Pop Quiz : How many doctors do you need to see to find out if you have a broken ankle? Answer : More than 3. How many more? I'm not sure. But the point is that... if it take more than three (including one fucker who's whole job it is to be an expert in reading x-rays), then my faith in their black market of tacos healthcare is as solid as for the debt-ucation system. After all that, I need something rooty to chew on for mental pain relief. And there's nothing [...]

Summer sunshine calls for a good hip-hop soundtrack. While it's not quite summer yet (especially here in Chicago), we're in anticipatory mode, on the hunt for the songs that will fuel the warmer nights ahead. My pal Ben has made the broad claim that there's no good hip-hop on the radar for Summer '10, save for Big Boi. But as I like to say, if you're only going to look in the expected places, then you'll never find anything unexpected. So Ben, this post is for you. I heard a cut from South African hip-hop four-piece Tumi [...]

Up here in Canadia today everyone's talking about how Toronto-based Fucked Up won the 2009 Polaris Prize (a $20,000 prize that's pretty much my country's equivalent to the UK's Mercury Prize . It's funny, to me, because most papers that want to announce that Fucked Up won the Polaris can't actually print the band's name. But what's funnier (albeit not in a knee-slapping, pants-shitting, beer-coming-out-your-nostrils way) to me is that Mos Def shouted out Fucked Up in his New York Times playlist/article and even he couldn't write the band's name. A rapper that can't swear [...]
In a rare Toronto appearance, South African hip hopper (hopster?) Tumi will be performing for free on Friday evening at Yonge Dundas Square. The show gets underway at 8:45pm. As you know, I'm not really a hip hop dude, but a couple of reliable sources tell me Tumi is very good. So you may want to check it out.
