Phosphorescent Exposure For fans of Sonic Youth and Batrider comes Ume (pronounced ooo-may), being touted as one of the hottest new bands on a number of popular American music blogs. The Austin, Texas trio of Lauren Larson (guitar/vocals), Eric Larson (bass) and Jeff Barrera create driving psychedelic pop music drawing heavily on spaced out guitars and catchy but simple drum and bass rhythms. Comparisons to both Sonic Youth and Batrider (and to a certain extent Deerhunter) are evident throughout Ume's music, all possessing a similar [...]

It came, we saw, we heard, they rocked, and just like that, it's over. This year's Free Week presented many more an opportunity to catch as much free music as you could bear in one week, with Transmission Entertainment joining in the 7 day music celebration. Adding Mohawk, Club De Ville, Red 7, and Beauty Bar to the ist of venues participating this year, Transmission's Graham Williams reminded us of the origin of free week. Thursday @ Emo's presented one of the more intriguing line-ups for me. A trio of bands that will surely be on the minds [...]

UME LIVE AT EMO'S Delivering a pummeling performance that rivaled hardcore shoegaze stalwarts, Austin's own Ume celebrated Emo's free week by brining their searing brand of experimental punk rock to a packed inside stage. Showcasing tracks from their new Sunshower EP , the trio blazed through fiery anthems that soared with guitar heroics one moment and seethed with hushed, noodly undertones the next. With the driving rhythms of drummer Jeff Barrera and Eric Larson creating a captivating underlying layer, lead shredder [...]

Ume (ooo-may) will self-release their EP, Sunshower , on February 24th. On the Austin-based trio's new EP, the power of the band's live performances has been properly captured and quite possibly surpassed. Sunshower was recorded by Frenchie Smith at The Bubble studios (Austin,TX) in 2008. The trio consists of Lauren Larson (guitar and vocals), Eric Larson (bass), and Jeff Barrera (drums). Building on the momentum which developed from busy 2007/08 schedule, (which included performances at CMJ, SXSW, [...]
Thursday, January 8, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: I saw Gran Torino the other night. It was pretty good, but the fact that Clint Eastwood sounded like Christian Bale's Batman kind of bothered me. I mean, why is he championed for his two hours of growling when Bale is widely frowned upon for what amounts to roughly five minutes of the same thing? Bizarre, I say! Here's an EP to help me get a little closer to being caught up. Enjoy. : BLK JKS [...]

Song Ume ~ " The Conductor " myspace plays: 3,741 mp3 download Ume is a trio out of Austin. Lauren Larson totally caught off guard on this one. I started listening to "The Conductor" before reading about Ume, so I wasn't expecting a girl to start singing over heavy riffs. I thought it was cool, but then to find out that Lauren was also the one playing the guitar... Awesome! [...]

It's the seventh day of Free Week and Emo's has one of the best shows the week has to offer in our opinion. Emo's : (Inside) El Paso Hot Button, Ume, Harlem, and The Blacks at Emo's. Doors @ 8, Show @ 10. El [...]

I have been really tied up with work and having too much fun at Free Week, but I will commence to regular blogging soon enough. I hate not having a bunch of tunes up here for you to check out. Here are a few things I have been meaning to post: Tonight I'm going to catch SuperLiteBike and Tia Carrera , then Ume and El Paso Hot Button on Thursday . I haven't had a chance to see The Strange Boys since ACL, so I will do that on [...]

CANNIBAL CHEERLEADER IN 2009 Happy New Years Cannibal Cheerleader faithful! Whether you're just tuning in or you're an old-school follower, we'd like you to know that 2009 is going to blow 2008 out of the water here on the blog. We've had more than one 'returning to the fold' post but this one represents a new direction, a dedication to creating new content, new videos, and introducing more new music. The blogosphere collectively suffers from multiple ailments: story-swapping, shameless copying, 'hipster-dom', and a general lack of originality. I'd [...]

Here we are at the end of another year, in fact almost the end of a new decade, and the musicians of the world continue to turn out amazing work. The CD industry continues to slump and digital sales are not filling the gap, yet amazingly I am able to play on average 26 new [...]

Lauren of Ume This is the Pampelmoose edition of the New Music Hour on Portland's 94.7FM. I decided to settle on a theme for this one - female musicians - which is not as facile as it sounds. Just recently I've been thrilled to hear a new breed of female musicians bringing the alt-rock and fronting [...]
Sunday, November 23, 2008 A few administrative details before we start: This will likely be my final regular post for the year, so I'm doing my best to fit in a few last albums. Don't worry though, the whole SOTO family will be hitting the year-end lists pretty hard this year, and I'll be highlighting some of the best local albums of the year. Look for that around mid-December. Got it? Good. Onward and upward: Ume This new EP from Ume [...]
How could I have not known about Ume? An Austin trio fronted by a whirling dervish of singer guitarist who in the standard PR band head shot looks like she wouldn't hurt a fly; yet give her a guitar, a Marshall stack and a mic and stand back, way back. She shreds. They have been [...]

Fun x 3 Fest boast an impressive group of headliners. Trail of Dead, The National, Dead Milkmen and Bad Brains give you more than enough reasons to make your way down to Waterloo Park. But the line up also boasts an impressive group of up and coming acts that are certainly worth your time. Last year saw early afternoon sets from MGMT and White Denim who then went on to... well you know. So who are some of the essentials for 2008? Here are our suggestions... [...]
