Muralismo - “ Wild Eyed Friend ” [mp3] from Muralismo, out July 9 th ( bandcamp ) Taking their name from an artistic movement that focused on aspects of everyday life, this is fine chamber pop from San Francisco featuring the words and music of Mark David Ashworth. This tune is a lovely & exquisite composition, with nice mix of woodwinds and electric guitar. [...]

K-vicker? No, K-vaker! Today's release of Sigur Rós ' 2013 album, Kveikur , may seem like a speedy turn-around on the heels of their 2012 LP, Valtari , but the ground-shaking sound on the new LP is what the Icelandic band has been building toward over the past few years. While the relatively placid Valtari surfaced some earlier Sigur Rós compositions, Kveikur churns out a loud moody sound. As our Music Director, Don Yates, notes, this one "finds them dramatically shifting to a notably darker, more aggressive take on the band’s ambient post-rock [...]

The sun is out, your bedroom is already stinking hot, and suddenly the memory of snow seems less depressing than it does nostalgically inviting: yes, it's summer! The advent of the summer generally corresponds with something of a drop-off in the volume and quality of album releases — everyone's too busy drinking beer on rooftops, maybe — but never fear, because as ever Flavorwire has pored over the release schedules and come up with a list of the ten albums you need to hear in the month to come, along with a roundup of everything else that's out, whether good, [...]

It's great to be reminded of Tunng, the London-based folkies whose 2007 album Good Arrows wooed me several years ago. Their new track, "The Village", does much of the same. As a contagious effort from Tunng's upcoming album Turbines , due out June 17th (18th in the U.S.), "The Village" combines electro-acoustic stutters with marimba-like key bouncing, all over a tranquilly convergent male-female lead. Some superb sampling work is done around the 01:30 mark, and then again at 02:42, when warbled guitar stretches halt for just a moment as [...]

Heard that cacklin' fresh Tunng track yet? If So Far From Here is anything to go by, Turbines will be one more mesmerizing freakfolk masterpiece. Out in June. Tunng - So Far From Here

New Tunng ? Yes, please. You know I am affectionate toward the London crew, and their new song, "The Village," does little to alter that. The song is 4 minutes 33 seconds, and I've listened to it 5 times in the last 22 minutes and 45 seconds. Math! "The Village" is the new single off Tunng's forthcoming fifth album, Turbines , due June 17 via Full Time Hobby . Bonus:

”Set in an imaginary place,” Tunng frontman Mike Lindsay tells Rolling Stone , 'The Village' is an idea about a place where “you can't get away from the strange characters you encounter.” From the unique time signatures, uncharacteristic electronic inclusions, and out-of-nowhere vocals, Lindsay seems to be right. It's the first listen from the UK band's upcoming album Turbines , which is set for release next month. Along with 'The Village,' the band marked a few upcoming UK tour stops, starting with back-to-back shows at The Lexington in London, July [...]

Atoms for Peace - "Magic Beanz" single This sounds more like an idea than a complete track. Possibly an outtake from Amok ? Braids - "Amends" from In Kind/Amends out 10 June 2013 "Amends" is a bit more atmospheric than any of the releases from 20112s Native Speaker . It pairs [...]

Listen While You Work 1.0 started with me saying I was trying to keep my head above water at my job. I came out yesterday in a pretty personal post saying that I wasn't going to live that way anymore. That said, I still spend many hours at work, and it's always important to have good music to listen to at work. And so comes Episode 2 of Listen While You Work. For the most part, it's a little more upbeat this time; you gotta keep you head up while ya [...]

The establishing of an annual metropolitan festival in a city alien to his own during which our weatherbeaten curator intends to congregate practitioners of explicitly "disparate music and genres" may initially appear an immoderately audacious endeavour. Though so spake the inimitably intimidating, and indeed ever valiant Michael Gira ahead of the inaugural Mouth To Mouth – a showcase of sorts geared toward just the one lone goal, with that being the engendering of undiluted joy. It's surely the solitary sensation every show aims to provoke and though centred around artists "chosen based on their ability to resuscitate, set [...]

Norwegian singer songwriter Farao first appeared in January with a free download of haunting track ‘Forces’. Her fragile and otherworldly tone instantly resonated with anyone that heard it. Farao headed to Reykjavik in February to record with Mike Lindsay from experimental folk group Tunng. ‘Skin’ is the first track from this batch of recordings that is set for release as a digital-only single on May 27th. There is an un-nerving intensity to this track with a foreground drum beat and icy sharp vocals that tell the tale of extra marital affair. Farao played all instrumentation on [...]

As spring begins to cycle into summer, we look to our trend-streaming leaders for entertainment and thrills of any sort. We saw Tyler the Creator taking selfies with Letterman on their televised performance of "Rusty", Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires Of The City release date delays on account of "unanticipated delays" gave time for front bro Ezra Koenig to reflect and compare N-Dubz to The Beatles, while Rick Ross's "U.O.E.N.O"-rape-lyrics-gate scand...
