David Thomas Broughton may be too leftfield to ever have mainstream success, but it's clear that his star in in the ascendancy, in its own peculiar way. Tonight sees him playing to a packed ICA, easily the biggest London venue that he's headlined under his own name. But don't expect ...

Twi the Humble Feather - Higher Than the End Speaking of Animal Collective, this trio from New York have had to deal with their fair share of comparisons to AC; but when I saw them live the other night, it didn't even cross my mind. The encounters of Twi, an "interstellar adventurer" are mapped out by three classical guitarists whose hushed and hocketing vocals absorb you into the trail. Their album Music for Spaceships & Forests is out now on Friendly Ghost Recordings. [...]

I feel really weird this morning. Partly I am whizzed off my tits on painkillers, which at least makes the back pain manageable, and partly I took the advice from this thread a little too seriously last night. Ouch. Pills, Caol Ila and Ardbeg: not a winning combination by the time the morning after comes around. So there's no chat this week, you'll be pleased to know. Here are some gigs. Go to them. But good luck picking what to do on Wednesday, because I've no fucking idea myself. Wednesday 23rd September 2009: [...]

I went to see She Keeps Bees last night at the Wilmington. What a lovely eve it was too. She Keeps Bees are a duo from Brooklyn, but everyone's on about them at the minute, so I'd like to turn your attention to the two fellow Brooklyn based support acts who were both pretty special. First up was Patrick Bower who sung a good few Jens Leckman style folk stuff. Then followed Twi The Humble Feather, who are pretty leftfield form everything that's going on at the moment. If Here We Go Magic covered some choral folk music, you might [...]
We all know that the classic British pagan horror flick The Wicker Man was disastrously remade by Neil LaBute in 2007, to almost universal disdain. Now, if the film had been properly remade in America, keeping the lo-fi creepiness of the original, surely the ideal soundtrack would be provided ...

It seems like every few weeks someone mentions a band that lives within the same 20 block radius in BKLYN that will blow your mind. The most recent recurrence of this phenomenon happened last week when a former NOLA friend now residing in Birmingham (of all places) pointed me in the direction of twi the humble feather . The exchange went something like this Friend: "I heard this awesome BKLYN band the other day, but you probably already know 'em." Me: "Who?" [...]

Similar to NY contemporaries Stars Like Fleas and Twi The Humble Feather (who we also like ), La Strada has an uncanny ability to funnel the romance of old-world instrumentation through new-world amplification. With soaring vocal harmonies, accordion, and string-driven melodies revved up on rock 'n' roll, La Strada transports you to the hills of the Balkans, a street corner in Paris, and back home beneath a Brooklyn skyline. Frontman, songwriter and former aspiring astronaut, James Craft, was born in France and [...]

Andreas Scholl - "Venus' Birds Whose Mournful Tunes" . Countertenors are grown on farms. They are planted in fields of chamomile and sage, fed melted caramels. The most successful countertenors are grown on farms near the ocean, where the clouds will catch and carry some of the sea's salt, and the rain sprinkles it onto the growing countertenors' sand-blond hair. They are culled at the age of 18, evaluated for weight, colour, chest-, mouth- and throat-size. Those who are found suitable are sent to live in mansions atop Greek mountains, surrounded by holly and laurel, where they are [...]

Turns out you won't need to wait for Madden '09 to hear new Franz Ferdinand. Also turns out that last sentence isn't complete nonsense. Alex and friends recently let us know we could <a href=" ">expect a new song on the soundtrack to the EA's forthcoming football timesuck, but as with all things audio/visual, YouTube is first. "Katherine Kiss Me"'s been getting the live treatment for the past few weeks, but this is the best version to stream the web yet. Remember when Nick McCarthy said "there are too many guitar bands out there now" and so [...]
