Words: Saam Das All good things must come to an end. And lo, Tubelord have called it a day. The band leave the world with two albums, an EP, and a final gig on New Year's Eve at The Old Blue Last in London. They've also kindly gone out with a final song, the appropriately named 'This Is It'. Listen below, along with some past Tubelord classics. I guess it was early [...]

>> Based on his remarks in our interview with his band a year ago about logging copious hours jacked into his beloved Japanese 8-track machine and Fruity Loops, it's little surprise that Johnny Foreigner drummer Junior Elvis Washington Laidley has finally revealed a bedroom project, the beats-and-electronics concern Fridge Poetry . The name itself is apt, as Mr. Laidley -- in the spirit of Dntel and The 6ths -- produces the music and then invites vocalists in to complete the tracks. Fridge Poetry 's debut tune, a demo titled "Crash [...]

>> Although Clicky HQ typically focuses on matters guitar and pop -- whatever that means these days -- we also enjoy the kaleidoscopic world of electronic music, and we're endeavoring to re-engage with it editorially after some time away. We've warmly received the new full-length from Augsburg, Germany-based ambient electronic artist Markus Mehr . Out July 17th on Hidden Shoal Recordings, On is Mr. Mehr's third record working under his own name; it is filled with immaculately constructed instrumentals, appointed with imaginative instrumentation and illuminating samples, that are as soothing as they are transporting. While much non-"pop" [...]

Tubelord have to be one of my top -5 all time bands. Their eccentric blend of prog-rock and math-pop layered with carefully crafted lyrics and separated by fuzz-fed hardcore breakdowns makes them one of the most creative, experimental yet catchy bands around at the moment. Ok, I’m gushing. Sorry. Anyhow, much of this is down to the creative talent of Joe Prendergast, lead-whiner extraordinaire and guitar player. During a little lull in Tubelord’s touring and recording schedule he’s created himself a new alias and a brash blend of electro and lo-fi rock, pretty similar to [...]

Our good friend Lemmy Ashton sends us a remarkable oceanic stirrer which is idea for the Winter Music Conference looming very, very soon or any other Balearic capacity via Cafe Mambo, Ibiza. Alongside our delight you will see the alternative Original mix from British band Beaty Heart that inspired Lemmy into crafting a traditional Ashton-House music production. Included on Aerialnoise’s “Let Your Hair Loose 2 Lemmy's RMX Boost,” are the melodic blessings from ‘My First Castle’ which gets a screaming twenty out twenty for the pure living-the-moment joy (a'la the Nineties), ‘Spark,’ which does exactly what [...]

As the first of Tubelord’s support acts arrive on-stage the crowd begin to swell to listen to DTSP’s Math-Rock, their songs abridged by 1950’s movie sound clips. The quick tempo changes and erratic guitar lines may be typical of the Math-Rock genre but their songs are executed with such vigour and musicianship they stand out from the crowd. Equally Reno Dakota’s rhythms are strong and grooving as are their songs. The crashing-to-a-halt instrumentation yet classic song writing they also make the style their own; they are a pleasing warm-up for the headliners. Finally supporting Tubelord tonight [...]

We've a double treat in store for DIY readers, and Tubelord fans, today: not only have the band talked us through their forthcoming new album 'R O M A N C E', track by track, but they've also given us a stream of the entire thing, so you can have a listen to it a week pre-release (it's due out 10th October). So, without further ado, here they are: In the first few lines of ‘Over In Brooklyn’, the listener can hear the line "tear apart the writer" being sung, which could be [...]

Our bestest best friend out of all of our best friends, young Lemmy Ashton has done it again folks. He supplies us with mix after mix of disco loveliness as well as a few bloody good remixes every now and then. Today we're writing about the latter. Some long time fans may remember the straight to cassette remix of Tubelords 'Stacey's Left Arm' that was floating around a year or two ago. Mr Ashton has worked his magic once again on the bands latest single 'My First Castle'. [...]
Tubelord has released a new video for the song 'My First Castle'. The best way to describe this song? Alternative karaoke video. (I think anyway.) The song will appear on the band's second album, 'r o m a n c e', on the 10th of October on Pink Mist. Luke wrote a nice Bands to Watch piece on the band last summer that you can read here. Click here to view the embedded video.
Okay, there is way too much going on in this video. I guess that's a pretty decent tactic to use if you need to get someone to watch your video enough times that you end up liking the song, but Tubelord did not really need to do for "My First Castle". There's all these picture in picture things going on, plus I kept trying to follow along with whatever was scrolling across the bottom. TOO MUCH! Anyway, "My First Castle" is from Tubelord's upcoming sophomore album, R O M A N C [...]

>> Still-not-dead-yet label Audio Antihero will release this fall a second full-length from ethereal and brilliant folk misfit Benjamin Shaw (third if you count the amazing, more experimental and FREE Rumfucker release, which we're never sure if we're supposed to count or not). The collection is titled There's Always Hope, There's Always Cabernet and it will be available from Nov. 21. To remind you that Mr. Shaw is out there, biding his time in a forest north of London, Audio Antihero is issuing ahead of There's Always Hope... [...]

Ahh the Devonshire countryside; pretty little villages, Cream teas, Dartmoor ponies. Having grown up there I can confirm that it's a wonderful area of the country to spend a holiday or retire (but not a lot else). Bovey Tracey is the epitome of a Devonshire town. Situated on the edge of Dartmoor and only a short drive to the English Riviera, it's a quaint and laid-back old market town. Not the first place you would expect to find everyones favourite Math-Pop'ers Tubelord then. However, it's here that the four-piece are currently shacked up, hard at work on [...]

Fresh from their latest tour which led them to play 40 dates in 9 European countries in February and March, and after touring alongside And So I Watch You From Afar and Oceansize, Tubelord will now record the follow up to debut 'Our First American Friends' (Hassle/Vagrant) and the subsequent EP 'Tezcatlipoca' . The band, despite being critically acclaimed and having a wide fan base, has launched the “Help a Brother Out” campaign, in order to get funds to record this second album. Fans and music lovers can [...]

Over the past couple of weeks I've found myself, once again, completely addicted to the recent Japandroids single series. What makes each release so great, aside from the heart shattering brilliance of the A-Sides, is the care and attention that has gone into producing the 'whole package'. It made me realise how great singles can still be and also goes some way to explaining why, when sales of every other music format is declining, sales of 73 singles are higher than they've been for years. That's a whole other article for another day though. What my [...]
