... Suite
Reg Presley, lead singer of the British '60s hitmakers the Troggs, has announced a retirement from music due to his being diagnosed with cancer. In a statement issued on the Troggs' official website , Reg said "As you all know I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad." He has previously suffered two strokes; one in 2010 and another just last year. via britrockaholic.tumblr.com

Listen to over a dozen of R.E.M.'s best covers, of songs by the Velvet Underground, John Lennon, the Troggs, Editors, and many more!
15 plus minutes of The Troggs live in 1969 with great quality video.
Mikal Cronin's been a big hit over here of late, from his colossally heavy David Bowie covers with Ty Segall to the blistering tracks from his self-titled psych-rock debut . Over on Cronin's Bandcamp, you can now download his "Gone" 7" released back in January of 2010 via Goodbye Boozy Records. That 7" features an excellent lo-fi and toothache sweet cover of The Troggs' 1967 single "Give It To Me" as its B-Side. Check out the cover and original below, then head to Cronin's Bandcamp for more jams from this up-and-coming talent. [...]
We look at a cross-section of covers from R.E.M.'s career, focusing on songs and bands that don't necessarily come to mind when you think of these college rock masters.

With Wild Thing being up there in the great canon of other great 60s cover fodder sing alongs like Louie Louie and Wooly Bully , it's easy to forget The Troggs also had some other, great, less visceral singles in them as well. So today we're tackling their touching, minor 1966 UK hit, Anyway That You Want Me . If you're like me (and gee isn't that like everybody?) you probably heard this song first via prodigal spacerock act Spiritualized . Indeed it was their [...]

Alex Chilton died a year ago today. Among his many attributes (singer, songwriter, band leader, and troublemaker) he was an interpreter and connoisseur of songs - all kinds of songs. I'd like to think that Alex had a big record collection but he probably did not. It would have only weighed him down. He was more likely a kind of musical sponge absorbing everything and spewing it out artfully in his own way. Today, in remembrance of Alex we'll listen to a few of those songs performed by the original artists that he brought to [...]

Entrance Band "I Want You" (out April 16 on Black Tent Press) The Entrance Band has done a mighty cover of The Troggs' "I Want You," which will be released on April 16th as a vinyl single for Record Store Day through Black Tent Press . The B-side is a cover of Love's "A House Is Not a Motel." Until then, Los Angeles has a chance to hear the trio do these tunes live during Entrance's March residency, Thursdays at the Satellite in Silverlake. It ain't free. Before getting [...]

- Love is all around

Guess what's happening this weekend? It's my favorite holiday... MY BIRTHDAY. The one day of the year I'm allowed to be extra annoying and make people do what I want them to do. Well, this year, one of the things I really want to make you do is listen to a mix of only songs that I really like. It includes my favorite band of all time (The Beatles, duh) and a song from each band that's playing at my birthday party and other songs that are just generally awesome. [...]

Here are five more lesser-known originals, covered in four entries: Wild Thing, Sunny, Angel Of The Morning, Under The Influence Of Love and It May Be Winter Outside. "You know how when you're listening to music playing from another room? And you're singing along because it's a tune that you really love? When a door closes or a train passes so you can't hear the music anymore, but you sing along anyway... then, no matter how much time passes, when you hear the music again you're still in exact same time with it. That's what it's like." - On love, Music from Another Room First in all of my Weeklies [...]

If you even remember what the "There and Back Again" section on this blog is supposed to be about, I have to admit that I'm cheating with this one. The loose conception of "There and Back Again" was a feature on this blog where I choose a classic album that I've never listened to before, listen to it a few times, and then write down reflections about the experience. There were a few reasons behind this- first, to remind people that just because you haven't heard of one band or another doesn't mean that you don't get to talk about [...]
