"Lush, moody and provocative, the songs on Photo Album of Complex Relationships are cinematic soundscapes built upon instrumentation that includes cello, piano, flute, bass and percussion, with Trentalage's voice - velvety and emotive - as the foundation and centerpiece." - read more Photo Album of Complex Relationships is available on iTunes now and is due out in stores on October 3. I don't know what's more fun: sifting through the Metro D Inbox (there's about 300 e-mails chilling in there right now), watching a trashy Steven Seagal movie on AMC (I thought the C stood for Classic), or being at work at 1 AM. The simple joys in my night have been hearing about JK enjoying his first Ben Harper experience, revisiting SSPU's Pikul after talking to Frat ("Kissing Families" is such a beast), and giving a listen to Trentalange and Canada. They both have a softer sound, but Trentalange has a little more of an edge to it. [...]

Matthew Barney - Drawing Restraint 9 [film still] (2005) A life of complex relationships hardens in layers of disguised ritualistic pourings of moods over warmed expectations. Stop for a simple lunchhour tea between pseudonym phone calls and you find yourself severed in an ocean of regret. At least your store-bought emotion is real; with profitable obligations, papertrail tails, and drunken alarms to keep you awake and on time. [...]

Colour Revolt-Mattress Under Water This drifting, sometimes tinkling, sometimes flowing, sometimes exploding song bends and shapes into a living moving picture. A piece of wonderous brushing harmonies and emotions all wrapped up into one song. With the occassional breaking, gasping chorus with a shock of clashing, thundered guitars and screams, and the line of the song mesmerizing to listen to, at the very least. And, it does not hurt at all that ex-Fletcher Colour Revolt 's debut EP will be released on Tiny Evil, home to other Bubble Death favorites such [...]
Can Vinyl Survive? Yea - Nay Great articles from the Resident Advisor site. IMHO, there is no medium for DJing that has the tactile responsiveness of vinyl, not even DJ CD players or technology like FinalScratch. I do have to admit though that vinyl is bulky, heavy, and expensive. It has become fairly easy for emerging DJs to abandon vinyl altogether. The stigma of digital is all but gone.
THIS WEEK'S FINDS week of Aug. 6-12 "La Cage Appat" - Peppertree So how much fun is this song? We get, out of the gate, a wonderful, mysterious tension built by a question-answer style alternation between a gently strummed electric guitar and a chimey organ. This kicks open into a melodramatic series of now-the-guitar-is-chimey chords, then pulls back again into a restrained verse, in French, reinforcing the song's engaging sense of back-and-forth, of doing this then that, being here then there. See too how the musical accent is all off the [...]
I'm gonna take a quick Superhero break because if I don't post some of this stuff I'm going to be crushed by the weight of my own mailbag . . . Sometimes I’m torn. I get lots of hits when I post stuff by guys who have established themselves to one degree or another, and it’s certainly gratifying to know y’all are out there and reading my stuff. But on the other hand, the primary purpose of this corner is to hype the unhyped, and give a voice to those who need a fan base. [...]

"Having a substance should not be considered a crime, because so far it's victimless. If you want to talk about distributing substances that are lethal, yeah, that oughta be brought up, but then, let's be serious. Tobacco is far ahead of anything else. Alcohol is second. Hard drugs are way down the bottom, and furthermore most drug use, though it's very harmful for the person, has very little social effect. The crime associated with hard drugs is mostly a consequence of criminalization. [Q: so should we go after the people who make cigarettes?] If the principle is, let's not get [...]
Today I’m bringing up a chalk-block of female singers whose voice is perfectly crafted for remixes and guest appearances. Feist (the shining star of the Broke Social Scene collective) and Barbara Trentalange (former alum of Crooked Fingers and Spyglass) are on opposite ends of the spectrum with their latest releases. Feist is riding high after the Let it Die release. Her vocals and arrangements seem timeless and allow her to cross genres and it is why her remix and collaborations album - Open Season â€" had me asking [...]

Download: Trentalange -- "Lonely Land" Former singer of the Seattle band Spyglass and a member of the most recent Crooked Fingers lineup, Barbara Trentalage has put out one emotionally stirring record of atmospheric rock that recalls the early Peter Gabriel work as well as the storytelling aspects of Nick Cave. Trentalange wrote, recorded and performed the vast majority of the album herself. Members of Crooked Fingers, Spyglass, and Head Like a Kite added flourishes before Trentalange joined producer Martin Feveyear [...]
