Marc Bolan was one of the best known musicians of the 1970s and he'd hardly be characterized as a cult figure if it were not for his early, tragic death. But before he hit number one and became a household name with his electric glitter glam persona, an early non-abbreviated Tyrannosaurus Rex released a string of "fantasy folk" records in the late 60s that gradually progressed toward psychedelia and perfection. Tyrannosaurus Rex was comprised of Bolan and percussionist/multi-instrument alist Steve Peregrin Took. Together with producer Tony Visconti (of Bowie fame) they recorded Unicorn very quickly in 1969, [...]

This week's In The Window takes a look at She Said Boom on College St., which offers a good selection of albums and books.

Neon Indian mastermind Alan Palomo is trying his hardest to introduce the fratty masses to some solid older music - the stuff he grew up on (or more likely his parents did). Earlier this year he sat down for a Stereogum curated interview with Peter Gabriel . Now he has taken on the T. Rex classic "Children of the Revolution". In a twist of indie music irony, maybe Palomo is a child of the chillwave revolution? The Violent Femmes took on the tune as well a few years ago. Who does it better? [...]

What better band to review on the day of the Aintree Grand National, which is held down the road from the Devil's abode, than an Irish band called Groom. Groom Genre: Happy Hardcore / Pop / Children From: Dublin, Ireland Groom have been around a few years having arisen phoenix like from the ashes of alt-folk band Settler in 2004. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Xgcxd9wtXUE Because I heard "Telegram Sam" being blared out of a bar last week. Also, because Marc Bolan named his son Rolan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =du7jfDYe5LI Download: MP3: T. Rex-"Children of the Revolution" MP3: T. Rex-"Telegram Sam"

A happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Thank you for continuing to read these pretentious polemics-the support is much appreciated. Really, now is the time for us all to give thanks that we're not being ruled by a gang of ascetic Pilgrims with a predilection for butter churning and ruffled shirts. After all, take a look at good ol' John Winthrop above; something tells me he wouldn't have been too into Zappa. There was a time last February when I almost spent a few hundred dollars on a plane ticket to go visit the wild horses of Georgia's Cumberland Island . I ended up not going, but hear me roar, we'll all make it down there soon enough. A wild horse is nothing that these eyes have had the pleasure of bouncing up to this brain, but I hope that the sight is not nearly as disappointing as I imagine it to be. See you soon. [...]
good news from freak-folk-land, readers! GMS had long considered devendra banhart a respectable tyrannosaurus rex tribute act who would never raise his game and pen ' ride a white swan '; always destined to be indie-rock's second-best r. kelly fan. but here's his new video, for the tropicalia-style 'carmensita' . it brings back memories of watching the mahabharat on saturday afternoons in the early 90s. the BBC needs to bring that back - it was like the wire , only in [...]

Most people my age who care a lot about music have replaced their vinyl libraries from the 60's and 70's with CDs and iTunes downloads (unless perhaps they are still playing their vinyls). But out of all my LPs, there is only one vinyl that made the transition to CD. Way back when I was a freshman in college, I had a good friend named Brian who was my music mentor. One night in his black-lit den with the glowing psychedelic posters, he put a record on the turntable and said, "You have to listen [...]
