Battles Put Pain of Tyondai Braxton's Departure Behind Them for 'Gloss Drop'

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Q + A Jason Frank Rosenberg The loss of a key member is enough to derail even the sturdiest of bands. The death of John Bonham put paid to any further activity from Led Zeppelin while The Who failed to match their previous heights in the wake of Keith [...]

Festival Frolics: Sónar 2011 Fest Bests.

Festival Frolics: Sónar 2011 Fest Bests. Set amidst the sprawling, urbane urbanity of Barcelona, Sónar is a multi-sensory extravaganza as much as it is a "festival". From hazy Estrella Damm-fuelled sunsets in the Ciutat Vella to skull-thumping late nights and sunrises amongst the imposing architecture of L'Hospitalet, the event encompasses so much musically, culturally, experientially in such a relatively concise period of time, said period of time engulfing much of next week. The line up perpetually finds itself at the fore of forward-thinking, tending to contort through a plethora of genres, and the Barcelona leg of this year's bash spanning Thursday 16th, Friday 17th [...]

Strawberry/Vanilla/C hocolate: Battles, Gloss Drop.

Strawberry/Vanilla/C hocolate: Battles, Gloss Drop. Similar to a particular frozen dessert, the Tyondai Braxton-less Battles future entrapped in a Gloss Drop is something of a brain-freezing sensory overload on first indulgence, best digested sedately and above all slowly. With the vinyl run of the Matias Aguayo-featuring Ice Cream coming in three flavours, the confectionary van twinkles and gym club yelps of the soi-disant "single" are far from the only delectable minutes on an astounding record, for Gloss Drop effortlessly melts into the iPod psyche, swimming in splendour for the most part. Opener Africastle is a resolute fortress of avant-garde menace, [...]

Battles vs Tyondai Braxton

Separation and multiplication is possibility for destruction. Foremost example: At the Drive-In. Fallout: The Mars Volta, Sparta. To which we classically say, The Mars Volta, duh. Sparta sucks. Which isn't true. Aside from the Tremulant EP and the first few songs of De-Loused , Sparta is better (though, I haven't listened to either of their latests). Which is all nothing anyway, because neither is At the Drive-In. Which is the lesson. Now: [...]

Battles at the Bottom of the Hill-San Francisco

Battles at the Bottom of the Hill-San Francisco Fans waited impatiently for Battles to arrive on stage Tuesday night. The sold out show at the Bottom of the Hill certainly drew attention to the band's new album, Gloss Drop . Fans were mostly curious to see what the band would sound like without their past singer, Tyondai Braxton . But hours after the doors had opened, both fans and band members were eager to start an energetic rock show. Drummer John Stanier immediately started to work up a sweat by shaking some sleigh bells for their first song. As [...]

Impending Scadenza?: Dutch Uncles, Cadenza.

Impending Scadenza?: Dutch Uncles, Cadenza. More jaunt than you can shake a Grand National at and more dubious jumpers than a Butlins-themed Nightmare Before Christmas, Dutch Uncles probably oughtn't exist in this day and age, this day being lined with sunlight that looks as though it's never to dissolve and this age being 2011. Bask in Fragrant for 2008, X-O for 2007, and eponymous opener Cadenza for admittance into some befuddling rabbit hole of wonk that's pretty much devoid of such superficial era labelling. Read wonk, not wank as in amidst the omnipresent time signature jolts and guitar jangles lies treasure, the roughest [...]

Magical Music Roundabout: Battles Drip Globular.

Magical Music Roundabout: Battles Drip Globular. Last night we swooned to Glasvegas' Ice Cream Van onboard Bristol's Thekla , and keeping things cold and creamy, today we finally got round to spinning Ice Cream, the first glimpse into Battles' forthcoming LP Gloss Drop, scheduled for an early June release on Warp . Proving there's a healthy existence after the departure of Tyondai Braxton, the track, featuring pelvic thruster Matias Aguayo is a buoyant affair, coming across more or less as athletic afrobeat. Or Coconot tumble dried, churned up with Graceland. Pick your flavour, whatever, stream below now. [...]

The Daily Choice: Battles - Ice Cream

I will admit its strange to hear a Battles track without the trademark croon of now departed Tyondai Braxton. Honestly, everything up until the appearance of guest vocalist Matias Aguayo sounds like some permutation of a Battles song, but when the voice, all straightforward singing slaps you in the jowls, it's another ball game altogether. [...]

