Frank Yang Maybe listening to Jesus Of Cool and Labour Of Lust weren't the best warm-ups for Nick Lowe's show at The Phoenix on Monday night. After all, he was many many years removed from being the young pub-rock firebrand who recorded those first two records, having settled comfortably into the role of professorial pop singer-songwriter - a guise that's suited his still-potent pen quite nicely, as last year's The Old Magic proved. But if you [...]

trespasserswilliam.com The new year is traditionally held as a time for fresh starts and new beginnings, but it can also be a symbolic time for drawing things to an end or perhaps more appropriately, wrapping up something to begin something else. Not that that was the only reason it wasn't a complete surprise when Seattle duo Trespassers William took to Facebook this week to announce that the band would be shelved for the foreseeable future. Despite completely winning me over with their second album Different Stars [...]

We follow over a hundred blogs, and listen to everything that's sent to us, but we can't claim to be completists here at Cover Lay Down. The world of folk is too big, and the borders fluid and everchanging; even if we had the luxury of listening full-time, we'd surely miss some of the good stuff. But 2011 was a year which found us particularly removed from the outside world. New teaching assignments at the desperately struggling inner-city school where I teach had my head down for weeks on end, developing [...]

Let's not beat around the proverbial bush here, we love Lotte Kestner (Anna-Lynne Williams) around here. A lot. Yesterday, Lotte Kestner released a selection of stripped down 'solo' Trespassers William songs on her Bandcamp page. There are 10 tracks that span more than a few years/albums and each one is focused directly at the stunningly ethereal vocals of this west coast siren. But instead of the mythological siren, she will not devour you whole but instead provide you a rare opportunity to listen to her songs laid bare in their stark beauty. This is truly a 'quiet moment' [...]

Sean Pecknold We're a week out from the release of one of the most-anticipated records of the year - Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes - and as has become commonplace, the album is available to stream a week before it goes on sale at NPR . A couple of listens in and all the key ingredients that made the debut a smash are still in place: Robin Pecknold's otherworldly voice, the ridiculously lush and immaculate harmonies, the blankets of reverb imported from some Pacific northwest mountaintop, [...]

Trespassers William - Love Is Blindness [U2] | zs

You know her. You love her. And if you're anything like me, you probably act like a tween at Justin Bieber concert when you hear she has a new project coming. Or that she might be hitting a city near you alongside her partner in life/art Matt Brown in their world renowned duo Trespassers William. Yes, this is Anna-Lynne Williams. And she is awesome. I have been ever so fortunate enough lately to have had Anna contribute to my charity based book/compilation album, both of which she is [...]
Say whhhhhhhhat! A new Smiths tribute album is in the works via American Laundromat Records shamelessly titled Please, Please, Please: A Tribute To The Smiths. Some of our fav artists - including Class Actress, Elk City and Katy Goodman - among others are contributing. Here is the track list with coinciding artist that are confirmed: Cinerama / [...]
Rather out of the blue, Portland-based dream-pop/shoegaze band Trespassers William just released a collection of rarities, consisting of unreleased covers, remixes, and alternate takes, on Bandcamp. It's one for the loyal fans, but not to be missed is their much-coveted (well, for me) cover of The Innocence Mission's "Tomorrow On The Runway". It was recorded [...]

I'm on a bus to Boston right now. The lights are off and I"m sitting at the black, so the only sources of lights are some fast moving cars, my laptop screen, and the green Peter Pan sign at the front of the bus. It is certainly an strange environment - while a car is intimate, the bus is pretty much empty and feels like a wide open space, a cavernous viewing area with the world passing by in front of me. My eyes don't want to adapt to this looming darkness, and I can't really tell what is going [...]

above pic from Flickr - Visit the photog Today's "playlist" is actually two songs from my very early commute this morning. Two songs, that whenever I hear them I always think specifically, "Damn, this song is good". They are the songs you think about after they finish, the songs you usually push the back button on when you get to one second left so that the song plays all over again. They both have been on Slowcoustic already, but they deserve to be on many times and I trust you feel the same. [...]

I have twitter to thank for this band discovery - they followed me, I followed them... you know how it goes. Trespassers William are Seattle based Matt Brown and Anna-Lynne Williams and they play this shoegazey stuff that reminds me a lot of Lanterns On The Lake . I'm not making a direct sound comparison here necessarily, but both bands have the same dreamy kinda quality, and also feature some seriously beautiful female vocals. And this song, 'Lie In The Sound'... it's gorgeous. Lie In The Sound - [...]

Sing Me To Sleep is a compilation of bedtime friendly covers by alternative artists - for an extremely good cause. The twenty-one tracks on this collection were all performed to benefit The Valerie Fund – a non-profit organisation that supports children with cancer and blood disorders. So not only will the lullabies included here help you nod off quicker, you'll also sleep better knowing that by making a purchase you'll have made a massive difference to a child's life. Not only does it support an extremely worthwhile organisation, it's also an extremely impressive record. Sometimes these things [...]

D.L. Anderson A lot of bands these days lay claim to the adjective of "orchestral" - and indeed, the tasteful addition of some strings, brass and/or woodwinds to one's aural palette can set one apart from the pack. Those following this path should know, however, that the bar for these sorts of stylings has been raised by North Carolina's Lost In The Trees . By a lot. Even if stripped down to just main composer Ari Picker, Lost In The Trees would be a worthy of note - his songwriting is lyrically evocative [...]
