I've never been to Bonnaroo. I've always wanted to go but I never had the money/didn't have the time/wasn't impressed by the line up. But I am making it my mission to get down to Tennessee this year for the 'Roo because, dammit, I wanna listen to good music while on lots of drugs. The line up for the Bonnaroo festival has been announced and it's quite a big one this year. Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phish are headlining this year's installment. Other acts including The Beach Boys, Bon Iver, The [...]

According to Forbes , the real winner of the Super Bowl this year was Indianapolis. Fortunately (and unfortunately at times) I was around the downtown area most of the week and it was one big zoo. Saw a few shows, ran into some pro athletes ( Jerome Bettis tapped me on the shoulder at a nightclub, no joke) and overall had a great time, but the real winner in my eyes was the free show UMPH put on the night before the Super Bowl. They brought the energy and even people who were waiting for O.A.R (yeah, them) [...]
Because they love their fans so much (heh), Umphrey's McGee put up their Super Bowl Village set as a free download on their blog. I'm downloading this right away; I haven't dove into any live UM in a while. It looks like Sigur Rós will be returning to the stage with a new album and [...]

HT faves Umphrey's McGee used halftime of the biggest football game of the year, Super Bowl XLVI, to announce the return of their football-themed UMBowl concert . UMBowl III is set for April 27 at Park West in the band's hometown of Chicago. For the third year in a row Umphrey's will play four "quarters," each with a different theme, at an interactive concert in which their fans have a say in aspects of the group's performance. The theme of this year's quarters and ticketing information will be revealed [...]

Last night Chicago-based sextet Umphrey's McGee kicked off their first full tour of 2012 with not one but two performances. In addition to a full two-set show at First Avenue in Minneapolis, the band also played a show billed as "All Night Wrong" at the nearby, and tiny, 7th Street Entry. [via @JeffersonWaful ] Fans attending the All Night Wrong performance were given ballots in advance and told to pick six covers from a lengthy list. Here's the covers from Umphrey's vast repertoire that made the cut... [...]
This is going to be a Super Bowl Weekend...of music. Let's just hope the Black Eyed Peas don't show up. Madonna, on the other hand...

In an interview with Revolutions Live back in May 2002 , Umphrey's McGee noted that several musicians were dying while they were on tour, and there was only one thing they could do in response: play one of the late artist's songs. RL: So, do you guys take into consideration where you are playing, as far as what songs you play? Ryan: Yeah, when we were in L.A. we were like, "We've gotta do Guns-N-Roses (from Indiana) meets Motley Crue (from L.A.)." We did "Dr. Feelgood" into "Paradise City." Jake: L.A.'s [...]

This past week Umphrey's McGee returned to New York City for two sold out performances at the Best Buy Theater. Over the course of the weekend Umphrey's showed why fans have been raving about recent shows. These HT faves are on an upswing and if they keep it up the sky's the limit. In lieu of a standard review, I wanted to point out my ten favorite moments from Friday and Saturday's show, accompanied by the outstanding work of photographer Jeremy Smith . If you're [...]
HT faves Umphrey's McGee returned to New York City this weekend for two sold-out shows at the Best Buy Theater. Last night the Chicago-based sextet celebrated the 14th anniversary of their first performance. For the first song of a two-song encore that closed the run, Umphrey's welcomed longtime collaborator Jennifer Hartswick out to sing At Last in tribute to Etta James, who passed away on Friday . The second song of the encore, JaJunk, was dedicated to tour manager Don Richards, who is leaving the group's employ after Mayan Holidaze. We'll have a [...]

Here are the highlights as I see 'em... My [...]

On Sunday, just before embarking on Jam Cruise 10 ( @jamcruise ), Umphrey's McGee ( @umphreysmcgee ) band members challenged their crew members to a game of "two-hand shove" football. A live nearly play-by-play recap of the action went down on the band's twitter feed during the game, with band members Ryan Stasik ( @ryanstasik ) and Joel Cummins ( @goldlikejoel ) and crew member Jeff Waful ( @jeffersonwaful ) adding a bit of color commentary. Tune in at 2:30 ET today for live tweeting of UM [...]

Within five minutes of boarding the MSC Poesia at Florida's Port Everglades for Jam Cruise 10, I found myself sharing an elevator with John Oates and Bill Kreutzmann . The beauty of Jam Cruise is that both artists and cruisers share the same space and as we embarked on the tenth Jam Cruise the organizers have figured out which acts best embrace this "lack of a wall" between fan and artist and bring those people back each year. Yes, just five minutes in I was experiencing a magic moment with two of my musical heroes, who couldn't [...]

HT faves Umphrey's McGee moved their New Year's Run from its traditional Chicago environment to another Midwest city when they performed at The Pageant in St. Louis on December 29 - 31. One of the scene's best photographers, Tammy Wetzel, was on hand and has contributed 15 gorgeous shots from each night. [All Photos by Tammy Wetzel] Setlists: 12/29 Set One: Jazz Odyssey > Cemetery Walk, August*, Resolution -> Anchor Drops, Tribute to the Spinal Shaft**, Wizard Burial Ground [...]
It's been a while since I've dug into the output coming from the Umphrey's McGee crew, but wow-wee on this video clip of "Ocean Billy" that the band posted on their YouTube channel after New Year's Eve. This has been making the rounds and for good reason. Waful cam, FTW!
