6:50 AM, 16/10/09 So the past two weeks have been one blurry stream of numbers and anxiety and cortisol pump pump pumping through my screaming veins, sweeping all else aside. A bitter soup that fed deep, not wholly rational fears. A contrast medium that highlighted my shortcomings. Heh. And just when I thought I was getting back on track round here. But yesterday a high water mark was reached and the flow has subsided. For now. And I shall use the clarity afforded [...]
I got some really shitty news from Jesse from Twin Crystals . Their practice space was robbed earlier this week and they lost the following gear: - a white Fender jazz bass with no knobs and some blood stained on it that belonged to Ahna - (2) Gibson SGs - a Fender Strat - (2) Technics turntables - a Boss BR1180 hard disc recorder - a Boss BR1600 hard disc recorder - a Boss Superfeedbacker & Distortion pedal The recorders contained some master recordings by White Lung, [...]
Winnie-tv #5 - Japandroids from Winnie Cooper on Vimeo . Winnie is very proud of our hometown boys. Check out our latest episode of Winnie-tv featuring Japandroids. They play the title track of Post Nothing for us from the tiny rehearsal space they rent and talk about a recent near death experience and Calgary. Their second attempt touring North America is underway. The Japandroids are coming to a city near you! Take a look at the groups space for their July through August tour [...]
I started off yesterday by catching (or I guess "attempting to catch" is more correct) Monotonix at Tubby Dog (aka the best hot dog place, this side of Japadog). It took us a little longer than expected to saunter our way down there, so unsurprisingly, the rather tiny "venue" was packed to overflowing when we arrived. One thing about hearing Monotonix while not being able to see them is that you quickly notice that they're much better performers than they are a band. Speaking to the former though, they made sure all the people stuck outside [...]
I made it down to the Rock and Roll is Good for Kids fundraiser last night, getting to the Astoria in time to catch most of Brasstronaut 's set. They were joined by a friend on clarinet for a few numbers, but also welcomed another guest, Shad K , who took the stage before his headlining set to drop a couple of verses. Twin Crystals were up next and killed it as usual. I had to bail before Shad K played his proper set. Virgin Festival hits [...]

Yup, we did it. We were able to find two new Crystal bands consecutive weeks running. Last week it was the Euro-dance Kitsune product Crystal Fighters , this week it's Vancouver's psychedelic-punk-pioneers Twin Crystals . But don't be scared off by the name. Like every good "crystal" band, they have a synth-aesthetic, but the stereotypes stop there. They add a bit of the synth-punk made famous by bands like The Death Set or Team Robespierre , to a dissodent backdrop of psychedelic [...]
Animal Hospital via Tuesday, May 5 Brian S. Ellis , Paul G. Maziar , Animal Hospital , Greg Mullen at Church (FREEEEEEE, 8:00 21+) This is the second night of The Whitehaus putting on a free show at Church. Last one was that Hunted Creatures/Ophibre/Nature/Peace , Loving show and it was AMAZING. This one seems to be just as promising [...]

Here's a super fast recap of the last little while: I made it out to the Media Club last night to catch White Denim . Their debut's a nice blend of soulful garage rock and parts of a bunch of other things, but it sounded a little flat, which is the exact opposite of what they sounded like live. Last night they were raw, energetic, and really loud. ] Japandroids played their last show in Vancouver until near the end of May. [...]

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Biltmore on Sunday. There was significantly less swapping going on compared to last time, although what was there was great and the bands were awesome. Anyone who reads this blog with any regularity knows that Japandroids are one of my favourite bands to come out of Vancouver. This was their last show before they head back East for some dates in Toronto next month, and while 5pm isn't really an ideal rock 'n' roll time, they were great as usual. After TO, they're back for one show and [...]

Been a long time. Sorry. My only New Year's resolution is to put a little more time aside for this thing again. With that in mind, going back to last Tuesday at the Biltmore, there are some photos of Monotonix . It was sort of like Girl Talk. Genre-wise, things were obviously really different, but the spectacle was so amazing it sort of pulled your attention away from the music. And what about the music? Their album certainly indicates that they've got songs--actual songs--but live it seemed like there was a lot of repetitive riffing, [...]

Thanks to everyone who came down to the Biltmore on Sunday. The band situation got a bit mixed up at the last minute, so apologies if you came down to see Edo play (his keyboard was stuck in Little Mountain Studios) or read the posters that said Gang Violence would be on the bill (posters went up and something came up for them). Thanks to the bands who played and everyone who brought stuff down to sell. And a big thanks to the Kitchen Coup for cooking up some amazing snacks. Also, a special thank you to Jody Glenham [...]

I was going to do a review of the Twin Crystals show in Oakland last week but it was such a surreal disaster I'm not even sure if it there's a point. What a horribly organized show! I showed up with Legs at ten o'clock to a class room with some confused looking people in it. No instruments, amps, or anything remotely resembling a show in sight. Legs blurts out "Is this a joke" and the people laughed and said maybe. We started talking to one of the confused guys who turned out to be [...]

Yo I hate to keep repeating myself but these dudes are out of control good. I posted their stuff before but now I'd rather you go to the S.L.U. web store and buy the two girls 7 inch. I mean, how often do you buy records these days? This one is worth it. I'm re-posting "Trinity" because it blew me away especially last night. And I'll save you the trouble of scrolling down to check it. But really, I think a new 7 inch will do everybody a world of good. [...]
Twin Crystals - "Two Girls" from Salazar on Vimeo . Dandilion Wind Opaine of Dandi Wind fame just finished up the video direction for "Two Girls" by Vancouver's Twin Crystals . Twin Crystals was easily one of my favorite acts at one of my favorite nights of SXSW 2008. Twin Crystals - "Spell on You"

You know, I really should have done this a long freaking time ago because I love these dudes so much. Twin Crystals are so intense that I told them they reminded me of Rage Against the Machine after their set at the SLU SXSW showcase. Although they just kind of looked at me funny as I was way too messed up to articulate what I meant by such a bold statement, Rage comparisons are truly the cat's pajamas in my book. At least in terms of a live show. I mean, if I were [...]
Our dudes at Summer Lovers Unlimited have a knack for uncovering bands that are dreamy and bands that are demonic. Vancouver's Twin Crystals are the latter. Here they pair the Bone Machine's brutal growl and clank with psychotic basshead berating. Just say no, kids!

When it comes to discovering music, there truly is no asset greater than the blog aggregators. Any time you need to find a song for a piece or if you need to get something worth listening to and don't feel like asking the dudes at "Unnamed Local Indie Music Store" for their help (and potentially subjecting yourself to their possible ridicule), nothing makes life better than sitting down behind your keyboard and downloading the newest "hot" song on Elbo.ws or Hype Machine. That being said, here's some stuff that trickled into my mailbox or stumbled [...]
