one of my favorite bands since i started this little site 7 years ago, travel by sea, was made up of kyle kersten and brian kraft. when they created travel by sea, they had never met, just exchanged recordings and they would work on their parts and bring other folks in to fill in the gaps. they made three freakin great records, shadows rise, days of my escape and two states and the blindness that follows - very highly recommended! either way, travel by sea is no more, or maybe just on and indefinite hiatus. kersten has teamed with pedal [...]
Greater Pacific, Distance (2011) from Henkydory on Vimeo . [...]

One of my favourite albums of the last twelve months was the superb Two States and The Blindness That Follows by Travel By Sea , this EP from Greater Pacific features a trio of guys from Travel By Sea, Kyle Kersten’s vocal is instantly recognisable, John Phinney’s aching steel envelops the tracks and Mike Cusick keeps times on the drums, so there’s a certain familiarity here and fans of Two States and The Blindness That Follows will love this EP. [...]

TRAVEL BY SEA - TWO STATES AND THE BLINDNESS THAT FOLLOWS AUTUMN TONE I didn’t get a chance to listen to the new Travel By Sea release until after my best of the year list was published, so I would like to amend the Record Dept. Top 25 albums of 2010 list with their latest album Two States and the Blindness That Follows coming [...]
this is more of a heads up than anything else. on 1/25, kyle kersten and john phinney of travel by sea will release the debut EP of greater pacific on the fabulous Yer Bird Records , stemming from their shared "love of pedal steel and the leisurely sigh of country folk". if i knew nothing else of the duo, that statement alone would have me forking over some cash to listen. i'm not going to give you a preview today, but i'll tell you that you're gonna want to pick up these six tracks when [...]

Couple of holiday freebies you ought to know about. A three track EP from Travel by Sea the guys who released one of my favourite albums of the year is available here Get in the Christmas spirit with a honky tonk song about getting dumped on Christmas and a folk pop ode to water freezing in your toilet because you have no heat in your house . From Boca Chica [...]
Back in October we told you about Travel by Sea‘s new album, Two States and the Blindness that Follows, which, if you recall, the band called “their most accomplished release yet” as well as “a collaboration based record that is not afraid to rock and is clearly about the journey, not the destination.” Two States and the Blindness that Follows is the first album to include new members Dan Moore (bass/vocal), John Phinney (pedal steel/guitar/banjo), Mike Cusick (drums), and Andrew Morrison (guitar), and the album landed on Captains Dead’s Top 11 Records of 2010 list. Not bad. [...]

well, i guess this is it, huh? 2010 is just about done, and while i usually wait a little longer to do my end of the year list, i figured at this point it was pretty solidly impacted in my brain. so, there was really no point in waiting. oh, im sure ill hear something between now and the end of the year that will blow my mind, cause thats just the way shit goes. i am not going to talk to much re: the list, and just let the songs i have provided do the talking. why fuck up [...]

i have been sitting on talking about travel by sea's newly released two states and the blindness that follows for a good month now, maybe. their 08 release days of my escape showed up at number 8 on my best of the year list. so, why have i been sitting on it? no idea, its not for lack of inspiration, cause the record is really quite awesome. you know i am not awesome with words, and this is one of those records that i wish could just do the talking/writing for me. i wish [...]

Update on one of my favourite albums of the year - it's now available to buy and download from.... CDBaby and Bandcamp Travel by Sea - The Road Travel by Sea - Eventually

Back in July, we posted the song “Split Second Time” by Travel By Sea. I described their music as “beautiful, beautiful music,” and I meant every word. Travel By Sea is back with a new album, Two States and the Blindness that Follows, and the band calls it “their most accomplished release yet.” The track, “Light in the Darkness,” is a good example of what you’ll find on that record: beauty, intimacy, a little twinge of country, folk, rock, and a whole lot of vision. Their official website describes [...]

I have been following the Travel By Sea "musical project" for a few years now and they have just released their new album "Two States and the Blindness That Follows" yesterday. When I say project, it is due to the bands original premise/situation of the two founding members, Kyle Kersten and Brian Kraft, creating great music while being located in two very separate areas of the United States. This is how they recorded the earlier music...completely separate and sending clips, samples, backgrounds back and forth for the other to hear as they couldn't actually play the music together in the [...]
What began as a songwriting experiment spanning two states, a hi-speed Internet connection, and a shared love of dark folk music, has since morphed into a living, breathing band. Witnessing Travel by Sea's growth over the past four years has seen the project, between co-founders Kyle Kersten and Brian Kraft, steadily take on attributes that [...]

In terms of writing methodology, California/Denver based Travel by Sea 's first record was proof positive that the internet meant time spent in the same location and actually meeting your musical partner were no longer requirements for a cohesive, powerful experience. Song writer Kyle Kersten and all around musical mad man Brian Kraft passed ideas back and forth like dorm room pot heads - or more accurately, musical pen pals - and the end result was a desolate LP ( Shadows Rise ) that used fractured melodies to set the tone and loneliness and heartache [...]

Two States and the Blindness That Follows released later this month is the new album from Travel by Sea and for me their best work-to-date, the bands sound has evolved with the line up that has added Dan Moore (bass), John Phinney (pedal steel, banjo), Mike Cusick (drums), Andrew Morrison (guitar) to the original pairing of singer/songwriter Kyle Kersten and multi-instrumentalist Brian Kraft, the guys have honed the songs over the last couple of years performing them live, if that doesn't sound revelatory to you then a short history [...]
I first wrote about Travel By Sea back in June 2008 . Since then I've been keeping a watchful eye on their progress and it's with great pleasure that I can announce they have a brand, spanking new album to self release on 19th October called Two States And The Blindness That Follows via Cdbaby, itunes etc. Having given the album literally dozens of listens, I come away each time with a feeling of complete satisfaction, from the very first punchy guitar riff on the simply incredible, dreamy opening track eventually , you are [...]
Travel By Sea - Eventually from Buzzy on Vimeo . both of these songs are presumably gonna be travel by sea's upcoming record, two states and the blindness that follows , which is due out this aug/sept. definitely looking forward to that. here are a couple of tracks from one of my favorite records from a couple years back and off their days of my escape which was released by autumn tone. truth was split second time [...]

There's a bar/restaurant in Claremont, CA. called The Press. It's a great place to hang out... good food, spirits, and there's live music to boot. I've been there a few times and have always enjoyed the atmosphere. If you live in the area and would like a relaxing spot to hang and just breathe, that's the place. I was checking out their calendar of events tonight and saw that a band called Travel By Sea is slotted to play this Friday night. I asked myself the inevitable question, "Self? What would a band called [...]
We lost another great talent this weekend. Yet another tragic loss. That is what immediately came to mind when I read of Mark Linkous's suicide last night; that and the recent passing of Vic Chesnutt in December. This morning I pulled out a number of Linkous' albums and and re-discovered my favorite track off That [...]
Damn, its already been a brutal year in indie music. First Vic Chestnutt's Christmas day death by apparent self-induced overdose of muscle relaxants. Then Jay Reatard's death on Jan. 13 by apparent accidental overdose of cocaine and alcohol. And last night I learned via Pitchfork that Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse took his own life. This one hit me pretty hard. I saw Sparklehorse a few years ago, right around the time I started posting concert reviews on MySpace. Here is the [...]
