In September we toasted the best new bands of 2011 . Bright futures for those guys! But come this time of year it's also important to remember the musical groups who called it a day. Some of these acts were taken from us before their time, while others imploded due to overwhelming apathy. Herewith our look at all of them, good and bad and who? . Thanks again to Matt Neatock for the video production assistance. Please hold your applause until the end. Read More...
When I find a band that I fall in love with it is usually their debut release and I have to wait another year or more before I get new tunes from them. So, imagine my delight when I am given The Uglysuit . Six friends making delightful music, been together since '06, their debut album came out in 08' another release this year... Then a bombshell drops... They are splitting up! I wanted to keep listening to their music, get excited about their next release, harass my neighbours with their tunes blaring loudly but [...]
This week The Uglysuit released their final album, appropriately titled Awwww, Schucks via Everybody Loves Everybody Records. Stream tracks from the new album on their Bandcamp page . The Oklahoma band is calling it quits after five years and two full-length albums, the latter of which they say is their best work to date. "It's awesome to see all of our thoughts and creativity come to life. It's amazing how six people can come together and make such fun, intricate, and spiritual tones, to become one, " said bassist/producer Dustin Maynord. [...]

Speculation about the act lineup for the North Coast Music Festiva l began as early as March when it was announced the first edition of the fest would take place over labor day weekend, September 3 - 5, in Union Park - the same park Pitchfork Fest calls home. Well, the speculation can end today as the North Coast Music Festival has revealed it's debut artist lineup, which culls together an eclectic group of hip-hop, electronic and jam band acts. The festival will boast three headliners, presumably one for each day, and include the [...]

H-T-A is lucky enough to be receiving the inside scoop on the Austin shenanigans courtesy of music lover/writer/glutton for chaos Darci Spiker . With final day emotion and fatigue setting in, is there any enthusiasm or energy remaining for yet more music? With the aid of Mexican martini the answer is, thankfully for us, yes indeedy..... Araba Films If there's one thing Austin, Texas needs during Spring Break, it's some live music. Particularly in the form of a day party. The past few years I've been very lucky to have been able to help put on some fantastic parties with some of my favourite blogger buds. And while the Hot Freaks marque has been put to bed for the time being, I'm very happy to be able to announce that You Ain't No Picasso , My Old Kentucky Blog , [...]

Phil Harder Did anyone see this coming? I certainly didn't. This question, of course, is only relevant to those of a certain age/era for whom the name, " Bettie Serveert " still means something. To everyone else: get off my lawn. Aside for the unfamiliar: the Betties were the Netherlands' finest rock export since Golden Earring and a staple of '90s college rock with three albums on Matador full of crunchy guitar pop and Carol Van Dijk's expressive vocals. Entering the 21st century, they explored side projects and [...]

The Uglysuit at CMJ 2009 ( more ) Photo : Jon Klemm When I last posted about The Uglysuit , I was whining about missing their last couple of NYC gigs, but this time I'm all over the two shows they're playing tonight ( Feb 24 ) at The Living Room (5:30 PM All Ages, 10 PM 21+). Also, since my last post, they've added a bunch of new tour dates for Canadian Music Week and firmed up a couple of SXSW gigs. [...]

Yannick Grandmont It's a bit eerie, but with the exception of an in-store in a couple weeks, details noted further down, I've got nothing going on in the way of live music for more two weeks until Canadian Musicfest starts on March 11. And that's really just fine with me, because the double-shot of CMW/CMF and SxSW was exhausting when I was a younger man - these days, I am going to need the downtime to rest up in order to survive that gauntlet of concert-going, airport-hopping and breakfast taco-eating. And [...]

"Some people say...at the end of the day...that there's a life that's magnificent..." Those are some lyrics from The Uglysuit 's "The Magnificent Life," which you can hear below. I dunno if it's the fading pangs of a hangover or the fact that one is given a sense of clarity after a friend's bachelor party, but this song really makes sense to me right now (and no, I can't explain why). It also gives an excuse to start our SXSW (or the music event I never get to go to) watch list a [...]

The Uglysuit at Rockwood Music Hall (10/23/09) Photo : Jon Klemm Oklahoma's The Ugly Suit were here during CMJ 2009 and I while I unfortunately wasn't able to see them play during the marathon, Jon Klemm captured a few pics of their set at the SPIN Magazine party at the Rockwood Music Hall. They were just here again last week (at The Living Room and Bowery Electric), and once again I missed them, but this time I was't too busy, I actually just found [...]
The first round of bands scheduled to play SXSW next year includes Deer Tick, The Uglysuit, Princeton, Nicole Atkins and The Black Sea, Frightened Rabbit, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Psalm One, Japandroids, The Pack A.D., 9th Wonder and nearly 200 more. The fest goes down March 17-21, 2010 in Austin, TX. If you're into the film or interactive worlds, both of those parts of the festival kick off March 12. Alongside hundreds of performances and parties, those trekking down to the Lone Star state can also catch panels, films, mentoring sessions and some of the [...]

What an excellent month for music October was. Here are some of the best songs we posted in the last 31 days (in case you missed them), and as a bonus a few we didn't manage to squeeze in, but wish we had. All are well worth your time and ears, and if you like what you hear, please do go and buy the EPs or albums.Roll on November!Previously posted (check the labels on the left hand side of the
Folk rock-shoegazers, The Uglysuit, have independently released "1902 Deep Ocean" from their upcoming EP, Merrycan Prairie. This psychedelic tune is part creepy, part soothing--perfect for the fall season. The Uglysuit 1902 Deep Ocean [MP3]

We spent a large portion of the Wednesday hanging out with our buddies over at The Studio at Webster Hall . We had some great bands on hand to keep us company. We teamed up with Rachael Rays' Feedback and the folks over at Amnesty International to put on two showcases, one during the day and one in the afternoon. The daytime showcase consisted of performances by Orenda Fink , Good Old War , Look Mexico , The Uglysuit , and Shayna Zaid [...]

We've dished out quite a bit of content this week, so I suppose I'll get to the music list early. If you're just tuning in, I've switched up the way these Radio Dick posts go, attempting to offer a little more commentary on the tracks I'm posting. This week, I've got an interesting mix of material from around the globe. The scene's been a tad quiet with all of the madness going on at CMJ. Hopefully, our writer James, who just spent the week rambling around NYC, will hit you with any coverage he was able to either 1) document, [...]
