In answering the question "what's the best show you saw during SXSW?", I have to think about it in a couple of different terms. There's the bands that I may have seen times before, who are established acts and generally put on a great show and there are the bands that are really new, almost unknown to me, that completely take me by surprise. I decided to do something a little experimental this year with my best EP list. When I was comparing very short "full-length" albums to longer albums on my best LP list, I kept wanting to hold the time duration against the shorter album. Also, it seems the difference between EPs and LPs can be a bit arbitrary sometimes, so I decided to just draw a line completely based on album length to split up my best album lists. I recently caught the last hour or so of the classic documentary Athens, Georgia Inside/Out . That LP was probably the most used vinyl of the summer between high school graduation and my freshman year of college, Love Tractor and Pylon being two of my faves at the time. Athens has continued to be an almost non-stop source of bands over the years, of all types and sounds, so it's natural that the pysch-tinged, shoegaze-influenced rock of Twin Tigers would hail from the capital of alterna-rock, forming, playing, putting out an EP and touring from Georgia to [...]
Twins Tigers formed a little under a year ago by scattered member of several now defunct bands, and are already set to self-release their debut EP, Curious Faces/Violet Future on June 10th. They tag themselves as "psychedelia" and "shoegaze" on their MySpace, as well as draw references to bands like Liars, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Deerhunter, which is all a pretty fair description in my opinion.
