"Something In the Sky" is a track from the forthcoming Guapo album, Dark Age , which is a project spearheaded by composer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O'Sullivan. I'm most familiar with his work with Guapo and Sunn O))), but I know he's been involved with the last few Ulver albums as well. I'm also familiar with the previous album O'Sullivan dropped under the Mothlite name, the Flax of Reverie, which is a dark, avant chamber music record with a really moody personality. "Something In the Sky" feels like O'Sullivan is changing direction, and it's no surprise considering it's [...]
In the new Justin Oakey-directed Ulver video, for a cover of Beau Brummels' "Magic Hollow," this dude living in Magic Times is following some map and reading some letter and he comes across these two virginal-looking hotties in the wilderness and they're smiling at him and whispering to one another and he follows them back to [...]
Tilburg, Netherlands was the place to be this weekend if you appreciate heavy music AT ALL . It's my 2nd trip to Roadburn , and not likely to be my last. This is the festival that screams community in all the right ways. The festival's head, Walter, crafts a lineup from the roots of doom, rock and riff heavy original rock to the latest avant garde satanic acoustic bands, and it all works! This is the companion post to go with my program airing today, April 19th from Noon-3pm (if you're reading [...]
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Darkthrone's seminal second album, A Blaze In The Northern Sky . As this pretty much makes today the closest thing to a birthday that black metal can claim to have (for the sake of clarity we'll ignore the first wave , yeah?), we're going to be marking the occasion in with a Slaylist seeped in old necro evil. Our selection contains cuts from the greatest Scandinavian (and Finnish, natch natch ) classics ever to sound [...]

Ulver had been due to take the stage half an hour earlier than originally billed, after the unfortunate circumstances that led to Decapitated pulling out of Damnation Festival left a rather large hole in the line-up. Instead they went on just after their original scheduled time. We'd be more annoyed about standing around like lemons [...]

It's been a bit of a slow news day, but thankfully Damnation Festival have come to rescue by announcing the final seven bands of their 2011 line-up, chief among them being Grand Magus. Joining the Swedish metal outift in he final brace of bands to be added to the bill are Cerebral Bore, Conan, A Forest Of Stars, Humanfly, Talons, [...]
This is the final Haunting The Chapel. In case you missed my earlier tweet , I accepted a position at Pitchfork, where I'll be returning as an Editor on Monday, 8/1. "Returning," because I worked there as a Contributing Writer from 2003 to 2008, writing 200+ reviews and then launching the site's metal column Show No Mercy in 2006. To answer what a number of folks have been asking: Yes, Show No Mercy will be back, made better with some things I learned while working on Haunting The Chapel. Since starting Haunting The Chapel at Stereogum [...]

On Ulver's latest album, the band brings on Guapo's and Mothlite's Daniel O'Sullivan as a collaborator. He certainly helps Kristoffer Rygg and company bring the band's sound in a different direction for this new record, but I seriously wonder if it's for the record. I remember being taken by the band's previous album Shadows of the Sun pretty quickly, but this one has me waiting like a train that's not running on time. Is this record for you? Find out in this review. Review: Ulver- Wars of the Roses [...]
Since shedding his black metal skin in the mid '90s, Ulver's central force Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg has continually steered his band's sound into newer, more expansive, and uncompromising territories - a la the William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven & Hell double CD, interior drum and bass soundtracks, Blood Inside 's Bach on jazz, the Pink Floyd, Prince, Dead Can Dance, Sabbath, and Electric Prunes covers, etc. On the band's beautifully chilly eighth studio album War Of The Roses , he offers a new wrinkle: The followup to 20072s brilliant chamber music-inspired Shadows [...]
1. Black Moon 2. Dead Kennedys 3. Ulver 4. Squarepusher 5. Mahavishnu Orchestra
Damnation Festival have announced another three bands that'll be playing the seventh incarnation of the one-day festival - Norwegian avant-garde experimentalists Ulver, the equally Norwegian and experimentalist Shining, and some little old British band called Astrohenge. Maybe you've heard of them? Let's tae a butchers at that updated flyer, shall we? We had an absolute [...]
Our pal Juggalo Bob - the only juggalo who will be saved from the coming clownocaust - wins MVR for the day. He sent us a link to this entry in the blog of Daniel O'Sullivan, which includes photos of O'Sullivan hanging out with his Ulver bandmate, vocalist Kristoffer Rygg... who is wearing one of the [...]

You can never expect the same sound twice from Ulver. They are known for "one of the biggest left-turns" in recent music history, when they switched their sound from black metal ( Nattens Madrigal ) to experimental-industrial electronica ( Themes From William Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell ). In 2007, they gave us Shadows of the Sun , one of the finest ambient albums ever made in my honest opinion. The brilliant use of organ, strings and ethereal voices constructs a beautiful sound-scape. Many people who listen to Shadows [...]

Word's going around the Innertubes that legendary Norwegian experimentalists Ulver have a new album coming out next year. Its name? Critical Geography. So far that's all we know, but as always, we'll keep you posted.
Pyramids with Nadja - "Another War" MP3/download I picked this 12-inch up the other day because it was limited (I got #44 out of 300) and, mainly, because Pyramids were involved. I haven't even heard anything Pyramids have done since their self-titled full length (which I reviewed HERE and love-loved) but man, I was eating [...]
The question of who invaded Britain in prehistoric times was much debated by earlier generations of scholars. Bloody battles were imagined, in which one race virtually exterminated another and populated the country anew. Mysterious "Beaker folk" were said to have arrived in the third millennium B.C. introducing metalwork and burying their chiefs in barrow tombs [...]
