canadian band revels in a resurgence of classic power pop with their new Blood , combining the energy of 70's punk and new wave with a bracing shot of retro Brit Invasion melody, harmony and shiny guitar riffs...An altered lineup and a new producer Darryl Neudorf (Neko Case, the Sadies, the New Pornographers) finds the band focusing to an even greater degree on a sound unfettered by trendy indie rock hipness. Lead track "Last Star" is a good example of what the [...]

Tour Dates: Desaparecidos Drop Dates
While it remains to be seen whether or not Conor Oberst was serious about hanging up his Bright Eyes moniker, the wordy singer-songwriter has decided to revive his old side-project - Desaparecidos . The politically charged, punk-y hardcore band have only seen sparse action over the last decade since the release their lone studio album Read Music/Speak Spanish all the way back in 2002. This past summer Oberst dusted the band off, releasing the single MariKKKopa / Backsell , which took aim at Arizona's controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the state's immigration laws, as well [...]

Friday Word Of The Week #10 – Empty
Today I feel empty. Too many things to do, too many people to keep happy, and no time for me or the things that I want to do. Fortunately for me I have lots of songs about being empty and today is the day of the week when I share those songs with you.....my loyal readers/listeners. Let's kick things off with my favorite Empty song of all time, and the one that best captures my feelings this evening, Running On Empty by Jackson Browne. This is a great live performance from his 1977 tour. [...]
