Filed under: News , UK Bristol has been crowned the UK's "most musical city" in a survey conducted by the Performing Right Society (P.R.S.). Research compiled from the society's database of 65,000 members showed the city has the most musicians per head of population. Cardiff, Wakefield, Glasgow and Cheltenham rounded off the top five while London failed to reach the top ten, coming in at 26th despite having the highest concentration of musicians in Britain. With an estimated population in the region of [...]

Phantogram is one of the newer, more successful bands to carry the torch of the Bristol-based trip-hop sound, which is seeing new life under the guise of 'shoegazer' and 'dream pop.' Their debut album, 'Eyelid Movies,' was indeed mastered in the British trip-hop mecca, but Phantogram actually hail from Saratoga Springs, NY and consist of Sarah Barthel (keyboardist/singer by night, English teacher by day) and Joshua Carter (artist and all-around fuzz guitar master). Saratoga Springs is a bit of a sleepy hollow town, which makes sense considering the band's ghostly, mellow poetry. [...]

We used to think most reimagining albums were awful; do you blame us with only a million Kidz Bop albums to go off of? But after Peter Gabriel's Scratch My Back and the news of a Ray Davies album featuring Bruce Springsteen , you can call us believers. Now, add another album to the list as INXS have tapped the likes of Brandon Flowers, Ben Harper, Rob Thomas, Tricky, Nikka Costa, and more to rework some of their classics. In an interview with Rolling [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK Massive Attack dedicated their 1991 hit 'Unfinished Sympathy' to fashion designer Alexander McQueen at their London concert on Thursday night (Feb. 11). The band's joint frontman Robert Del Naja (aka 3D) made a short message - "We'd like to dedicate this song to Alexander McQueen" -- at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo show before Deborah Miller launched into the song. McQueen, one of the UK's most iconic fashion designers, was found dead in his home on [...]

Glade Festival has today announced its initial headliners for 2010, with Orbital, Simian Mobile Disco and Tricky being the first three acts confirmed to play the weekend bash.

Yet another Wild Weekend , which we´ll celebrate in the usual way: with a sixpack mix of songs chosen by my iPod´s nifty shuffle function. Get down. And off we go with Curtis Mayfield, and a funky junkie lament from his famous soundtrack to the blaxploitation flick Superfly . "I´ve got a jones, runnin' through ma' bones, I'm sorry son, all your money's gone..." Which is followed by a perfect ode to boredom by obscure Detroit protopunks Destroy All Monsters. Yup, that´s Ron Asheton of Stooges fame on guitar folks. [...]

Three different artists this time - Tricky, Placebo and Crazy Penis - and three different remixers - A Guy Called Gerald, Justin Robertson and Tom Middleton. Tricky has featured here before so nothing to add, and Placebo irritate despite Justin's efforts. This leaves Crazy Penis (now called Crazy P), who are Christopher Todd and James Baron. From their own bio: Crazy P started life as Crazy Penis, the brainchild of Chris Todd & Jim Baron, 10 years ago when they were both studying at Nottingham University. Although both musically gifted, Toddy on guitar and Jim [...]

Massive Attack is ready to take 2010 by charge. Are you prepared?

Brand new mix for the New Year from Mr. A/V featuring some of his "favorite record gems that I rarely get to play out but sit in my record bag." As you'd expect, musical goodness abounds on this mix. The record of the month is easily the Credit To The Edit Vol. 2 EP on Tirk Records. Three neat mid-tempo classics covering three decades in dance music are presented here slightly re-freshed and re-EQ'd for your listening pleasure. Manchester DJ legend Greg Wilson doesn't go mad with the scissors here as he only subtly extends and re-arranges three records that regularly feature in his sets. My favourite is Roxy Music's timeless ' Love Is The Drug' . The EP also features 80's jazz funk classic ' Starlight ' by Escort and the rave [...]

More of Tricky's dark, dark, hip hop, trip hop. Tricky was born in Knowle West, Bristol, England. His father left the family before he was born and his mother, Maxine Quaye, committed suicide when he was only four. He named his solo album after her - Maxinquaye - and once said that though he hardly knew her, he feels like she's speaking through him with his words. He spent his youth in the care of his grandmother, who often let him watch old horror movies instead of going to school. At 15 he began [...]

Adrian Thaws, sometime Massive Attack collaborator and producer of dark, paranoid trip hop. Wiki : Tricky (born Adrian Nicholas M. Thaws on 27 January 1968) is an English musician and actor. As a producer and a musician, he is noted for a dark, rich and layered sound and a whispering sprechgesang lyrical style. Culturally, Tricky encourages an intertwining of societies, particularly in his musical fusion of rock and hip hop, high art and pop culture. His debut album Maxinquaye was nominated for the Mercury Prize and voted Album of the Year by NME Magazine. [...]

Starving Souls was Tricky (real name Adrian Thaws) on his own Durban Poison label in 1995. It was the only release under the Starving Souls name. Despite the bleak lyrics, it's a really good track. And an odd cover version on the B side. I can't relax I need to meditate Yeah I'll make them wait Time moves in numbers [...]

Historical Context Some things happened through the first eight months of the year. On 11 September, 2001, terror hit the world when Slayer released their ninth studio album, God Hates Us All . George Bush responds by declaring war on Afghanistan. This likely made Slayer guitarist Kerry King sad. Also, it appeared to be a somewhat weak musical year, in my estimation. 10. Ash – Free All Angels There's nothing complicated about this music. It's [...]
