Ruth Swanson Seeing San Francisco's Ty Segall at Halifax Pop Explosion 2010 was one of the most unexpectedly rowdy/violent shows I've ever been in the middle of, which was a bit surprising considering that as rough and garage-y as his stuff is, it's not all that heavy. Certainly not the obvious soundtrack for the bedlam that ensued that evening. Maybe it was just Halifax. Anyways, despite enjoying his music well enough, I've made a point of avoiding his shows as the odds of me getting kicked in the head seem to [...]

SF's Ty Segall, music maker and overall rad dude stopped into NJ radio station, WFMU's The Cherry Bomb Clinic with Terra T, back in June of 2011. He played some tunes and they were smart enough to hit record. The result can be streamed or down loaded, it is up to you to figure out the rest.

It looks like a psych-rock dream collaboration is actually coming to fruition. Spin reports that Ty Segall will team with White Fence for an album of new material due in late-April, titled Hair . This record will see to of the torch-bearers of the psych-garage scene, one from San Francisco and one from L.A., working together as an act appropriately billed as Ty Segall and White Fence. Segall will reportedly handle drums and rhythm guitars on the new record, while White Fence's Tim Presley will be playing bass and lead guitar. The album will be [...]

Tweet Nick Waterhouse will release his debut album "Time's All Gone" on May 1st via Innovative Leisure . For the last year or so, San Francisco native Nick Waterhouse has been plying his R&B, soul-hopped trade, both online and off, with his live shows having been noted for their bombastic and energetic nature. He also released a 73 single for "Some Place" , one that [...]
Lo-fi savant Ty Segall has proven he's capable of revitalizing a well-worn genre like garage rock through a prolific number of recordings over the past few years. Garage rock ain't rocket science, though how it still works -- when it still does work -- can be almost as hard to figure out. At this point, you'd think that pretty much all the possible permutations combining choppy riffs, roughly tuneful vocals and a shroud of hissy production would have been exhausted, yet every once in a while the genre can sound revitalized in the right hands. That's what lo-fi savant [...]
San Fancisco's Terry Malts traverse in the same scuzzy waters as fellow Californians Wavves, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees. What sets their racket out from the pack is the alarming clarity with which you ... read more

Editor's Note Happy New Year! Some of you are probably wondering what happened to us. Well work, family, and of course organizing our little (not so little anymore) variety show Snob Theater has taken quite a bit of time away from the website. We've had probably the best year so far and I'm happy to announce my favorite records of 2011 to launch the reboot of Kata Rokkar. I don't review albums at all but i do listen to a shitload and it's been a great and surprising year for new music. [...]

Ty Segall Goodbye Bread Drag City Records [2011] Fire Note Says: Ty Segall emerges into a stellar singer-songwriter role on Goodbye Bread ! Album Review: A good way to describe Ty Segall's music is to take some of your favorite classic garage rock bands and picture their lead singers going it solo with the same swagger and slightly fuzzed up vocal [...]
If I can speak in broad blanket statements for a moment, I believe that San Francisco is putting out the best music of any scene in the country right now. I know, I know, you're reading a Seattle-based blog, and I certainly know, my bias is completely out of control as I wake and live [...]

So, as the New Year approaches, here are our favourite albums of 2011 for your consideration. Feel free to dispute, argue, or otherwise put us right because, if nothing else, music is as about as subjective topic as it is possible to get. Some of these may not be the "best" albums of the year as far as the critics are concerned, but that matters not, as they were the ones we enjoyed listening to most - give them a try, you might feel the same. 50 Jessica Lea Mayfield [...]
This year in music has been quite impressive. While 2010 gave us clear-cut, stand alone winners, it was much harder to determine which album was Top Ten worthy, let alone the best of 2011. Most sites have published their lists already, and while many albums appear on the same lists, the top ten varies greatly from list to list. Don't expect us to be any different. As we've reported over the last few weeks, 2011 saw the release of plenty of great music. Luckily, in a year with so many great releases, we also had the opportunity to see plenty of great shows. From arena blow outs to dive bar ragers, the following are the 13 best live performances I saw the last 12 months. 1/15: Punch Brothers @ Bowery Ballroom (NYC) Punch Brothers are arguably the most talented touring band today, and their mid-January Bowery Ballroom performance did not dissapoint. Billed as one of their famed "P-Bingo" Nights, Punch [...]
