Man Man are back this week with a pair of local shows in support of their newest release, Life Fantastic. Their first stop is at the Glass House on Wednesday, Oct. 26 before Man Man plays on Thursday, Oct. 27...

Definitely one of the "it" shows at Pop Montreal on September 23, 2011. A sold out show with tUnE-yArDs , Pat Jordache and Touchy Mob at the Ukrainian Federation. Very anticipated show because it was tUnE-yArDs. This was the only time this year that I went to a show at Ukrainian Federation and there is something special about that venue. The show started off with Berlin's Touchy Mob. A solo guy who plays a mix of electronica and dancey music. I [...]

All Photos by Philip Cosores The Los Angeles Ukrainian Center is not a venue that has gigs very often. The last one of note (to readers of this site) was Arcade Fire's secret show back in February. And, after experiencing a show in that strange venue on Wednesday night, it seems both a shame and a relief that there are not more there. A shame because the Los Angeles Ukrainian Center is stunning, almost a shrine to whatever's going on with in it (on this occasion a lot of loud music). On the other hand it's [...]

Not very lonesome, but I thought you might appreciate listening to the Ukranians lead track from their 1992 Pisni Iz The Smiths EP, in which the Smiths are mangled to fantastic effect and everyone feels the need to shout Hoi! Listen: Batyar (Bigmouth Strikes Again)

So the earlier post on DES A BODA was just to let you know about the single. Now, the Teen Daze -headed digital label Cultus Vibes has posted the full EP. The track below, Hunter/Gatherer is incredible. It picks you up with some heinous synth strings before the bass drops into a sort of pleasant bastardization of house. Then, the bass clears out for a little bit before swarming back in and pure dubstep carries you to the rest of the track where you wonder where you are for a second or two. [...]

Daily Doses: Des A Boda "Ponytail" From Ukrainian Pearl (2011) You're blowing up, that's good, fantastic. Cultus Vibes is establishing quite the lineup. The latest "acquisition" of "that other canadian collective" is Des A Boda who will be releasing their EP through the label some time this month. There are some points in the more sing-centric portions of this track where a little more… tunefulness might be nice. But then there's those moments like the exit from the bridge at around the 2:00 mark, and that kick [...]

I am not cold in the sense that the temperature is all that low, more in the sense that I have been just a little too chilly for a few hours now and it is really starting to get me down. Moan moan. Song, by Eeyore etc etc. Anyhow, Cellar 35 in Aberdeen was excellent last night - what a top wee space. It is basically just a scruffy basement, but they've got a couple of carpets down and sofas and the atmosphere is really, really nice. It helps a great deal that the staff were [...]

Võtame värskeimast muusikast taas puhkuse ja piilume ajalukku, täpsemalt 1990-ndate algusesse, mil Londoni bänd The Ukrainians salvestas neli ukrainakeelset The Smithsi coverit. Sealt [...]
The Ukrainians - "Koroleva Ne Polerma (The Queen Is Dead)" Everything about this song should make you curious. It's the essential song from The Smiths, covered by a band from the UK that has performed in a traditional Ukrainian style music since the early 90s. In 1992 the aptly named band took 4 Smiths songs and covered them for their release, Pisni iz The Smiths . I only regret that it has taken me 18 years to share it with you. — courtneyj [...]

The father of the Ukrainian boy whom Sir Elton John wants to adopt has said he can have his son if he can come to the UK as well. Sir Elton, 62, expressed his desire to adopt the 15-month-old lad, Lev, and his dad Sergey, 31, has now said that Sir Elton could pay for him to look after Lev in Britain. He said: "I'm not against the idea of Elton becoming a guardian. I would be willing to meet Elton and talk about it. I don't mind my boy going to Britain to be with [...]

Each song on The Queen is Dead is such a perfect alt-pop gem, listening to the whole album is almost too much. But Morrissey is not about to throw in some filler just to let the listener catch a breath. The indie movement has been trying to replicate this album for the past twenty years. They have yet to succeed. The Ukrainians - The Queen Is Dead Technically, this is not "The Queen Is Dead," but rather "Koroleva Ne Pomerla." Yep, that band name [...]

Ten days ago I went to see Morrissey play the Leisureland in Salthill, Galway. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to write about it until now. This delay was a combination of work, laziness, European rugby and football semi-finals, socialising, and going to the pictures. I went to the gig with my old friend, John, and a brand new one named Laura, who I had had a good chat with at the Morrissey Symposium the previous weekend. John drove up and, after a cup of tea and some cake, the three of us spent a while in Charlie Byrne's [...]

Filed under: Around the World The Ukrainians still aren't. Ukrainians, that is. Closing in on 20 years from its beginning, the band remains what it has always been -- a compelling English folk-rock ensemble, spun off from the Leeds post-punk phenom the Wedding Present to give some boisterous rock-informed treatment to tunes with Ukrainian roots and/or inspiration. And still, with a new album, 'Diaspora' (released by the band's Zirka Records and in the U.S. on Omnium Recordings ), quite good at it, as you can plainly hear in [...]
Well I voted last week for the first time in my life. I can't believe it has taken me until past the age of thirty to finally do this, but there are some slightly mitigating circumstances (read: feeble excuses). Basically, this is only the second time I have been in one place long enough to actually [...]
There are two Ukrainian bands that are not quite from the Ukraine fighting for my attention today. Every time I decide to focus on one, the other one sticks up for itself, so I've plumped for double the value, double the bands. The Ukrainians (the clue's in the name) were something of a John Peel-led side-project phenomenon. In one of the Wedding Present 's numerous Peel sessions, they drafted in (at the behest of guitarist Peter Solowka) a friend, the Legendary Len who added some scratchy folk violin to a session they themed as [...]
