Dublin artist Trophy Boyfriend has remixed Jedward in the past - and drops it during live shows, which must confuse the hipsters - but don't let that put you off him. Known to his friends as Gregor Ruigrok, he now offers his take on The Cast Of Cheers' 'Family'. We've [Read more]

Read part one of this interview here. The Irish music scene is buzzing. It has been garnering so many plaudits from so many people in recent years, a long thing coming. You only need to look at the success of Breaking Tunes to see the plethora of bands coming through. [Read more]

Before this morning, I had heard Jedward's Irish Eurovision entry one time. Why I would need to hear it again was not up for discussion. I've now heard it twice thanks to actually-deadly Trophy Boyfriend's chillwavey re-interpretation of 'Lipstick'. I had to check it was the same tune. Gregor Ruigrok says he liked the song so he decided to remix it as a joke. As it turns out this remix makes Jedward sound like some Scandanavian pop stars remixed by some blog buzzing producer. It reminds me of The Sound Of Arrows [...]
Stream and download Trophy Boyfriend's splendid remix of Ireland's Eurovision 2011 entry. Da da dum.
Despite what moany Gavin Friday thinks , Irish music is plenty diverse. We are, however, under-represented in synth-led electro pop, which has seen a resurgence of late. Just spend ten minutes on The Hype Machine or Shuffler and you're bound to hear an example of this nostalgia-led music, made for carefree dancing under a glitterball. Yet the Irish are slow to dabble. Are we too self-conscious? Too small town? Am I talking shit? You could probably count decent Irish "electro pop" acts on less that ten fingers: Neosupervital , [...]

Hard Working Class Heroes kicks off on Thursday 7th October until Saturday 9th October and features over 100 Irish bands performing in 6 venues as well as mid-day gigs , a photography exhibition , speed-mentoring and panels . This year, Nialler9 will be going head to head against Jim Carroll On The Record with a 'versus' night in The Workman's Club on Saturday 9th of October. We've each picked three bands each and the lineup came out as: We Are Losers , Squarehead , Jennifer Evans & [...]
Trophy Boyfriend aka Gregor Ruigrok dropped his Distant Chimes EP earlier this month, and having just picked it up, I have to say the music is as nice and optimistic as the album cover. From the predominantly rainy Ireland, TB makes nostalgic dance, Washed Out influenced chillwave with booming percussion, 80s soft synths and lo-fi production. He's stuck in some lovely Pacific-esque vocal layering on the title track, and some wonderfully fashionable lo-fi guitars feature heavily at the start of "Like You Were Frozen Just As You Were About To Speak". That is, [...]

I first featured Gregor Ruigrok aka Trophy Boyfriend back in October's MAP but since then he hasn't been working hard on his craft to the point where his music has gone into a more electro, dare I say it, chillwave-esque vein. Taken from the Bandcamp-enabled free download EP Distant Chimes , the title track has a hazy electro with big synths and thumping drums. The EP was produced by M!SK (of Splitloop). So is this Ireland's first chillwave tune? Carles to comments please! [...]

I really like Trophy Boyfriend , much like Penguin Prison , he's one of my favourite 'electronic' artists that have emerged in the last six months, and seems like a nice guy too. I've already blogged a couple of times about his previous releases, Winston's Rat and Black Ship , and now he's back with new EP 'Distant Chimes' which is available for free through his website . I've not put the track to download here, take a look over at his website and get the entire EP [...]

I blogged about Trophy Boyfriend a while back, and was ecstatic when the email with new track "Winston's Rat's" dropped into our mail. It's an absolutely tremendous track; a subtle, wonderful electro pop tune, full of heart, which cements my belief that Trophy Boyfriend is a talent to watch in 2010. Trophy Boyfriend - Winston's Rats If you liked 'Black Ship' and [...]

Trophy Boyfriend - Winston's Rats Gregor Ruigrok är den ensamme mannen bakom irländska Trophy Boyfriend som här bjuder på ett intressant stycke elektronisk pop.

Once more, here is October's edition of the Music Alliance Pact . For those of you who don't know about MAP, it's a collection of music blogs from around the world who band together once a month to shed light on up-and-comers from their home countries. It's sort of like the WTO without the human rights violations. This month we've welcomed one new country: Estonia !. This edition showcases 34 tracks from bands around the world and marks the one-year anniversary since IGIF's inaugural edition of MAP debuted [...]

For the second time in two days, I'm writing about someone who's got a link to 'Suicide' . Hmm, it seems I have missed out a pioneering electronica group from my listening, and need to go catch up (thanks Spotify !) So, this is Trophy Boyfriend who is Gregor Ruigrok, or alternatively (from his MySpace), "Gregor, his guitar, a Vox AC30, a PC, several pedals in various states of disrepair and a fistful of soft-synths." I'd love to explain what it sounds like, but there's no [...]

Sweetest Day didn't go well for me. On one hand, I woke up entirely hung over from Friday's Dr. Dog show at Beachland. We had a little Citizen Dick reunion of sorts, with Rob, Brian, and Justin all converging at my place after the amazing set the medicinally astute canine put on for us. Plenty of brews were enjoyed, and after a slew of heated musical and professional debates, I went to bed knowing the morning wouldn't be too sweet. This was correct because my liver was smoking a cigarette next to me when I rolled out of bed. Lesson [...]
