One of the fun things about where I work is that we know how to celebrate the true spirit of ridiculous holidays like Valentine's Day. I don't think a single one of us wore a red shirt today...but man did we all have fun coming up with themed playlists! So while I continue my quest to make it through all of the Magnetic Fields ' 69 Love Songs (slightly different from last year's quest - which was to pull off a dramatic reading of Tenacious D's "Fuck Her Gently" at our school's Erotic Poetry [...]
St. Petersburg, FL - ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead have a reputation for destroying their equipment by the end of each performance. It's gotten them banned from most venues in Austin. They're also notorious liars , propagating their own mythology. But their stage show at Jannus Landing on Saturday night seemed unrehearsed. After The Blood Brothers' incendiary set, half the crowd cleared. Roadies with mullets set up Trail of Dead's equipment and Jason Reece approached the mic, joking that his bandmates were off doing crack. They found their way to [...]

A lot of the blog-press about this album seems to be centering around it's seeming schizophrenia. They're still pissed after "World's Apart" and it's departure from "Source Tags and Codes". I, for one, loved "World's Apart". I thought that the exploration of so many different sounds was refreshing, here was a band not content to attempt to create some sort of cohesive theme album *cough* MCR *cough*, and yet, "World's Apart", much like this one, takes these disparate pieces and forms a whole that would have been impossible for a lesser band to pull off. [...]

This is a list of stuff I've been listening to, and while I suppose you could indentify a few common threads, the bottom line is mainly that they are all Jeff-ceptable. To make up for a lack of introspection into the specific quality that ties them all together in my admiration, I offer a whole bunch. All armchair psychoanalyis from the peanut gallery will be carefully considered... Pavement - "Type Slowly" (Live at the Tibetan Freedom Concert) Matador Records is not letting [...]
Yeah, you all know I have the unholiest of unholy loves for Interpol and the National. The even unholier tertiary love I maintain is so predictably dark and twisted that I dare not speak its name. No, it's not Marilyn Manson, dorks...even if that spread in this fall's Conde Nast Fashion Rocks suppliment issue was awesome. It's Trail of Dead . The only thing that would make for even more unholy love is if the perverse rumor that Carlos D was relocating to play second fiddle...uh...bass to Neil Busch [...]

On this Friday the 13th, where superstitions run abound and all that other sort of karma comes back and shows up on your doorstep, I find it quite appropriate to discuss something dark, disturbing, and maybe even dangerous. Of course, what better band to talk about than ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead. As one of my more favorite bands of this day and age, I, like many, was very disappointed with the band's last effort, "Worlds Apart." But I can't really blame the band for the way that it turned out. When you're sitting on [...]
"Who goes to the beach in a suit? Oh, silly. What were ya thinking?" -- Tom, on Mac McCaughan's ill-advised beachside attire "It’s The Mamas and the Papas -- it’s not The Mamas and Papas. It’s an insult to the Papas." -- Tom, scolding Spike for omitting a crucial article "Keep going, Weird Al, even though I hate you.†-- Tom, admiring Yankovic's persistence, if not his parodies "That’s one small step for a baked man, one giant leap for [...]
This Bee Thousand cover appears on the forthcoming And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead album So Divided , due out November 14th on Interscope . "Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory" is given the anthemic treatment here with strings, brass, and tympani and is extended by a full 30 seconds to 2:14. That, in my opinion, is really the only thing wrong with the song; this cover is too slow in comparison: The original, despite being just about as close as Robert Pollard gets to a [...]

(It shouldn't have.) Well, I've moved to Atlanta, the bustling cultural capital of the southeast. There have been shows galore: Sufjan, Band of Horses, (smog), Ladytron, etc etc. I've seen none of them. Since I'm without a car for the moment, the commute to GPHQ is a bit of a bitch, too. I can imagine how awful it must be for Niina. Joel is busy and still hard at work on his July mix, which ought to be a fucking revelation . Mike... well, we haven't seen him for months and there's this odd smell coming from [...]

I'm never really a big fan of free compilation CD's but the good folks over at Insound managed to put together a one-stop listening affair for current indie music. Big hitters include TV On The Radio, The Decemberists, The Rapture, and many others. (I also like the fact that it was free to all and therefore I won't be getting any copyright letters). Thought I'd pass it along.... ::: The Big Sleep - Murder ::: Tokyo Police Club - Shoulders & Arms [...]

I've been slacking this week on the blog especially when considering all the new music I heard this past week. I've been kind of busy I suppose. I did buy some drums so thats kind of cool, I have them mostly setup minus a thing or two. I've been listening to the new Beck, Hold Steady, Four Tet, Mercury Rev, Arab Strap, and Cold War Kids but now I finally found the time to listen to the new the new Trail of Dead album So Divided . I'm liking it more than the previous album Worlds [...]
Alright, so the blogging world is still laughing histerically over Pitchfork's review of the new Jet album. In case you haven't seen the review - check it out here. Thanks to YouTube and other forms of media today, this may be the greatest album review of all time. It pretty much summed [...]
