Opening the evening and armed with only his six-string, Benjamin Francis Leftwich brought a sold out crowd to a stand-still at the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood on Friday night. The York based singer-songwriter and recent Vagrant signee held the captive audience for his brief 35 minute set. Fans sang along to Leftwich's inquisitive lyrics and distinctive voice. Husband and wife team Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, who on stage front the Denver-based Tennis, played at the sold-out Troubadour last night. Alaina Moore's honeyed vocals delivered the band's trademark airy style with ease, shown most prominently in their singles from latest album, Young & Old . Although there were moments of carefree swaying Moore, the choreographed bits from the "My Better Self" music video were not featured in an otherwise solid performance. Hot 100 topper Kimbra played to a packed house at The Troubadour on Tuesday night (Apr. 17) for her first ticketed show in Los Angeles. The Melvins absolutely destroyed the Troubadour on Friday night. After nearly 30 years, their passion, relevance, skill and inventiveness are somehow still on the rise. It is really an incredible thing to witness. Bonus points to drummers Coady and Dale for playing a full set with tourmates Unsane (capped by a cover of Flipper's "Ha Ha Ha") and then killing it during the Melvins' set too. Stamina. It was sweaty times at The Troubadour for the highly-anticipated Hot Snakes' show. The reunited post-hardcore group got down to business and gave the diehards exactly what they craved, including two encores. Fellow Swami Records' bands Spider Fever and Mrs. Magician opened. Having caught the rising force that is Ty Segall at Outside Lands, FYF and opening for Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, I wasn't surprised this gig was sold out at The Troubadour. Although garage rocker Segall is known for his solo albums like the well-received Goodbye Bread, his shows wouldn't be complete without touring bandmates and longtime friends Mikal Cronin (bass), Emily Rose Epstein (drums) and Charlie Moonheart (guitar). The younger crowd was already amped for Cronin who opened with tunes from his self-titled album with Segall and Rose backing. What a breath of fresh air vocalist Emily Armstrong is! This girl has chops and range and isn't posing for anyone. The Melvins have scheduled another local Los Angeles show to take place in the Spring. This time the band will be headlining the Troubadour on Friday, April 13th. This is a good show choice if you're not going to be in Indio that weekend for a little festival known as Coachella. You can expect The Melvins to pull from a very extensive music catalog that spans 25 years and 18 albums.
