Christ, Lord Live at Criminal Records [Criminal Records, 2013] 4 out of 5 stars Purchase This Album: Amazon I wouldn't call Christ, Lord's music cinematic per se, but I'd argue that it's highly visual much in the same manner a well-written novel can lead an imaginative mind to sight. They're a band rich with details and musical allusions, and every song comes with an inherent sense of built-in storybook drama. Of [...]

Turf War Album: The Great Escape EP (Info) Label: Old Flame Records Turf War - The Great Escape Turf War - For The Last Time Tweet

One of the many acts that I think is severely overlooked is Turf War . Their first album Years of Living Dangerously still manages to make its way deep into my playlist, years later I might added. They've just announced they'll be releasing The Great Escape EP , and I'm stoked to see that things haven't changed much. When I hear them, I tend to think of straight rock sounds a la the Replacements, but I can also hear bits of blues and country [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Big Jesus w/ Manray, The Dirty Magazines Saturday, March 30 The Earl - 466 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $5 ADV / $7 DOS / Purchase Tickets When Big Jesus announced its return from an extended hiatus early this year, it was welcome news, but it also felt a little like a game of musical chairs. Here was former O'Brother guitarist Aaron Womack being brought in to play drums, while Spencer Ussery and C.J. Ridings [...]

Long holiday, the weekend has me zonked from tryptophan, complex carbohydrates, and maybe a litte holiday cheer. 'Tis the season and there are lots of great samplers that will be posted over the next few weeks. Tonight, we have two samplers from indie labels: Love Our Records and Old Flame Records. BEST OF Love Our Records SAMPLER Love Our Records (LOR) is out Great Britain, based in London. They are committed to supporting and nurturing new music, and are offering a 10 song [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: The Men w/ Liverhearts, Vincas, Wymyns Prysyn Tuesday, July 3 529 - 529 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $8 / Purchase Tickets I'm still not sold entirely on Open Your Heart , the latest effort from Brooklyn-based the Men . It lacks the visceral punch and scowling rage of its immediate predecessor, Leave Home , and there's something about its willingness to explore and expand that feels predetermined and forced. Still, the record has [...]

Just to be sure that the debut video from garage punk five-piece Turf War had all the rowdy, booze-fueled, party-time antics you could possibly want, I watched it a couple of times with the sound off, and, goddamn, is this thing gloriously, ridiculously, fantabulously awesome. Seriously, give it a shot; you won't be disappointed. Directed and edited by Jason Travis, this circus parade of beer shotgunning, toilet papering, street wandering, pizza facing, Mexican hat wearing and trumpet playing debauchery and absurdist buffoonery would be killer enough on its own, but as a visual backdrop for Turf War's rousing, [...]

You all know that the ATL has a really solid rock n' roll scene, and they've been sending out bands left and right to help take over the world. Turf War is another one of those acts, kicking out some really awesome hits. We caught up with John Robinson before the group head our way. ATH: What is the most challenging thing about being a band during SXSW or [...]

Earlier today the lineup for the second annual Governors Ball in New York City was announced. While last year's festival took place on Governors Island in New York City, this time around the festival has expanded to two days instead of one and will be held in Randall's Island Park. The lineup packs quite a wallop, including Beck, Passion Pit, Duck Sauce, Chromeo, Major Lazer, Santigold, Turf War, and more. For you fellow Beck fans out there, yes, this is his first time back into the city since 2008, so I am about to explode out of my seat in [...]

It's not Beethoven but, you know, it rocks. Turf War is a five-piece garage-punk outfit from Georgia whose roots owe a good deal more to bands like the Undertones and the Buzzcocks than to anything like Bad Religion or Fear. This is another way of saying that the melodies are hummable and the lyrics tend to be wistful and good-natured, rather than enraged. "Cheers to the Years" channels that wistfulness well, as does "A Little Harder This Time", which is probably the most...

We posted a couple of times last autumn about good time garage rockers Turf War and their rowdy debut album Years of Living Dangerously and now they will be heading out on tour (with fellow MM Faves The Boom Bang ) in support of the record. To mark the occasion they have made available this typically raucous cover of the Creedence classic, Bad Moon Rising . Download Turf War - Bad Moon Rising mp3 (Creedence Clearwater Revival Cover) And for our US friends, [...]

Turf War are new in my book, but their single "Cheers to the Years" made a quick believer out of me. Being from Atlanta myself, I'm a bit ashamed that it's taken me this long to discover these gents. Don't make the same mistake I did. Turf War's sonic recipe is pretty simple: you marinate a big hunk of garage rock in whiskey and swamp water over night; then you country-fry it in pork fat. Let it rest, so the juices settle, then proceed to take it dirt track racing all day until it's nice and tender. [...]
