It is funny how things turn out sometimes. Four months ago, Austin Texas duo Twilight Hotel were turning up in various MM End-of-Year-Best-Of Lists following the release of their superb album When The Wolves Go Blind . On Saturday they turned up at the fag-end of their UK tour just a few miles from chez Mackerel playing a free show at the rather lovely, and certainly intimate, Brasenose Arms in Cropredy – a tiny village outside the turgid town of Banbury. Cropredy has form though, being as it is, the spiritual home of [...]

And so here we have our top ten albums of the year. To be honest the order is fairly arbitrary - on another day it could be a completely different as really these ten records have so little between them in turns of the pleasure and enjoyment they gave us. If you've not acquainted yourselves with any of these then we're pretty sure you won't be disappointed. 2011 - what a fine year for music. 10 Twilight Hotel - When The Wolves Go Blind Download Twilight [...]

Next to share their favourites of the year is part man part canine Barry-Sean... What a fantastic year for music this has been for me. I don't just mean for music that has been produced this year but more about the music that I've discovered from previous years (or, more accurately in most cases, music that has been discovered for me). And, because I've spent a lot of time going backwards and forwards to London on the train, I've had loads of listening time. Hurrah! So here we go. Here's my top ten songs of 2011. [...]

MAD MACKEREL'S TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS For our first ever Festive Feature on Mad Mackerel, we asked twelve of our favourite bands and artists of 2011 to answer twelve questions and we will publish them over the next twelve days taking us up to Christmas Eve. Kicking us off on Day 1 are Twilight Hotel who released the superb When The Wolves Go Blind album back in January. From the jazzy echoes of the title track to the [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

We're late again probably, but we are loving this track by Austin's Twilight Hotel from their third album When The Wolves Go Blind . It is a brilliant combination of alt-country and spaghetti-western desert twang that moves languidly to conclusion via poignant, scalpel sharp lyrics. We will be investigating the rest of the album and the back catalogue for sure. You can buy the album from Amazon here . Download Twilight Hotel - Mahogany Veneer mp3 (from When The Wolves Go Blind)

Have you ever tried listening to an album, but you somehow get obsessed with one song? I've been making attempts to listen to Twilight Hotel's When The Wolves Go Blind but I can't get beyond "Mahogany Veneer." You see, my day job has had me skipping about the country about 70% of the time over the past several weeks and "Mahogany Veneer" is a quintessential road trip song. It's steeped in nostalgia as it bounces around from NYC to Memphis to New Orleans, to Canada and back to the States. The story balances dark observations from [...]

Twilight Hotel are bringing their new album and tour through Calgary this coming weekend at the Kerf Music Showcast at the Ironwood . If you are interested in a slighly 602s influenced indie pop this will be the place for you. I find the music of Twilight Hotel hard to describe, there are so many elements intertwined here, but it feels about what the photo above would make you think it sounds like. That does make sense, right? Regardless, the show is this Sunday and Calgary's own SAVK is going to be performing as well, so it [...]

Erst kürzlich wurde ihr drittes CD-Baby „When the Wolves Go Blind" getauft. Entstanden ist es hauptsächlich während der Tour mit dem letzten („Highway Prayer"). Irgendwie erinnert das Duo aus Texas an eine junge, noch etwas unbekümmertere Ausgabe von Chris & Carla (Mitglieder der Walkabouts). Musikalisch passt der Vergleich wohl nur hinsichtlich [...]

Official | Buy "Mahogany Veneer" is an outstanding track from Twilight Hotel's latest album When the Wolves Go Blind, released just this week. From the quiet softness of the banjo being plucked, the slight waiver in his voice when he sings, nearly whispering at the end, "my old life fell away like mahogany veneer", to the cities it takes you, every inch and aspect of this song is perfect. It sounds like a hymn for marching into the future, quietly urging you [...]

The Treecast is so named because we purchased and decorated our Christmas tree this afternoon. It is an incoherent mess of all sorts of shite, stupid garish baubles, a weird peacock thingy and some foolish attempts at being tasteful which have been utterly overwhelmed by the utter cack which surrounds them. My parents always did seriously tasteful trees actually, so I would imagine they will be downright ashamed of the half-arsed mess we have managed to create. Actually, my dad is the world's biggest Grinch, so he won't give a shite, but my mum might be silently disappointed. [...]
Twilight Hotel - Mahogany Veneer

In the course of my daily toils at MOKB, I'm frequently tempted to write things that I know I'll regret. If I have nothing nice to say about a record, I toss it on the scrapheap and (not unlike Hova) it's on to the next one. Of course, every know and then, I say something that's misconstrued, or more likely, something that's clearly offensive. I know I'll regret it, but sometimes you just gotta let that devil out. What's far less common is regretting something you didn't write. And that brings me to [...]

Bathtub full of Heiny! This year I went and attended OCFF . It was mostly for October 15th since I had to be at another show on Oct 16th. This was my second year attending this. Its always enjoyable and fun to see alot of musicians play under one big hotel. This year they used the Penthouses for the public showcases. What I like about OCFF is you get to see some of the musician and bands you know. Its kind of an industry thing [...]

Winnipeg lovers Brandy Zdan and Dave Quanbury, also known as Twilight Hotel, return with the follow up to their 2006 debut, Bethune . Highway Prayer is 12 tracks ranging from alt.country to cabaret, and just a little rockabilly thrown in for good measure. While they share the vocal duties, I think Twilight Hotel is at it's best when Brandy takes the lead, as is the case with the Concrete Blonde-esqe track, "Iowalta Morningside". You get the feeling that once Brandy fully realizes herself as a singer we will hear great things from her. [...]

Brandy Zdan & Dave Quanbury are Twilight Hotel . They are a dark-twang-noir-cabaret band from Winnipeg. They have a new album coming out at the tail end of January called Highway Prayer . It was produced by Colin Linden , longtime Bruce Cockburn producer AND features the late great Richard Bell (of The Band). This album is further proof that 2008 will be The Year Of Canadian Music . Listen: Twilight Hotel ~ Viva La Vinyl Further study: [...]
