True Widow - "Skull Eyes" New for us, True Widow , a trio out of Texas have released late last year, " As High As the Highest Heavens and From the Center to the Circumference of the Earth " Watch/Stream "Skull Eyes" off their LP True Widow - Skull Eyes
It was an OK year. Nothing more, nothing less. Timber Timbre and their album "Creep On Creepin' On" was without a doubt, the album I've listened to and seen performed live the most all year. Taylor Kirk's dark, swampy sound speaks to me. As for the rest of my top 5, these albums will be listened by yours truly for years [...]

The biggest struggle when putting together this list is how to rank the albums. What exactly is the difference between a #1 and a #2 album? Without doubt, Viva Brother's "Darling Buds of May" was the song I listened to the most in 2011 and the album it comes from is pretty damn good. But is it my favorite album as a whole? The Damnwells have consistently put out great material and I'm sure I listened to No One Listens to the Band Anymore more, front to back, than any album on the list but did I do that because [...]

It's been a busy year for Dallas stonegaze three-piece True Widow, who have recently returned from a tour in Europe. With the release of two records this year, As High As the Highest Heavens an... Continue reading "True Widow Does Violitionist Session" >
I'm taking a 24-hour break from photo sharing because it's Sunday and I might be lynched by my readers if I don't offer a mix tape for download. I think there's only one (maybe two?) more days worth of photos to share, then I'll get back in the swing of regular updates about how "indie" [...]

Celebrating (roughly) four-and-one-half years of Sunday Mix Tapes. I'm back from India. I'm trying to pretend I'm not jet-lagged but after sleeping five hours on the plane I came home from the airport (at 7am) and slept until noon. Then I woke up and ran 20 miles (which sucked!). Then I went out drinking. I [...]

Now this is a protest song featuring all sorts of riot mayhem, police and anonymous action by the band Atari Teenage Riot . ATR wants you to lip sync to this tune and film yourself doing it with a black flag in the background. No not Rollin's and Ginn's Black Flag logo. A solid black one like the illustration above. A sure fire way of getting on a watch list so be sure to wear a mask with the mouth cut-out at least. Make sure to look angry and sinister! Atari Teenage [...]

True Widow reach for length in more than just album titles on their new EP. At 14+ minutes, the title track of their new EP I.N.O. is one of the most expansive statements in their catalog, but aside from indulging in a doomscraping jam of epic proportions, the band also brings a few of their most unencumbered and dare we say, accessible tracks to date. Aside from the shoegaze romp of Night Witches their previous album seemed to stick to the shadows and mists, but three tracks here elevate the band to a plateau of clarity [...]
One of our favorite releases this year is True Widows latest LP, As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth. Now these Texan stonegazers have a new EP with a much more succinct title, I.N.O. Check out one of the tracks from the album, this is Bathyscaphe. True Widow; Bathyscaphe

MP3: True Widow - Bathyscaphe Usually this would be a good fall post. True Widow make that perfect autumn drone you want to hear while sipping on pumpkin beers and wearing long sleeves, but it's almost 80 degrees outside. What kind of bullshit is that? I.N.O. is out now on Kemado .
Compared to last week anything would be considered a small release week, but this week's slate still has almost ten new records. Highlights include music from Danava and Absu, so you'll have a few new things to check out if you somehow already made it through everything from last week. Enjoy. Absu – Abzu (Candlelight) [...]
See, the problem with working Sundays for the past three years is that I'm not too familiar with what's going on in the National Football League. So when someone offers me the chance to make a couple high-dollar bets with no vig I should know better than to take the offer. Inevitably my three years [...]

Live This Month: September 2011 (Podcast #256) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Two big local-focused events top this month's calendar. First, we're pleased to be co-producing the free, all ages 2011 Rock Make Street Festival , taking place on September 17th at Treat Avenue and 18th Street in the Mission District. Additionally, the Mission Creek Music Festival returns to SF and Oakland for its [...]
Earlier this year, Texas "stonegaze" band True Widow released the terrific, brooding album, As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth . I'm not normally someone who digs heavy music (and I'm not even well-versed enough in the category to feel confident labeling the band as such), but As High As The Highest Heavens... packs plenty of melody, making the band reminiscent of a fuzzier, stonier Low. If that sounds good to you, check out True Widow at the Rickshaw Stop [...]
There's some terrific shows in town tonight and depending on your musical mood there's just about something for everyone. - Indie rockers True Widow performs with Restorations at Kung Fu Necktie at 7:00 p.m.; tickets to the 21+ show are $8. - Former Replacements' guitarist Tommy Stinson, who's been playing Gun & Roses performs at The Note in West Chester with openers American Babies and Dave Hause (of The Loved Ones) at 8 p.m. Tickets to the 21+ show are $10. - The Michigan based indie-pop band Tally Hall performs at Johnny Brenda's with April Smith [...]

Woods FRIDAY, AUGUST 12 For a band that exists within the indie spectrum, Woods has no compunctions about wandering deep into jam-band territory. The Brooklyn-based quartet's lo-fi, psych/folk-pop is punctuated by extended solos; live, the band is more than willing to go beyond rehearsed material and venture into uncharted improvisations. As a result, seeing the band live is often a wholly different experience than listening to its recorded output. And [...]
