Electronic he-producer the ELEPHANT & CASTLE has unleashed his new single, 'En Memoria' , featuring the TUNE-YARDS on vocals. Electronica composer Elephant & Castle , aka David Vincent Reep, is set to release his debut LP Transitions on March 13th via Plug Research. Serving as the first sense of what the album will sound like, the track "En Memoria," which features Merrill Garbus (of tUnE-yArDs fame), paints a fantastic picture of grandiose instrumentation and composition. Both Reep and Garbus play off of each other beautifully, resulting in a sweeping, ambience-heavy combination of orchestral instrumentation and unique vocal work. Give the song a listen below, and check out the tracklisting for Transitions after [...]
Elephant & Castle feat. tUnE-yArDs : En Memoria - MP3 ( Transitions , March 13 via Plug Research ) MP3

Elephant & Castle is the project of producer David Vincent Reep. Spending much of his early career focused on another area of music (starting a DIY label), Reep hopes to make his presence known in the electronic/ambient genres. Citing influences of Flying Lotus and DJ Shadow, Elephant & Castle's first single "En Memoria" not only hints at promise, but it also delivers with a cameo from Tune-Yards' Merrill Garbus. The track will be a part of Elephant & Castle's album Transitions out March 13th via Plug Research. Download "En Memoria" below. [...]

Merrill Garbus sings on this track from Elephant & Castle's debut LP, Transitions .

On March 13th, ambient/electronica composer David Vincent Reep, who creates under the pseudonym Elephant & Castle , will release his debut LP, Transitions , via Plug Research. For a starter course on Reep's free-form sonic creations, he's released the album track "En Memoria", featuring guest vocals from Merrill Garbus (aka tUnE-YarDs). Waves of slow, methodical noise lull the listener in, with Garbus' distinct vocal styling - at an all-time hazy - waiting patiently. Though Garbus' part is separated between jolting refrains of pitchy ambiance and assorted junk sounds, her contribution shines thanks to Reep's orchestration, and vice versa. Listen to the [...]

2011 was an exciting year for Andy Plank. He began his career in writing, the Packers won the Super Bowl , he rediscovered Comedy Bang Bang and he got big red glasses. He spent most of the 365 days between January 1 and December 31 listening to albums that came out early in the discographies of Weezer, Modest Mouse, Blink 182 and Jimmy Eat World. Every once in a while, however, he stopped being so bitter about all of his favorite bands that crumpled and faltered under the pressure of becoming popular and he listened to a few new [...]

Every year, venerated New York weekly newspaper The Village Voice tallies up votes from hundreds upon hundreds of music critics for its Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll and comes up with a pretty-much-definitive list of critical favorites for the year. It then packages that list with a bunch of sharp essays and write-in comments, and the only thing you can do is dive in. For music dorks - or, more specifically, for music-criticism dorks - the morning Pazz & Jop goes up online is something like a second Christmas. Well, Christmas 2 is here. I'd assumed [...]

I love it when N8 submits his year-end lists. They are unpretentious, span a vast repertoire of genres, and typically include several albums I have yet to hear. N82s 2011 list fits the mold: in fact, I have yet to listen to any of the ones that made the list this year. Now this is not by lack of want or know - I'm familiar with many of the albums, just haven't gotten around to them. Dig in and enjoy! Intro by Fense * * [...]

Songs are pretty amazing things. It's magical that such a small thing can be so powerful.
