Caught with bird droppings on his socks, Sony Dong was charged on Tuesday in California with smuggling exotic Asian songbirds from Vietnam by strapping them onto his legs. In December of 2008 Dong was flagged for abandoning 18 birds in a suitcase in LAX, this time around the inspected the 46 year old but luckily it didn't take a thorough enema to find what Dong was packing. Apparently these birds are worth about $400 each, but now they'll get to live the rest of their lives in the comfortable confinement of a zoo. Ironic, isn't it? [...]

It's been a while since a band's demos have received this much play in my rotation! DC's True Womanhood have a five track demo that has me at a loss for words. It's dark and enigmatic...and moving. Made up of Thomas Redmond (vocals, guitar), Melissa Beattie (bass, aux), and Noam Elsner (percussion, aux) this three piece is drumming up excitement in the district with their spirited live show. They also seek out the odd instrument or two to manifest their recorded and live sound (hence the aux notes). The "Iron Volcano" (a metal funnel), "scythetar," tympani, a dulled, [...]

Tonight in Baltimore do not miss out on a great show at the Wind Up space featuring Kingman & Jonah (roots reggae founder Claudius Linton) with Thee Lexington Arrows. DC has some burners tonight as well. Aaron Estes (of Bellman Barker), Ryan Little (of Tereu Tereu), and Wakey! Wakey! play the Black Cat while Estelle and Ryan Leslie 9:30 Club . The real treat is at DC9 where Crystal Stilts, Women, and True Womanhood play. Enjoy! mp3: Crystal Stilts - Love Is A Wave mp3: True Womanhood [...]

Yeah, it is about that time for bands to migrate southward towards Austin and the music festival know as SXSW. Philly and Baltimore are very sparse, DC has a bit more. Guess we will see a surge in the coming weeks as bands come home or continue their tours. Still, some great shows to see this weekend. Here is what's happening: Bell X1 (via bands myspace) With their new album Blue Lights on the Runway just released [...]

As you already know, starting tonight, D.C. is going to be open for business for 24 hours a day straight through to Wednesday. Many bars are serving booze until 4am, and if you don't want to go home, you won't ever have to. Having said that, navigating the city is probably going to border on nightmarish, since the [...]

All photos: Jane Briggs Live performances are one of the most lucid windows into someone's heart and soul. Tons of choreography, pretension and rehearsed spontaneity suggest an egomaniacal fiend. A stripped down acoustic set suggests the performer is intimately associated with his/her craft, material and audience. In the case of True Womanhood, I see their youthful naivete on display on multiple fronts. The borderline giddy exuberance with which bassist Melissa Beattie visibly anticipates each song in the set is probably the most endearing and genuine. Their overwrought theatrics of [...]
When we started planning for recording these live sessions, probably the first band that came to mind was True Womanhood. Having had a chance to see them live a few times before, there was no doubt they were bringing a fresh perspective to the table. It was exactly the sort of vibe that we wanted [...]
True Womanhood is the distillation of the type of band I set this blog up to talk about. Fresh, vibrant, as yet unreleased but buoyed by the sort of promise that should see them one day make an impressive break through. Based out of Washington D.C. they have already made inroads on the local circuit. Their demos boast a pleasing variety of styles with Sonic Youth's influence filtering through on
