March Madness just ended and all of you bracketologists out there are probably pretty sad you'll have to until next year to get your bracketology on, but don't fret! Back for a second year by popular demand, in a move that is sure to establish itself as a Portland institution - it's Rigsketball ! If you're late to the game, Rigsketball is halfcourt, 3v3 basketball played on a regulation hoop attached to the back of a van, just about anywhere the cops won't bust the party. However, when played in a bracket-style tournament with 32 of Portland's most ballin' [...]

photos and words by Alex Crick It's exactly 505 miles from the KEXP studios to the heart of downtown Boise and that's exactly how far I traveled to catch the inaugural year of Treefort Music Fest . Featuring 138 bands from the Northwest and beyond Treefort Fest bills itself as a new and emerging artist festival, which it was in every way. After arriving in Boise late Friday afternoon, about a day and a half after the festival had already begun, I caught my first performance with Sister Crayon . [...]

The Shins [Ed. note: We weren't lucky enough to partake of SXSW's mighty cornucopia of musical delights, but our pal and former Austinite, Sara, made the trip and was just darn cool enough to write this here post for us and you. She highlights some of the best bands listened to and food tasted, and gives some handy tips for any festival newbies looking to go in the future. Thanks, S!] Words and photos by Sara Ever fancied a trip to Austin, TX to check out [...]

I get the impression that if bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and Arcade Fire never existed, Typhoon frontman Kyle Morton would still be doing his thing, quite possibly as an earnest solo folkie type without the explicit influence of those bands. But the aforementioned bands did happen and seem to have had an influence on the musical output of Morton and Co. The signifiers are all there: horns, strings, gang vocals, a large number of bandmates - many of the things that made those bands so memorable and well loved seem to be evident in Typhoon as [...]

Typhoon - CPR/Claws Part 2 (Pinscape Remix) Pinscape is the electronic project of Matthew Flook and Andrew Wisler, two friends from Portland, Oregon. The duo just finished a outstanding remix for fellow Portland, Oregon band Typhoon. After peeping the remix below head over to Pinscape's soundcloud for more awesome music. Enjoy

The music of Typhoon is big and connective and incisive; it's thematically smart and expansive. This Portland band resides together in a big Victorian house (sketched on the cover of their latest EP ), and perhaps it's just because I live in a cohousing community myself, but the resonance of this arrangement radiates audibly in the wooly coziness of their music. Some months ago, I got to see Typhoon live for the first time - an event I welcomed with intense anticipation of the joy to come. I had watched videos of their [...]

SXSW is pretty intimidating to those that want to trek across the musical Disney Land that is this crazy festival. To an audience member it's like a Cheese Cake Factory menu and your decision could end up being a serious mistake. Plus add long lines to shows you probably won't get into (The Roots, Fiona Apple, Grimes, Miike Snow, The Shins, etc) and the walking (OH THE WALKING!) from venue to venue can be daunting. Well we here at Kata Rokkar are going to make it easier for you to check out bands you might like. If you don't like [...]

I am bringing Typhoon and Motopony to our neighboring hippie hamlet of Manitou Springs, to an art gallery the week after next! This show is guaranteed to be incredible. As in, I personally guarantee it 100% or I will give you your money back (and shake my head slowly as I wonder what's wrong with your ears). So excited! Tell your friends! TYPHOON and Motopony March 20th at 7pm (early show! school [...]

Over the last 14 years, Pickathon Music Festival has grown into a premiere summer destination for music lovers and performers alike. Zale Schoenborn started the scrappy festival with his wife, family, and some friends, and a continued family-run mentality has kept it a unique experience. Situated on Pendarvis Farm outside of Portland, OR, Pickathon's five core organizers have designed unparalleled sustainability efforts and a community atmosphere that has musicians and fans returning year after year. With another indie-all star lineup, neigh perfected greening practices, and their projected first-ever sell-out, this year might be the festival's finest yet. [...]

I'm doing what I can to get caught up on all of the music I've missed in the last month. Here's what's making life better at the moment. . . Dream Brother - "Haunted Heart (ft Paul Spranger)" I was already stoked to have Ian from One For The Team putting out some solo material [...]

I once wrote that this feature, this Bandcamp Five business, would run like clockwork. Like a church, I said. I am a liar. Life is so hard sometimes. But then, MUSIC! I found these lovely jams for you. Because I love you and care about your heart. Really. ** {From Winter Singles } ** [ Ed. Note : This is quite possibly the most beautiful modern-day instrumental I've ever heard. What this does to my heart I cannot put into [...]

The Ozark Mountains, and all its rivers and streams, are beyond the ideal setting for music played in real time. In real life. 10 miles from me one way there is a quaint little smattering of primitive cabins on the river. 10 miles the other way is the old, restored mill, with its own little happy gathering of dwellings. It would seem to me that land such as this would breed such beautiful music but in terms of those making it around here, there are no terms. It's not happening. The only strumming of a guitar the trees [...]
The wild, celestial scale of musical largesse has tipped off its fulcrum in my favor, and we are currently splashing around in a sparkly, melodic deluge of fantastic upcoming Fuel/Friends concerts that I am hosting in the coming weeks. I feel truly awed and thrilled; all four of these special headliners have been listed in my year-end tops lists before. You're invited to all four warm wonderful nights, or if you have friends in Colorado, please let them know. Whoever comes from the farthest will get a song dedication and a hug. [...]

As we get set for the final episode for the popular NBC show, Chuck airing on January 27, I mournfully compile a list of some of my favorite songs from the most recent season. We've watched Chuck (played by Zachery Levi) grow from a dorky nobody working for the "Nerd Herd," into a full blown kick-butt spy. Meanwhile, the producers of the show have given us great snippets of independent music that we could only imagine Chuck, Sarah (played by Yvonne Strahovski), and Morgan (played by Joshua Gomez) listening to in their free time. [...]
