These aren't reviews, these are unedited testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. Can we get a witness?] Words by Jim Album: Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward Artist: The Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band [...]
I am so sorry. I have been seriously delinquent in posting here at the blog. I wouldn't blame you if you thought I'd packed it in. I suppose I should put up some Christmas music to make up for it, shouldn't I? 'Tis the season and all that. I've actually had this non-traditional chrimbo mix made up for nearly two months. I made it for a friend who lost her sister last year right before the holiday. She told me she couldn't bear to listen to any traditional Christmas music this [...]
Here's an ooold fave of mine. Right up the APC alley, I reckon. Simply ingenious. ;)

Photography by aysegul t. As work continues to kick my ass, I only become more and more grateful for the wonderful members of our little music brigade . Not only are their recommendations always spot on, but during times when I can't even think straight, it's nice to know I can load up something and just enjoy. This is the case with Society VIP Fulltext's suggestion Pale Young Gentlemen and latest effort Black Forest (tra la la) . Normally, "lush" and Wisconsin [...]

(photos of the sculpture installation on the Lower East Side by Brad Downey and Mike Wrobel) Downey was in town for a flash recently, but long enough to team up with Mike Wrobel to make and install an 8 ft. high bench on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He asked me to document it for him, since the lifespan of this type of work is always questionable. Soon after I took these photos, the piece was removed by the DOT. But only after it made the news. Check out the articles in the NY [...]

"Can't do it. Can't do it tonight. Can't do it. [ whimpers, moans] I'm scared. [ brief cry-moan] I can't do the show tonight. [ Cowardly Lion sound ] I'm scared. I don't wanna do the show." -- Tom, shortly before breathing easy, getting on the ride, and believing that he can do the show just like any other DJ! "You could set the atomic clock to Michael Anthony's bomp bomp bomp." -- Tom on the portly bassist's trademark reliability "It shouldn't be a [...]

Annuals Perform at Spaceland Tonight Tonight's Pick: Annuals / Jim Noir / Tralala @ Spaceland ($8) – Annuals are a group of kids in their early 20s from North Carolina. Their new album had a ton of hype before it even hit the streets. Does it live up to the hype? Like most records – yes and no. When you hear the first song you might think about Arcade [...]

Jay Farrar Plays the Troubadour Tonight Another good night for all types of music..... Tonight's Pick: Gob Iron ( Jay Farrar & Anders Parker ) @ Troubadour ($17) – For the twang fans. Believe it or not, I was never a huge alt-country fan. I like some Uncle Tupelo and Wilco's AM (their only real alt-country album) is pretty good. Over the years I've grown to appreciate the genre a [...]

Well, I stole the photo, so I guess I should post the damn link... Hooray! It's the first of December! The advent of Advent! The moratorium on things Christmassy has been lifted! Cue engorgement on atrocities like egg nog and fruitcake! Bring on fevered, last-minute shopping for novelty stocking stuffers! Roll out and repeat ad nauseam syrupy-stringed muzak versions of "Winter Wonderland"! Better get me a bucket... Heck, old Snow Miser even dumped a ton of snow on us here in Vancouver to jam it down our throats. [...]
Tralala would like you to notice the lack of the "the" before their band name. It would make sense to see that pretentious little word affixed to their name since, at first glance, Tralala is a girl band that comes with the usual fashions of handclaps and harmonies that their predecessors used so well. But then at second glance, Tralala winds up, bends a hip, and shimmies away to the middle of

Camp Radio / Camp Radio ( Kelp ) I think I said once the best way to get me to listen to something cold was to send me it on a lovely slab of vinyl - Ottawa's Camp Radio got the message, loud and clear! I got their self-titled debut on a nice and thick 180g pressing, packaged in a gorgeous full-colour, matte-finish gatefold sleeve... whew. Easily some of the nicest packaging of anything I've gotten my hands on lately. But, [...]
They just rock, is all. I’d interviewed* the Dolls’ Sylvain Sylvain earlier that day for Brooklyn Vegan** (you can read that here), and one of the questions that didn’t make it in was: “Are you still having fun?â€
