U ltralyd can be said to operate in a sonic landscape that has as much in common with modern contemporary music as wiith drone metal. While their vinyl only release "Renditions" on The Last Record Company label in 2009 and their contribution to our recent "Twenty Centuries Of Stony Sleep" compilation can easily be described as belonging to the former, "Inertiadrome" introduces a more rhythm based, rough edged sound. Well it only stands to reason that there should be some strange overlap between doom and free jazz and the latest incarnation of Ultralyd has found that charred ground. Moving on from their longer, drone based compositions, but not necessarily edging back to their unhinged free jazz beginnings; the band have created a dark and rhythmic record that hinges on doom bass, propulsion and a foreboding howl of baritone sax. This is the stuff. It's loose, it's growly, and it's enthusiastically chaotic; Ultralyd's Pink Mood mixes free-rock bass riffs with a healthy respect for jazz messthetics. Taken from their 2004 album Chromosome Gun , it's got the sonic credibility of great rock music, and the rhythmic intelligence of jazz. The best of both worlds. This Ultralyd track reminds me a lot of God , the short-lived Kevin Martin / Justin Broadrick project from back in the 90s. Take the relentless, crushing groove of the Swans and layer it with avant noise. There's no screaming sax here though, just wailing feedback, though that does turn up elsewhere on the record, more often on the spacier tracks.
