Similar to a particular frozen dessert, the Tyondai Braxton-less Battles future entrapped in a Gloss Drop is something of a brain-freezing sensory overload on first indulgence, best digested sedately and above all slowly. Last night we swooned to Glasvegas' Ice Cream Van onboard Bristol's Thekla , and keeping things cold and creamy, today we finally got round to spinning Ice Cream, the first glimpse into Battles' forthcoming LP Gloss Drop, scheduled for an early June release on Warp . Proving there's a healthy existence after the departure of Tyondai Braxton, the track, featuring pelvic thruster Matias Aguayo is a buoyant affair, coming across more or less as athletic afrobeat. I will admit its strange to hear a Battles track without the trademark croon of now departed Tyondai Braxton. Honestly, everything up until the appearance of guest vocalist Matias Aguayo sounds like some permutation of a Battles song, but when the voice, all straightforward singing slaps you in the jowls, it's another ball game altogether. Battles has paired down to a three-piece, but the departure of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton hasn't quashed my excitement for the new record, Gloss Drop , one bit. (That album title, by the way, is the win). In fact, as long as Ian Williams is on board, I'm on board. Brooklyn, NY's modern experimental composer,multi-instrumentalist and former guitarist/singer in post-rock band Battles, also the son of avant garde composer Anthony Braxton, Tyondai Braxton . Braxton has left Battles and will perform music from 2009's solo debut Central Market along with The Wordless Music Orchestra.
