When I first picked up the plank of wood I had the cheek to call a guitar, I hadn't yet mastered changing from a D to an A and back again before I realised something was missing. I needed something, anything, to disguise the bum notes from the badly-played chords I was trying to strangle out of my instrument at parent-bothering volume through my wee practice amp. That something was the fuzzbox. What a revelation! I could play along to most of The Buzzcocks ' What Do I Get and mangle a passable version of Everybody's [...]
So here we go. South by Southwest 2013 kicked off today in my adopted home town of Austin, Texas. Scotland will be well represented over the next 10 days or so with around 12 Scottish companies here for the Interactive festival, at least 1 really cool film, and 12 great bands. I've tried to list [...]

Some of you may have read this before (2009 and 2011, to be exact). 254 years young today. I love Burns. Had him drummed into me at school. In fact, anyone who goes to school in the West of Scotland knows all about him. And as a teacher, I love banging on about him to my class. Here’s a brief potted history for any uninitiated out there… Born on the 25th January, 1759 in Alloway (now a posh part of Ayr). Scrawny boy, wasn’t expected to live long. Helped his dad [...]
Field Music are a real enigma. Nominees for this year's Mercury Music Prize, like most who appear on the list they occupy a strange place somewhere between cult band and the mainstream. A hotchpotch of clanging riffs with prog leanings, their music isn't all that original. Their music isn't all that groundbreaking either. Plenty of other artists have used similar instruments to similar effect. And their music, like plenty of artists before them, is not that well-known outwith those in the know (think this generation's XTC). But their music is colossal. And tuneful. And therefore radio-friendly. And by rights they should [...]

I bought this tape in the Dalston Oxfam shop some time ago. It was a free compilation tape which came with the May 1996 issue of Select Magazine . It's unique because it has a slightly electro rock version of a Moby track that he did for this compilation only - so you can't find it anywhere else. And it's quite good. There is also a track from Cable which was recorded with John Peel which is only on this tape as well. Unfortunately the sound quality is not [...]

The very warm and bright studio sound puts an oil lamp glow over Trashcan Sinatras ’ single People , the third single off of their 2009 album In The Music . A melancholy synth-glum Echo and the Bunnyman-influenced verse is followed by a major key love song response with a rich vocal harmony for the chorus refrain “People, people will fall in love”. It’s the sort of chorus where people join hands and sway. There’s a heart-warming understatedness to the single, which makes it easy to listen to but at the [...]

On commence avec une belle découverte, les français de Im Takt et leur ultra efficace Fat Billy qui n'a sur ce coup rien mais alors rien à envier à James Murphy... On compte les jours avant la sortie de 'Within And Without' , le premier album de Washed Out . Eyes Be Closed nous aide à patienter... Le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est que The War On Drugs [...]

Trash Can Sinatras, "Charlie's Atlas"

Six Of The Best is a semi-regular feature that pokes, prods and persuades your favourite bands, bards and barometers of hip opinion to tell us six of the best tracks they’ve ever heard. The tracks could be mainstream million-sellers or they could be obfuscatingly obscure, it doesn’t matter. The only criteria set is that, aye, they must be Six of the Best . Think of it like a mini, groovier version of Desert Island Discs… Number 4 [...]

[Just in time for the beginning of baseball season — and the arrival of the Baseball Project — your humble blogger returns from some time in a distant land, away from the noise. That one mixtape I made for driving through the Midwest was pretty killer, though ...] Already, my most difficult show-going decision of spring: ► Scottish songsmiths Trashcan Sinatras gave a memorable performance last summer (the photo is from a June show at the Key Club) [...]
