Today we flash back on another of our favourite labels: SUB POP RECORDS . They're responsible for the careers of a diverse range of bands, from Nirvana to Dum Dum Girls to our very own Husky . And they're celebrating 25 years in the business on July 13. That means that they've been around since 1988. Before that founder Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop about American independent artists and their labels. He started releasing compilations [...]
Rare Monk resemble a mix of Celtic punk, avant-garde rock in the vein of Man Man, and southern gypsy-pop complete with quick-moving strings and snarling vocals. For a more concise comparison, think Modest Mouse with an extra shot of caffeine

The SD supergroup is like the musical version of The Avengers // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

A trama [...]

a boundary in spacetime through which matter and light can only pass inward towards the mass of the black hole. Nothing, not even light, can escape from inside the event horizon. The event horizon is referred to as such because if an event occurs within the boundary, information from that event cannot reach an outside observer, making it impossible to determine if such an event occurred." ugly casanova - barnacles

Perhaps the least-known Sub Pop records of the last ten years - okay, maybe Combustible Edison or the Blue Rags might be more obscure - Ugly Casanova's Sharpen Your Teeth is everything I always wanted Modest Mouse to sound like but never found. What initially drew me to this record wasn't Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, but Red Red Meat members Tim Rutili and Brian Deck, and the Black Heart Procession's Pall Jenkins. I wish I remember how I found out about it originally, because I would credit whoever gave me the record, but alas I have no idea [...]

hola amigos and amigas! i had all good intentions of getting back to my "should have been listening to" today, i had 3 lined up, but as i was about to upload the shit last night i got to fucking around w our new cats. keep in mind i have never been a cat person, actually i have always disliked cats, but on christmas day these two lil assholes showed up at our backdoor. of course being the soft i am, and the wife having been wanting a cat, we took them in. we took em to the [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News In July, Modest Mouse had to end their show at Brooklyn N.Y.'s Williamsburg Waterfront after only five songs, thanks to a nearby lightning storm. The band returned to the venue just under two months later to nearly perfect weather: a cool, clear autumn night, the kind that nearly makes up for a summer of oppressive, broiling days. From opener 'Gravity Rides Everything' on, Modest Mouse were constantly enveloped in smoke pouring [...]

it's going to be called "the trouble with river cities". it's going to be a real downer. got the bulk of it selected... just need to trim it and make it flow better. this song will be on it. ugly casanova - hotcha girls
**Note** I'll probably just post one more song today, and it'll probably be later today. Jacksonville's first California Pizza Kitchen has opened, and I've never been to one of those, so priority calls! Heh heh. Ugly Casanova, " Here's to Now " (MP3 courtesy of MPR's Current Song of the Day ) One of the first "independent" songs that really got me thinking about doing my own blog was Ugly Casanova's "Things I don't Remember" (Hey! Here's the original MP3 from their label site, Sub Pop !) I [...]

I have some friends that climb 142ers on a regular basis. We're talking weekly. Like some real "Cliffhanger" type shizz. Rock-slides. Cold weather. Adrenaline pumping. Alright, you get the idea. I rode my bike last Saturday for a grand total of twelve miles and I felt like I was on top of the world. Granted, most of it was city riding, not to be compared to mountain biking. For lovers of the outdoors, and film enthusiasts, tomorrow night is a chance to take in an amazing journey on film and meet the filmmaker in the process. [...]
Wavves put out an Animal Collective-y album called 'King of the Beach.' That's not completely accurate. The band, infused with part of late Jay Reatard's band, put out a surf rock album that channels Animal Collective, Weezer, and Beach Boy pop- a departure from their noise pop sound. It will surely be a hit with hipsters because they sound like Vampire Weekend at times. (UPDATE: Pfork gave them 8.4). Wavves had an interesting album last year, then had a disastrous tour, with frontman Nathan Williams getting onstage coked out, on ecstasy, valium, and booze and getting [...]

So erm, does not having a traditional working week mean Friday is a bit less Friday-y now? Kinda, I guess. I have been deprived of my much-cherished King's Wark lunches by the fact that I am on the other side of town now (well, not quite, but far enough away to make it impractical) and nowadays if I have two pints at lunch and then skive away the afternoon I am basically just ripping myself off. Which rather makes it less fun, I have to confess. Mind you, it's sunny as arse out there, so the sooner I [...]

Ah, the beautiful heat of a sweltering New Jersey summer. It doesn't get more wonderful than that. For everyone who whines about the humidity all summer long, just remember your whining when you're stuck inside because of the snow drift that covers your car in February. A little sweat does everyone some good. And a little sun never hurt anyone. I may have almost died of heat stroke when I went for a run on a crazy hot day when I got back from Scotland in May, but that didn't deter me. The hotter the better, I say. Even while [...]

Yo! Here is a bunch of stuff you might be interested in hearing/downloading/jamming to/raising an eyebrow at! Your options are basically limitless! For more jams or by any of these artists use the ‘tags’ links at the bottom of the post! ♫ Klaxons - Flashover / Klaxons' massively acclaimed 2007 debut never struck a chord with me but now that I have been revisiting it I am realizing I missed out on an awesome album. This new track of theirs isn't getting me as hyped as I am [...]

This made our weekend so much that we kept it to ourselves until today: Snoop Dogg has released one killer video in tribute to the baddest bitch in vampire lore. More like it: FROM THE NEWS NEST: Snoop Dogg and Susan Boyle, WTF? and more. FROM THE NEWS NEST: Slipknot bassist dead at 38 and more. FROM THE NEWS NEST: Lauryn Hill performing Rock the Bells and more.

Photo Credit: Emmett Malloy Wend Mag reported last month: "The rain didn’t stop hundreds of fans from crowding the doors at Portland’s Hollywood theatre in anticipation of the premier of 180 Degrees South: Conquerors of the Useless . It’s difficult to say precisely how many turned out for the much-anticipated premier (the theater, which seats 468 people, was sold out if that puts things into perspective), but it is safe to say that few, if any of them went home disappointed." 180 [...]

A few weeks ago, I stumbled across some brand new live footage of Isaac Brock performing unreleased tracks under his side-project moniker Ugly Casanova . After some digging, turns out Brock teamed up with Brushfire Records to help soundtrack the Patagonia film 180° South . Between the excitement stirred from eight new Ugly Casanova tracks and the hanging of Brock's portrait in Portland's city hall , it's made for a few very interesting weeks. When originally figuring out the soundtrack to 180° South [...]
