Do you ever have one of those weekends that seem to go on like a whole entire day longer than most weekends? It's strange but I think I had one of those weekends that just ended yesterday. You know, some people have jobs where they don't even get weekends let alone 3 day ones. Jobs like serial killer and connivence store clerk (I would like to see the overlap of those two jobs on a ven diagram) have to work really strange hours, like nights and holiday Mondays. So if you are one of [...]

“The smog was heavy, my eyes were weeping from it, the sun was hot, the air stank, a regular hell is L.A.” -Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums Hours later, I'm still sneezing dust. Bits of dirt remain caked on my scalp. My feet scream and ache from the loose pebbles or jagged shards of mulch that crept into my shoes all weekend. Skin's on fire, eyes feel dull, and head is weak - they don't make it easy in Los Angeles, CA. Since 2004, Sean Carlson has hosted the "best weekend [...]

This two-piece from San Francisco caught my ear a little bit ago and their new album The Bloom And The Blight is being released tomorrow. I hear a little Manchester Orchestra type vibe in this lead single "My Love Won't Wait". A very much worth checking out track and I am hoping the new album from Two Gallants has plenty more to offer. In the five years between Two Gallants albums, we've followed and admired singer-guitarist Adam Stephens' solo adventures and checked out singer-drummer Tyson Vogel's work in Devotionals. Each good, but the duo have reunited to make "The Bloom and the Blight" (due Sept. 4 on ATO Records), their fourth album and one on par with their most visceral, literate albums. Their aesthetic is folk-rock with dialed to the extremes — a melodic and rhythmic fury (and, alternately, tenderness) matched by Stephens' lyrical bloodletting. "The Bloom and the Blight" reminds you of the best [...]

Two Gallants are stripping down. To get an idea of the overall tightness of The Bloom and the Blight , the San Francisco-based guitar/drums duo’s first album since 2007’s self-titled, it should be noted that at 33 minutes, it’s an entire 25 minutes shorter than 2006’s What the Toll Tells and only five longer than the 2007 EP The Scenery of Farewell . Additionally, save for that weird submerged organ sound on “Willie” and the piano on “Sunday Souvenirs”, you’ll find little here but Adam Stephens’s vocals, his guitar, and Tyson Vogel’s drums - no [...]

Two Gallants’ Adam Stephens is ready for what’s next When Two Gallants played the first Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in 2007, the played the local band stage. Last week, guitarist Adam Stephens and drummer Tyson Vogel were upgraded to the Land’s End main stage, directly before Beck. Stephens came up to the media tent to watch Beck and spent a few moments socializing. What are you looking forward to with the release of your record, The Bloom and the Blight , next month? [...]

After an extended period of inactivity, San Francisco duo Two Gallants is back with their first album in five years – The Bloom and the Blight – which also serves as the band’s debut for ATO Records. Wikipedia refers to the band as a “folk rock duo” but there is an explosive record whose lineage is equal parts 90’s grunge (Meat Puppets and/or Dinosaur Jr. are immediate points of comparison) and gritty alt-country with only a slight element of Dylanish folk thrown into the mix. The aptly titled The Bloom and the Blight is [...]

Lauded director Woody Allen and his film crew descended upon San Francisco recently to begin work on an upcoming movie, giving rise to the sport of Woodyspotting . Here's how it works: San Francisco residents take to Twitter to report on Woody's latest filming location. Simple, right? As a tribute to the acclaimed filmmaker, we've compiled a collection of songs inspired by his often oddball, but nonetheless illustrious, film career. In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]
Stereogum Over the weekend, thousands of fans flocked to this year's Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park. Overcast and chilly weather was offset by the fire from the Metallica pyrotechnics and warm vibes from festival attendees. Neil Young & Crazy Horse turned up their guitars to close out Friday, Metallica blew everyone away with their hellfire on Saturday, and Stevie Wonder dazzled with his barrage of hits to on Sunday. Some of the other highlights included Jack White's impromptu set in the midst of the trees, [...]
