Your Sunday slate: ► Indie-rock quartet LA Font ought to be in a chipper mood tonight — the foursome's recent Kickstarter campaign to fund the making of a full-length album met its goal this past week. LA Font headlines the Bootleg Bar tonight, on a bill with the Ross Sea Party and Minneapolis indie-rockers Rogue Valley . ► Britpop-inspired trio Lovers Drugs play the Hotel Cafe — this weekend, they released an ambitious 20-minute short film/music video, directed by Paul Aspuria, that emcompasses all the songs on their [...]
Genres are an artifice by which we categorize musical sounds. Closely related genres often overlap. These "crossover" albums are sought by many an artist. A successful country artist can have a hit that also hits the folk or rock charts. A soft rocker may also make the jazz charts. Genre cubbyholes, while loved by record labels as they allow the company to market to a particular consumer group, actually may hinder the development of music. For example, if a song is characterized as "Christian Rock" it is unlikely to make the "Heavy Metal" rock [...]

It's a good day to get off to an early start: ► The Gourmet Music Carnival — part food fair, part flea market and part music festival — goes off at Los Angeles State Historic part from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Walking Sleep, Francisco the Man and Mad Planet among the bands performing. Set times here . ► Sparta's Jim Ward (pictured) headlines the Satellite behind his solo release "Quiet in the Valley, On the Shores the End Begins & the Electric Six," [...]
Here's one for the kids: Ukulele-toting songstress Elina makes bright, chipper pop songs that don't seem to have a cynical bone in their body. The new video for the title track off her recent album "Mesmerized," released in April, feels like recess (and we could all use that once in a while), with director David Ferino bringing all kinds of whimsical touches to the Hawaii-bred songwriter's folky confection. New York sports fans may recognize the voice — the 2006 tune "Dream Like New York," written with her singer-songwriter husband Tyrone Wells , was used as a rallying [...]

I've been quite lazy in my posting around here lately. I've been shooting down idea after idea in my head, until something magical just kinda fell into my lap. Before I just endlessly spill the details of my personal life, let me just get right into why I'm back and what I'm bringing with me. Last fall I had this idea of making weekly mix-CD's; some for myself and some for others, but at least one a week. The plan kinda fell through after only a month and a half, but I did get a great mix or two out [...]

This Thursday, check out a free outdoor show featuring Tyrone Wells and Meiko . I've featured Meiko a few times before, and been a fan of Tyrone for years. Tomorrow, they're teaming up for "The Sound of Summer," a weekly concert in downtown LA's Pershing Square and sponsored by 100.3FM. Meiko goes on at 8pm, and Tyrone's set starts at 9. There are few music venues in Portland as intimate as the KINK.FM Live Performance Lounge. Nestled in the center of a suburban looking office building, less than 200 yards from the I-405 and in the heart of downtown, it's a dimly lit conference room turned music cave where wonderful things occur on a practically daily basis. The first half of February is no different. M. Ward, Fiction Family, Tyrone Wells, Lisa Hannigan, Ben Taylor and Todd Snider will spend the lunch hour with about 50 or 60 lucky listeners and staff members; playing a few songs, telling [...]

After hoofing at least 10 miles throughout the day on Saturday we wisely decided to catch the bus most of the way Sunday afternoon. Sunday's schedule featured the least well known acts of the weekend, and oddly enough I ended up catching portions of 16 acts that day (17 if you count the two gents shown above). The day started off with singer/songwriter Tyrone Wells. If the O.C. was still on television (is it?) I'm sure Tyrone would have made an appearance, and if it wasn't for a decent story he told of an encounter with James [...]

Up-and-coming artist Jason Reeves will hit the road with fellow singer-songwriter Tyrone Wells for a two-month tour that launches August 28th, 2008 in San Francisco. Jason Reeves is touring in support of his major label debut album, 'The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache (and Other Frightening Tales)' , which will be released on Warner Bros. Records September 9, 2008. Reeves' hook-filled songs of love, hope, heartbreak, and renewal, matched with his engaging tenor voice, propelled him to the #1 position on the MySpace Folk chart (unsigned) [...]
