Oh man, this is too good to actually exist in real life. tUnE-yArDs, the Roots' drummer ?uestlove, Angélique Kidjo and Akua Naru teamed up to cover Fela Kuti's "Lady" for a Red Hot Organization fundraiser. Merrill Garbus's unhinged yawp turns out to be just about ideal for Afrobeat. The Red Hot Organization and the (RED) initiative are currently teaming up to release (RED) Hot + Fela , a new fundraising Fela Kuti tribute compilation. And on the comp's version of "Lady," tUnE-yArDs teams up with Roots drummer/bandleader ?uestlove, Beninoise singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo, and Ghanaian-American rapper Akua Naru. And other than the pretty-unnecessary Naru verse, it does a nice job paying homage to Fela's frantic, drawn-out rhythmic intensity. Listen below. Read More...

Washington's Sasquatch! Festival took place over the weekend, a heavy-hitting four day lineup featuring people like Jack White, St. Vincent. Bon Iver, Beck, Sanitgold, the Shins, Feist, Metric and dozens more. Stereogum contributor Alex Crick was on hand to behold and snap some great shots. Check out his gallery up top.

photo by Brittney Bollay Opening a main stage at a festival can be a daunting task, especially for a band that isn't used to playing festivals. " This is a little different than our basement," noted singer Galen Disston, "but we're really honored to be here." Lucky for Pickwick , a legion of fans rushed to the front of the stage, and with their support, Pickwick tore through a set of groove-based rock that started the day off with a bang. Their energy was high and their musicianship was tight, so by the time they [...]

Liz Flyntz If we can regard Beach House literally as their namesake, which is to say as a holiday getaway, a reliably stolid place to escape from the real world, then the amount of adoration they've gotten for largely sticking to their skeletal formula through four albums now is understandable. Their fans don't want them to reinvent themselves with each outing; they want that comforting blanket of Victoria Legrand's narcoleptic vocals and whirring keyboard interwoven with Alex Scally's languid slide guitar, and across their first two records - their 2006 self-titled debut and [...]

The Red Hot Organization ( @RedHotMusic ) is prepping another compilation album to benefit the international HIV and AIDS awareness charity. Since 1990 the organization has tapped popular musicians to contribute tracks to differently themed releases. These albums often pair artists of varying backgrounds to perform collaborative tracks and the non-profit has tweeted some insight into one such combination. Fort Funston, San Francisco, 2011. This past Monday, my better half and I got the pleasure of seeing tUnE-yArDs with full band as well as local guitar wizard Ava Mendoza play along with the following Buster Keaton shorts: One Week (1920), The Haunted House (1921) and with Fatty Arbuckle Good Night, Nurse! (1918) and The Cook (1918). It was at the legendary Castro Theater for the 55th San Francisco International Film Festival Her music lent itself perfectly to the [...]

Frank Yang Maybe listening to Jesus Of Cool and Labour Of Lust weren't the best warm-ups for Nick Lowe's show at The Phoenix on Monday night. After all, he was many many years removed from being the young pub-rock firebrand who recorded those first two records, having settled comfortably into the role of professorial pop singer-songwriter - a guise that's suited his still-potent pen quite nicely, as last year's The Old Magic proved. But if you [...]
Filed under: News Jason Persse for AOL Day two, week two, of the flame-broiled Coachella festival brought the highest temperatures yet, but this time the crowds were ready. Shirts? Who needs 'em? From the neo-tribal drum-circle vibe during tUnE-yArDs ' set to the frothing mosh pit that opened up for English punk godfathers Buzzcocks , there was something a little ... primal in the air. After whipping the kids into a frenzy [...]

Annie Beedy I'd like to, if I could, refer you back to my writeup of The Shins on the occasion of their visit to Toronto last September . In it, I mused about how this band had a Forrest Gump-like knack for getting pulled into conversations bigger than themselves and how all of that seemed out of scale with James Mercer's desire to simply write pop songs. That hasn't necessarily subsided as some of the pieces I've read surrounding last month's release of Port Of Morrow were [...]
WHAT'S GOOD! Corban back in the pilot seat for Straight To Video this week, as Tom Breihan's at ActionFest , an event that sets the new record for "Most Tom Breihaniest Event Ever." Thanks to a late-night influx of vids from the Cash Money camp last weekend, there were lots of contenders for the list this week. Some notables that got chopped include 2 Chainz The Warriors -shading " Riot " and a Cloud Nothings video that reminded me of one of my favorite Simpsons episodes, so, that's [...]

The brand-new video for tUnE-yArDs' w h o k i l l song "My Country" shows Merrill Garbus amidst a mob of little kids with tUnE-yArDsian facepaint, everyone dancing and screaming and making goofy faces. It's absolutely adorable and a lot of fun, and it actually reveals something about Garbus: Her whole thing makes a lot more sense, in some ways, if you imagine her as an overgrown child. Mimi Cave directs. Watch it below. Read More...

A dose of Merril Garbus goodness. Following on from the kids from last year's 'Bizness' video, these children come from the Brightworks and San Francisco Rock Project , a nonprofit music school that offers musical education to kids through the experience of learning and performing rock music. Tune-Yards has set up a Kickstarter project to help them out for appearing in the uplifting video, which was directed by Mimi Cave . Tune-Yards play Vicar Street on July 15th.
