Frankie Rose has come a long way since her lo-fi days in female indie-pop armies such as Vivian Girls and the Dum Dum Girls, and her time in Crystal Stilts. She's proved her pop-songwriting chops when she fronted her band the Outs a couple of years ago, but Rose has elevated her game further yet with this year's solo effort "Interstellar," which cannot be described any better than tingling planetarium pop. ||| Photos by Carl Pocket On the album, Rose's waves of dream-pop and shoegaze provide the perfect [...]

For their self-titled debut LP, Australia's Twerps embrace the musical antecedents of that region - Aussie bands like Go-Betweens and The Church, and the Kiwi Dunedin Sound championed by Flying Nun Records (based out of Christchurch, actually) and Xpressway - as well as the band's contemporaries. Twerps is a collection of eleven simple and endearing pop songs. On the sing-along track, "Who Are You," perhaps a nod to the pub-rock scene popularized in the 1980s, the band is joined by members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring , [...]

When we hung out with Twerps the other night, their bosses so to speak, Chapter Music , suggested we get to familiarize ourselves with Velcro , the next big thing to come out of Australia. The Melbourne group has released two EPs already this year, with my favorite being the first, Highest View . There's elements of bedroom electronic pop that they experiment with (fleshed out on their later EP Inadequate Lover ) on the track featured below, [...]

In a week of packed shows, Wednesday was definitely full of shows, from Spoon to Real Estate to Bowerbirds to Keep Shelley in Athens , and we found ourselves at several...actually, all but Spoon. Read on for a few brief notes on Twerps and Real Estate , and Brian Gray's excellent photos. I can't say enough positive things about Twerps . Marty's joyous on stage, their songs are really solid, especially their [...]

Live This Month: April 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #276) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. In curating this podcast, we got the nagging feeling that April is a little slow on the local album release front. We're not sure why that is - Festival fatigue? Buildup for a big summer? - but it's likely only a momentary blip. A number of [...]

Geist by Dive Shallow by Beach Fossils Brooklyn dream pop band, and Beach Fossils side project, Dive are currently putting together their debut LP. 'Geist' is expected to be on the LP and will be released as a 7" on April 24 from Captured Tracks ( buy ). It's similar to Beach Fossils so you should know what to expect from Dive, but the song delves into a cleaner, psychedelic pop sound. Frontman Dustin Payseur claims he's working towards 'making [...]

We here at Consequence of Sound are a mostly Midwest, East Coast-based crew. There's nothing like spreading the love around, though, so Los Angeles , this one's for you. On April 19th, we're proud to present synth-pop wondergirl Frankie Rose , Beach Fossils offshoot DIVE , and Australia's Twerps live from L.A's The Satellite . For her part, Frankie Rose will be bringing tracks off her "sublimely crafted" sophomore solo outing, Interstellar . Z. Cole Smith and his DIVE outfit have thus far released but two [...]

I was a happy kid. Sure, things could have gone a tiny bit smoother with sponsor issues and sound-guy car troubles early, but we pulled together like a community and put on an excellent day of music. Big thanks to all involved, my +1 for bartending early, the bands for helping each other out, whatever it took was whatever it took and the party felt like SxSW of old. So here are a bounty of pics from the 2nd St. Showdown ... Of Young Girls , [...]
It's just a week away folks, and we're here to share some responses from one of our favorite acts of 2011, Twerps. Their self-titled debut blew us away, making our top albums of the year. We're also really excited that the band has found some time in their busy schedule to join us at our party . ATH: What is the most challenging thing about being a band during SXSW or another similar festival? [...]

It's that time again folks, time for SXSW and another awesome show by yours truly here at ATH. This year we're teaming up with our amigos over at local label Sonora Records to bring what is arguably the best SXSW show around. We've got a sweet lineup that's been worked on behind the scenes for months now with some equally incredible local sponsors. Here are the deets on the show: Date: Friday, March 16th Times: Music from 12 noon until 12 midnight. That's 12 friggin' hours [...]
Melbourne quartet Kins played a large role in why i started my first blog, which grew to this site. It goes without saying that i believe they are one of the finest acts to come out of Australia. A short time ago, they released a beautiful clip to their latest single off their upcoming LP, written in Brighton, UK. Also included is Witch Hats clip to 'In The Mortuary' which was taken from their acclaimed album Pleasure Syndrome . Twerps , it's only a matter of time until these guys take over the world, in the meantime, watch their [...]

Twerps - Through the Day from Life or Death PR on Vimeo . This video is silly and fun but mostly I'd like you to hear how effortlessly Twerps pick up the banner of the Of Skins and Heart -era Church and just wave the shit out of it. Don't ever leave me, '80s guitar tones. The Melbourne band will be at SXSW, though their tour's skipping L.A. for the moment. Twerps , their debut, dropped in October on Underwater Peoples and Chapter Music.
Waaay more than necessary, but there were oodles of videos that were highly enjoyable this week. I'm especially proud of Laura Gibson, who stepped out from behind her music to star in a haunting video for her title track song, "Le Grande". Also, watch out for the slow-mo ta ta's in the Labyrinth Ear [...]
You may not know Twerps yet, but with the band opening up for Real Estate on their upcoming tour, expect to know them soon. What should give the band an extra added boost is the video for their song "Through the Day" above--it's pretty great! Twerps tour dates: Dates marked * w/ Real Estate 2/8 - Melbourne, AUS - Corner Hotel 3/2 - Melbourne, AUS - Phoenix Public House 3/9 - Sydney, AUS - The Standard * 3/12 - Melbourne, AUS - [...]
