Welcome to the second edition of SXSW Halfway House Sessions which we shot down in Austin during the SXSW Music Festival. These stripped down one off sessions were crudely shot in a small room inside a downtown Austin apartment with one microphone. A self-described ‘old soul’, Tyler Lyle’s lyrics carry the weight and understanding that go far beyond his twenty-seven+ years. A transplant from Atlanta, GA to Santa Monica, CA Tyler Lyle has self-released several independent projects in the last few years including his latest EP Expatriates : This small collection of [...]

You know when you hear a song and you think "this is classic, they're gonna be a big star"? That was my reaction to Tyler Lyle's new EP, Expatriates, which is available on Bandcamp. The atmospheric opener "Medusa" is my favorite, but the entire album falls somewhere between Elliott Smith and David Gray. Love it. [...]

First of all - sorry for the lack of posts lately. We're still gathering ourselves after a week in Austin @ SXSW. We did manage to make it into the studio to record our fourth podcast - the SXSW Edition. While the podcast is our shortest in length - we don't think there's any less rambling. Oh boy. You know the drill - Download. Stream. Share. As always - we apologize ahead of time. 1) Mystic - Joshua James 2) Most Of The [...]

I have a hard time with winter. It seems like a pretty endless hole of darkness and depression, of being exhausted and anxious. Then the days start getting lighter and longer and I wake up one morning feeling hopeful. That is what this mix is about- a bit of being broken and a bit of getting better. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula Niall Connolly - Samurai Jenny Owen Youngs - Keep Me Away Ben Marwood - Tampa International Josh Ritter [...]
My interest in writing about music has been re-invigorated recently by a number of things. I think part of the reason is that I haven't been going to as many concerts and thus I'm not suffering music fatigue. I think that another part is that the music I've been exposed to this year has been pretty good and has kept my interest. One last thing that I'm going to attribute to having a positive effect is that I'm having a good deal of enjoyment in sharing offline. So with all those factors and other reasons, I sat down and thought [...]

Tyler Lyle is highly under appreciated in my opinion - it's a travesty, people. His last full length The Golden Age & The Silver Girl was played relentlessly in my car for a good while. His songwriting is incredible, in the layout and pacing it's something not seen often enough anymore. Expatriates is an in between album of sorts for Tyler - a dark intermission that doesn't translate directly to his previous albums. It's sweet in parts and greatly thoughtful in it's entirety, something very much worth a listen. Skip over to his bandcamp and grab it. [...]

Tonight I'm grateful that songwriters like Tyler Lyle exist in this world, creating something that is unvarnished and open-hearted amidst the grey rows of quotidian obligations that can often feel overwhelming. Tyler released a new EP Expatriates out of the blue this weekend, and I have spent the last 72 hours listening to it over and over. Ithaca by Tyler Lyle "Ithica" is the final track on the 5-song EP, and it is pure and bittersweet, and it tells [...]

To say that I am consistently surprised and constantly in love with the output from Tyler Lyle would be an understatement. There's a couple things here: This fucking guy is young. By all accounts, it's unlikely dudes his age are ever this talented. The kind of knowing so prevalent in Lyle's songs usually comes with age and experience but there are things in the subtlety of every song and every album he releases that defy his years. I do not and usually am not moved by a song of begets: [...]

When all the green slides out of the leaves, and the fiery yellows light up the skies overhead on my walk to work, there's always the temptation for that Seasonal Affective kick-in-the-ass to creep in also. The chill in the air of October gets my attention and makes me introspect in a way that I do not do in the lazy indulgence of summer. Last year, a good friend of mine commented that my autumn mix was almost too sad to listen to, and yeah - there is something about this season that has, in the past, [...]
It goes without saying that the fall mixtape is my favorite of the year. I've spent the last two weeks narrowing this down to what hopefully will be as rad to hear on your end as it is each time I listen through it on mine. Getting the closest friends, setting your destination for the [...]

On August 7th, the night after they opened for My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses in Kansas City, Blind Pilot hauled ass across some state lines in their sweet blue schoolbus and arrived at my place just in time for dinner. That night they played a living room show for about fifty of us, and I am so pleased to find out that it was recorded so I can share such a special night with you. Ever since I first heard the richly colorful music of Blind Pilot back in 2009, [...]
Jesse Macht recently ended a day of video shoots with this impromptu acoustic performance of "Suitcase Heart," a brand new unreleased song he co-wrote with Pulse Recording's Tyler Lyle.

I decided to keep more tracks than usual in this mixtape. It weighs in at a beefy 317MB. Friday Mixtape 151 is quite a wild ride. The mix contains some pretty intense language... Have a good weekend everyone. As always support the artists and buy music . I talked about Tyler Lyle here earlier in the year; I’d been consuming his breathtaking album, The Golden Age and The Silver Girl at unsafe amounts. It was making me nostalgic for times best left in the rearview mirror, and generally leaving me at a loss for proper function. We’ve all had the type of relationship that Lyle sings about on that album, only he was able to condense the end of his into a dozen songs, whereas the rest of us are only able to move on in short bursts of courage and alcohol. I [...]

You're blinded by the dazzling attractiveness of this sextet, no? Wait until you hear them perform a stripped-down, all-acoustic set at my house on Tuesday, August 7! And then add to the mix that Tyler Lyle is flying out from California to open the show, and I think you got yourself the house concert of the summer. Blind Pilot has been a favorite of mine ever since I heard this song in 2009, via my friend Dainon . Since then, Blind Pilot has continued to release amazing [...]
