In the course of my research about the Scat Records discography posts (one and two), I discovered a few nuggets from the past of Finn's Motel's Joe Thebeau. First is a MySpace page for The Finns , his '90s band. The profile has very few friends, so go show it some love. Even better, here are two music videos, for the songs "She Wears Black" and "Perspective." Man, I love late-'80s/early-'90s power-pop. (Magnolia Summer, live on Saturday night) Besides seeing The Dark Knight , that is. (I have not gone yet. Yes, I know.) This weekend, what I did: *Friday: Tiffany at Home Nightclub *Saturday: Magnolia Summer/Treeweasels at Off Broadway. Verdict: TW before its time, reminded me hardcore of Drive-By Truckers, with a dash of later-era Joe Strummer, along with late-'80s Southern jangle. M. Summer new stuff sounds fantastic; urgent and brisk. R.E.M. cover ("Finest Worksong") dovetailed neatly with the message [...]

(by me, taken in Off Broadway's ladies bathroom) This Saturday sees a reunion of sorts for the Treeweasels , a long-ago St. Louis group. Says Roy Kasten in this week's paper : [The Treeweasels] sounded like a punky, countrified R.E.M. with some Pere Ubu singles melted over their four-track, though they couldn't really be bothered to be oblique.
