I'm finding myself blogging less and less these days because 1) I don't have the time, and 2) most of what I'm finding that's interesting is showing up on my del.icio.us list . But every now and then I think about what I've been digging and then lists emerge. Like this one. L.L. Bean Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer : This was a Christmas gift from my parents and I love it. It's the bee's knees, as they say. Each morning now, as I stroll into the kitchen I can catch a glimpse at [...]

MP3: Trans Am - North East Rising Sun I've heard bits and pieces of Trans Am before, but the other day I got full on with their "Sex Change" lp. While I'm not completely in love with it, it has some killer moments. "North East Rising Sun" is flawless though. Get in a car, turn this up and drive fast. Get pulled over. It all rules. { buy trans am recordings from insound }

Trans Am released a brand new album this week entitled Sex Change. A mixture of retro-synths, krautrockish rhythms, sometimes heavy guitars and light pop harmonies, which probably inspired their often-claimed affiliation with the blurrish "genre" of post-rock. It's quite a fine record; I give you two tracks that, apart from the pop-melodic guitar parts, sound so much like NEU! it's suspicious. Trans Am - 4,738 Regrets (Thrill Jockey 2007) Trans Am – Sex Change / Thrill Jockey The other day while working in my cubicle, a Chromeo track came two-stepping through my speakers which never fails to send me into a head bouncing fit of giggles at it's sheer awesomeness. My adjacent co-worker though was immensely confused by my devotion to a sound so heartedly 80s cheese, a decade I have proclaimed my disgust for time and again to the entire office. I attempted to explain my position that [...]

New releases from a couple of long-time Thrill Jockey staples hit store shelves today...futuristic robo-rockers Trans Am are back at it with their 8th(!) full-length record, Sex Change, and Chicago's #1 glam rocker, Bobby Conn , is back with his latest opus titled King for a Day . Also, as we previewed last week , another local label favorite, The High Llamas (Drag City), drop their latest release today titled Can Cladders . [...]

On this day in 1978, the first ever computer bulletin board system (or CBBS in geek speak) was established right here in Chicago by local computer hobbyist Ward Christensen. According to Wikipedia lore, the idea had been floating around for some time amongst Christiensen and his fellow colleagues, but it wasn't until they got snowed in from a record setting blizzard early that year that they had the time to hunker down and crunch out all the code for the project. So, in honor of this truly geek-tastic moment in computer history, we present this week's [...]
Hey everyone, guess what! I've got a brand new blog for you to check out. It's called DoseNation, and it covers all aspects of modern drug culture - from art, music & literature to breakthroughs in pharmaceutical research; from shamanism...

Following up their most serious and unabashedly political record, Trans Am take a sudden spin to the side of spontaneity and electro tweaked fun. The band's latest Thrill Jockey release, Sex Change is full of slinky bass lines and crisp and crunchy synth squeaks caught in a car wreck with fuzzed rock guitars and robotic disco beats. The band recorded parts in New Zealand and some at Oneida's Okropolis studio with an emphasis on using unfamiliar instruments and not dwelling on perfection. The band takes their futurism and tosses it into the ashes of grunge. The [...]
This year sees Thrill Jockey's synthy post-rockers release their eighth album, and it's a step up from their last, George Bush-samping effort. Shifting between motorik grooves ("First Words") and New Order workouts ("Exit Management Solution"), Sex Change tweaks their strengths...
He who asks, shall receive. Or something. One of my wonderful regulars asked if I had any Peel sessions from the uber rockin disco party that are the TRANS AM, and luckily, I did. Unfortunately and foolishly i've misplaced one of the tracks, but the other three are so good I thought they were still worth posting. The session was the bands only session for Peel, and was recorded on the 26th January 2000. By the way, the missing track is a version of I Want It All . Damn my disorganised music collection! For the uninformed, [...]
So hush little robot. Einsturzende Neubauten- -Feder Vice Liars say people with the Neubauten t-shirts always stand at the front in their gigs. I reckon they also know how to lose it at Kompakt...
