By Russell Warfield August 17th-19th, 2012 Green Man 2012 might have been the year when the festival completely transcended my abilities of articulation. At the very least, I’m not going to be able to say anything desperately fresh about it, so let’s start at the most tiredly clichéd, lowest common denominator: we arrived in deluges of rain. Nestled into the crevice of the everlastingly gorgeous Black Mountain range, there have been years when I’ve actually, after grimacing at the swelling Usk on the periphery of the campsite, feared for Green Man’s [...]

New York I've been in constant motion, like a shark! I'm wrapping up my first LP, and getting ready for some summer SAADI shows (see poster below). Also singing and touring with Janka Nabay and the BuBu Gang. I just quit my job as a photo retoucher so I can devote myself entirely to music. Until my new record comes out, you can get my Snowyman remixes including amazing ones by Prince [...]

Time for a little bit of aural time travel. Let's look back, reflect, and contemplate... what were we listening to one year ago ? Listen to the August 2011 Mix and find out. You can stream (and scrobble ) all the songs in this mix using the ex.fm player at the bottom of the page OR you can just download any or all of the tracks at your leisure and play them using a digital media player of your choice. With more than 100 bands on eight stages (well, seven if you discount the Kidz stage, which often features songs about barnyard animals), Lollapalooza is expected to be exhausting and overwhelming. The point is to see as many bands as possible, because you paid for a ticket and dammit you're going to make that 3-day wristband worth it. At least, that was my Year 1 strategy. Year 2 was a little more laid back; I even took a night off, missing a few bands I would have liked to see in the name of sleep and sunburn recovery. [...]

The Newport Folk Festival is a music festival built for music lovers. Steeped in history, it could almost get by on name alone. Almost. It tried that and failed somewhat when it found itself in debt and struggling to survive just a handful of years ago. But in the past few years it has been reinvigorated to the point that it is practically bursting open at the seams. The revival has coincided with and/or helped nurture a renaissance in young folk music around the country, and even across the globe, which has only helped to increase the buzz. It's a [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Spinner Says Samuel Dietz, WireImage It's time for the 2012 edition of Lollapalooza and the schedule, as always, is a pain in the ass. As of now, there are about 30 bands I'd to see, but I can't be in two places at once, I haven't factored in any time for food, I'll need to reapply my SPF 110 at least once or twice out there, and I'm sure I'll [...]

Photography by Nicole Holoboff The Tallest Man on Earth put on an incredible performance that will be very difficult to put into words, at Newport Folk Festival on Sunday. Being about the third to last artist of the festival, his set ran into Jackson Browne 's headlining performance; Kristian Matsson performed on perhaps one of the smallest stages and brought a crowd far too large for the small stage to handle. As Tune-Yards was finishing her set (where Kristian could be spotted watching secretly on the sidelines) [...]
The Newport Folk Festival has weathered many a storm in its 53 year history. It disappeared in the '70s, nearly went bankrupt in the aughts, and faced a complete dry up of sponsorships. But last year, Newport jewelers Alex and Ani stepped in to became a major backer, the festival returned to non-profit status, and a Board of Advisors (Colin Meloy, Gillian Welch, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Jim James, and Ben Knox Miller) was established. Now, the festival has never been stronger, and even some damp evenings couldn’t keep the 2012 edition from being another in a nearly unbroken [...]

tUnE-yArDs ' versatile, experimental, undeniably catchy music has always done a good job reflecting a number of influences and themes. From Merril Garbus's vocal acrobatics to the soul-busting, percussive nature of her band, tUnE-yArDs' music has proven to be as impossible to pin down as it is enjoyable. You can get some sense of what moves Ms. Merrill thanks to a 28-minute mix she put together for Africa In Your Earbuds , featuring a number of "vintage finds from East Africa." As she explains, to Okay Africa: No doubt, I [...]

Dope or what? This video helped me figure out what effects pedal I'm going to get next - Loop Station, which is how Merrill gets her percussion kickin' the whole time. Love this band.
Naytronix, an evil dance band cloned from the stem cells of multi-instrumentalist/producer Nate Brenner, takes futuristic music to a whole new level. The member of tUnE- yArDs & Beep! infuses fashionable grooves with found sounds and homemade instruments, as humans play side-by-side with robots, intertwining in a nefarious tango until ...

And now something special, Skeletons (whom you may know as Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys, Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities, or Skeleton$ ) have a new LP, The Bus , which was recorded with a 20+ piece big band/chamber orchestra comprised of members various NYC underground bands including: Little Women , Extra Life , PC Worship , Starring , Tune Yards , NOMO , and The Dreebs , among others (collectively known as Skeleton$ Big Band ). The LP was recorded when [...]

Nate Brenner is the bassist for experimental looping heroes tUnE-yArDs and Oakland jazz trio Beep! Now he's giving a solo project, Naytronix , a whirl. Self-coined as an evil dance band, Naytronix recorded 20 songs before skimming the final cut to 11 for his debut LP, Dirty Glow . Brenner said, "Over the last three years I've spent a lot of time in a van ... so I think I just wanted to make a record that would sound good from beginning to end while cruising down a highway and hold the listener's interest the whole [...]

By Jimmy Blake & Olly Douglas Part I of Jimmy and Olly's Nova Festival coverage can be found here . Saturday The weekend’s largest deluge awoke us on early on Saturday morning and after exhausting the excuses as to why we should stay in the tent all day we thought it best to explore the middle day of the festival. With the site being so small, we soon bumped into an array of campfire acquaintances [...]

Breakout Bay Area natives tUnE-yArDs have seen huge successes in the last year. Playing sold out festivals and to packed audiences at the Fox, their unique sound and music certainly draws a crowd. But their bass player, Nate Brenner (who also plays in Beep! and is known for his 'genre bending' style) recently peeled off on his own to debut a wild electro solo project Naytronix . Naytronix sounds a little like tUnE-yArDs dipped in The Police, James Blake, Charles Mingus, Stomp, and some electro band from the [...]