Tyondai Braxton's "Central Market"

Tyondai Braxton's Central Market came out a year and a half ago. As a fan of Braxton's band Battles, I was curious at the time, but after listening to a few clips online and some blurbs about its "classical music" nature, I wrote it off as a likely unnecessary and self-indulgent side project. Then a couple of weeks ago I was noticing a buzz about Lincoln Center's inaugural Tully Scope music

Battles – Ice Cream (feat. Matias Aguayo)

Battles – Ice Cream (feat. Matias Aguayo) 'Ice Cream' is our first taste from math-rock experimentalists Battles second full length album. Glass Drop is set to drop (see what I did there?!) on June 6th or 7th depending on which side of the pond you're on, courtesy of Warp Records . The record is both hotly anticipated given the reaction the bands debut LP, Mirrored received all the way back in 2007, and nervously anticpated after keyboardist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton left at the back end of last year. 'Ice Cream' is an summery, stuttering, odd little [...]

Schnipper's Slept On: Tyondai Braxton, Lincoln Center, Classical Problems

End of Week Recap: February 28 – March 6

It's been another long week here at CoS-I think you know by now how taxing it can be to keep up with contemporary music, especially in this "anything, anytime, anywhere" era that we're living in. But at least it's over... for now, that is. Starting next week we get to put ourselves through more restless nights and near-fiascos. Yeah, I guess we don't get much of a break here after all. So why do we put ourselves through all of this? You know what they say, oftentimes it's the things that you care about [...]

Battles Preparing Gloss Drop for June

Battles Preparing Gloss Drop for June Battles has paired down to a three-piece, but the departure of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton hasn't quashed my excitement for the new record, Gloss Drop , one bit. (That album title, by the way, is the win). In fact, as long as Ian Williams is on board, I'm on board. The new record is out June 7th via Warp and is to be followed by an extensive multi-continent tour spanning several months. If you fancy having your mind blown, try these guys live. Later this year the band will help curate ATP 's Nightmare Before Christmas [...]

Tyondai Braxton readies full-piece orchestra show in New York City

While his former bandmates in Battles are gearing up for a sophomore album (and world tour to boot), former frontman Tyondai Braxton is readying his own show for March 7th at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. The event, part of Lincoln Center's Tully Scope Festival , will see Braxton perform select pieces from Dutch composer Louis Andriessen along with the live debut of his 2009 Warp release, Central Market . While Braxton made the record on his own, he has [...]

Tyondai Braxton plays the Walker Art Center

Tyondai Braxton plays the Walker Art Center Brooklyn, NY's modern experimental composer,multi-instrumentalist and former guitarist/singer in post-rock band Battles, also the son of avant garde composer Anthony Braxton, Tyondai Braxton . Braxton has left Battles and will perform music from 2009's solo debut Central Market along with The Wordless Music Orchestra. Championed by Glenn Branca, Bjork and the Kronos Quartet, Braxton is sure to challenge, inspire and feel with joy those lucky enough to see him. Tyondai Braxton with The Wordless Music Orchestra Fri. New album from Battles

Matias Aguayo - Ritmo Juarez (Kompakt)
Replacing Tyondai Braxton with some choice guests, experimental math-rockers Battles are following up Mirrored with Gloss Drop . Now a trio, the band's sophomore LP will be released in early June on Warp Records with contributions from Gary Numan , Boredoms lead guy Yamantaka Eye, Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead , and Chilean-German artist Matias Aguayo (check out his excellent Cumbia-house track below). Tracklist: 01. Africastle 02. Ice Cream [ft. Matias Aguayo] 03. [...]

Wordless Music Series 2011 Schedule, "Riceboy Sleeps" Concert Streaming on WQXR

Wordless Music Series 2011 Schedule, "Riceboy Sleeps" Concert Streaming on WQXR Stream It : WQXR.org Wordless Music is devoted to the idea that the sound worlds of classical and contemporary instrumental music - in genres such as indie rock and electronica - share more in common than conventional thinking might suggest. To illustrate the continuity between these worlds, the series pairs rock and electronic musicians in an intimate concert setting with more traditionally understood classical music performers. The goal: to bring audiences together, and to introduce listeners from both worlds to composers that they might otherwise not encounter, for a completely [...]
