People usually associate the DC music scene with the legendary hardcore and post-punk bands on Dischord records: Minor Threat, Fugazi, Rites of Spring, etc. I lived in the capital city area for almost 20 years and while I loved the hardcore bands I always thought it was a shame that the music of the city was so pigeonholed. Most people were unaware that the music of chocolate city had evolved beyond the “Dischord sound." It was a vibrant place with bands exploring and mixing numerous genres and styles, and now a new book that explores those innovative and daring bands [...]

Thrill Jockey is planning one hell of a twentieth anniversary celebration for itself. Actually, make that celebrations . The venerable Chicago-based record label is throwing itself birthday shows in its hometown as well as LA, London, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Baltimore, and our fair city. The lineup for the San Francisco show is typical of these gigs' awesomeness, including Liturgy , Wooden Shjips , Trans Am , and Barn Owl , to name [...]
It’s generally excepted, that when away from for an extended period from the population from which one would generally select their lovers, that all bets are off. Prison would certainly be an example…or perhaps the navy. San Francisco during the California Gold Rush of the mid 19th century would also be able to stake it’s [...]

Trans AM should have been the subject being discussed when the words "you'd like it if you had robot ears" was stated. While most of their songs are strictly instrumental, they have been known to use some altered vocals on tracks, including this classic, "Futureworld". I had the pleasure of catching the second half of their set down at the 9:30 Club when they played with Les Savy Fav a little while back. Even if you can't get down with the vocals, Trans AM's ability to create unbelievably impressive music is undeniable. Now, from the video, you'd think this is [...]

By Kriston Capps | Photos by Liz Gorman Don’t be fooled by all the Lycra and L.A. Looks. Underneath it all, Trans Am is still a D.C. hardcore band. Over a decade after the release of the band’s genre-marking album, Futureworld , the Bethesda, Md.–born trio’s real retro appeal has more to do with D.C. punk than Euro krautrock. On Friday, Trans Am proved its District bona fides at the 9:30 Club , [...]

[Photos by acidjack. The photos are bad, but the recording is great.] The band Trans Am reintroduced themselves in a big way with their seminal 1999 album, Futureworld nine years into their career. For the first time, the post-rock band introduced vocoder-enhanced vocals to their rock/krautrock hybrid. In many ways, this record, with its Atari graphics cover, augured the chiptunes genre, with its propulsive, fast-paced rock attack and robotic vocals. It also showcased a little bit of the band's sense of humor, which you can get a dose of on their band page [...]
One of those rare events is taking place tonight at the Talking Head. Don't miss out. Trans Am will be performing their classic album Futureworld (which has just been re-released/re-mastered... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]
Words and coverage by Rick Moslen Last year a tight-knit collective of local artists, musicians, DJ’s, and all-around sweet folks threw Pittsburgh an inaugural music festival blending predominantly electronic music with art and technology, the likes of which no one could’ve anticipated. Since then VIA hasn’t disappeared. They book monthly dance parties and concerts throughout Pittsburgh under the moniker, “VIA Presents...” This is all-fantastic, but when the hell is the next festival? Judging by the flyers hanging around town, for five days starting next week they’ll take over Pittsburgh’s music scene again to grant [...]

Dum Dum Girls - Wasted Away The DD girls lay off the reverb and let the drumbeat drive you off the cliff. It's simple, yet effective. - Ellis Islands - Window Ellis Islands is an enigma wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in a burrito. Seriously, this artist sent us Window , and provided little else. We know that Ellis Islands is a musician who has kicked around in different bands over the past few years. [...]

The Felice Brothers is a band usually identified through a series of comparisons. After touring with pseudo-politically-conscious Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band during the height of Obama mania in 2008, the Catskills natives and their self-titled LP of that year drew inevitable comparisons to Bob Dylan and The Band. Three years and two more albums later, the country-tinged folk group continues to string together junkyard accordions and flutes with standard piano-based songs. Though the band members are all in their 20s or early 30s, their songs are like the wistful, bitter woes of a country grandpa smoking a [...]
