Naming yourself "Bink!" leads one to assume that you were a founding member of Harlem World, not a certified head cracking producer with classics for Lost Boyz, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Kanye West. Hey, who said festival season was over? A certain All Tomorrow's Parties event, the inaugural U.S. I'll Be Your Mirror , just took Asbury Park, New Jersey by storm (sort of literally, but that's okay because it was inside!) and it surely qualifies as a festival. That's right, while every other festival is in its 10th year and booking the same 250 acts as the festival preceding it, ATP just swoops in with an unglamorous but effective idea and declares itself a contender for U.S. festival of the year! At least as far as the [...]
Jeff Mangum has justifiably been getting the lion's share of the attention surrounding the I'll Be Your Mirror festival; when a reclusive indie god comes out of hiding, it's a big deal. But the weekend also marked a long-awaited return for the festival's curators and headliners. Last night, Portishead stepped onstage in the Convention Hall to play their first East Coast show since 1998. Just before they took the stage, their simple P logo appeared on the screen in back of them, and the crowd collectively lost it, and then continued to lose it for the next hour [...]
All Tomorrow's Parties is returning to the US this month for the first Edition of ATP's sister event I'll Be Your Mirror that has been currently held in Japan and the UK. The US edition of I'll Be Your Mirror will be held in Asbury, New Jersey from September 30th to October 2nd. Saturday and Sunday of I'll Be Your Mirror will be curated and headlined by Portishead who will be playing their first shows on the East Coast since 1998. Jeff Magnum will be playing two shows Friday [...]

Other acts include Company Flow, Jeff Mangum, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Cults, Swans, Battles, Shellac, Mogwai, Ultramagnetic MCs, the Horrors plus many more. via [ HipHopBlog ] With Tags: all tomorrows parties , asbury park , Battles [...]

I've listened to the legendary Critical Beatdown a few times in the last few days, and since it is so amazing, and there is so much awesome in this post (Tim Dog, The '89 NBA All-Star Rap done by Ced & Keith!), I figured I couldn't top it, so I'd re-up it. It was originally posted March 1st, 2010 (Olympic Gold Medal Hockey game reference, topical!), but the MC's Ultra never get old, so enjoy! ______________________________ _____________ I kind of wish I had something Canada-related to post on this Monday after the Vancouver Olympics, where [...]

Here's a perfect example of what we were talking about recently with PE & Gil Scott Heron influencing the many borrowing and sampling from the best with a permanent effect on pop music. This can't be denied. Give The Drummer Some MP3 by Ultramagnetic MC's . Not Now James, We're Busy MP3 by Pop Will Eat Itself from This Is The Day...This Is The Hour...This Is This! YO! Whats crackin. Today we have one of my favourite Hip Hop crews of all time. So please enjoy discovering more about them, their music and the music they sampled for some of their best known works. The Ultramagnetic MC's is a hip hop group made up of Kool Keith, Ced Gee, TR Love, and Moe Love. Tim Dog became an unofficial member in 1989. In 1990, DJ Jaycee was added as Roadmanager and backup DJ. A former member, Rooney Roon, was fired following an assault arrest. Beat-boxing legend Rahzel was also involved with the [...]
"Chilling with Chuck Chill Out" one sided acetate. Never pressed to vinyl or on any Ultra Magnetic albums or compilations. This is probably a one of a kind acetate played exclusively by Chuck Chill Out at the beginning of his historic radio mix show in the late 802s on KISS FM. One of the few early ultramagnetic recordings that is slower in tempo. Nice Herbie Hancock break and wild abstract verses from the whole crew. The record was sold for us$2827 on Ebay" Can you imagine dropping almost 3K on one song.. I realize you're [...]

The Portishead-curated All Tomorrow's Parties: I'll Be Your Mirror, happening Sept. 30-Oct.2 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, already looked like the can't-miss live event of the year, what with a live performance from Jeff Mangum, in addition to ...
Shepard Fairey is also DJing the event on Sunday ATP Asbury Park ("I'll Be Your Mirror") has released the second wave of artist announcements including many of Portishead's choices for the bill! We already knew about Jeff Mangum, Bonnie Prince Billy, Shellac, Chavez and more. New additions include, not surprisingly , Portishead-related acts Anika and Beak> (and this time Anika will be performing live and not just DJing ). There's also now a rare reunion of The Pop [...]

Oh the internet. Just when you think you've seen every clip of a chick getting smoked in the face with a tiny watermelon, seen every potential rape auto-tuned into into a dance jam, and found every single old school hip hop album you hadn't heard since you were in Hammer pants, the ole internet reveals something else to turn your head into some much watermelon mush. In my case, it was discovering the Rap Treats section of the hip hop blog nationofmillions.ca . I'd been on this site a few times over the last [...]

Once again we're back on the Old School Tuesday plan, making it back-to-back weeks that our blast of Old School hip hop goodness has been a day delayed, but I'm afraid it couldn't be helped. We had a softball playoff tournament this weekend, and it turns out that when you combine being kind of old with playing 8 softball games in 2 days, you end up kind of sore and pretty much coma-tired. ; So in honour of that softball overload, and because of the fact that the MLB playoffs are looming [...]
DJ Riko - Poppin in Stereo [ mp3 ] Ultramagnetic MCs - Poppa Large The Cars - Moving in Stereo instant classic from Ricky Ricardo APC TOP 10 for sure
This definitely gets a WTF??!?!? There was a time when people from my era revered Kool Keith for being one of the best lyricists in the game, but now?? If he was dead, Ultramag producer, Ced Gee would be turning over in his grave at hearing this and that's taking into account all the bugged out, left-of-center sh-t Keith has done over the course of his career. Kool Keith - "Dick Towel" [ mp3 download links : yousendit | yousendit - alt [...]

I kind of wish I had something Canada-related to post on this Monday after the Vancouver Olympics, where we finished with a record number of Gold Medals, and an upstanding young man from the other side of Halifax Harbour scored a dramatic, Gold Medal goal to cap off the event in style . However, I had this Ultramagnetic MC's post lined up since last week for a couple reasons (not that I would need any reason to post on Critical Beatdown, and in fact I'm sure I've done a similar post in the past, but I care not): [...]

So I was out at a Haiti benefit Sunday night pretty randomly. Fun was had. Don't believe me? Check out the picture of me looking like a complete ass. George actually submitted it to This Is Photo Bomb , so I assume there's a bit of teh funnay involved. Anyhow, there were a slew of DJs involved in this benefit. The next to last one I remember was playing a ton of old school - or as some call it, the Golden Age - hip-hop. So today's post is going to be filled with happy thoughts of [...]
