The Flaming Lips, Passion Pit, Suicide head MoogFest 2011

In honoring the late electronic music pioneer Dr. Robert Moog, I will admit that I've never pronounced his name correctly and will hereafter pronounce it properly (rhymes with "vogue"). It will be relatively miniscule gesture compared to MoogFest, a unique and growing festival honoring the doc's vast contributions to the modern musical landscape. After a strong debut at its new location in Asheville, NC last year, MoogFest 2011 boasts a diverse lineup filled with exclusive performances and exciting acts from all walks of genres. Leading the festival this year are The Flaming [...]

Review: Hangout Festival, Day One

Review: Hangout Festival, Day One After enduring a round-trip total of 28 hours in a Rav4 and extreme sunburn, I managed to survive the 2nd annual Hangout Music Festival on the beaches of Gulf Shores, AL. The sold-out festival featured three days of incendiary music, including over 60 acts right on the Gulf Coast. Festival headliners included Paul Simon, Foo Fighters and Widespread Panic, and those were not even the weekend's best sets. Gulf Shores was the epitome of a tacky tourist town; think Myrtle Beach crossed with Wisconsin Dells, with [...]

Jam Cruise reveals 10th anniversary voyage

Over the years, the industry's seen a great influx of music festivals, which has lead to a perversion of sorts to the typical medium: It's no longer just a party in the field. Lately, a few fests have taken things to the sea, going down Lonely Island-style (hint: On a Boat! ). Yet before the likes of 311 and Kid Rock were hired to serenade folks on the waves, Jam Cruise was the one seafaring festival you could count on. It's the one that started it all. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the MSC [...]

Jam Cruise 10 Lineup Announced!

The lineup for Jam Cruise was announced first thing this morning here on the West Coast, and I couldn't be happier that I've already taken the plunge and pre-booked a cabin for the 10th anniversary of the floating festival that everybody has been raving about for years. This will be my first year on the boat, so I'll be seeing plenty of unbelievably great music all while sailing the seas and partying with my fellow like-minded fans. Can't wait. One of the bigger reveals of the lineup has been the port destinations that [...]

Cover Wars: Fame (David Bowie)

Cover Wars: Fame (David Bowie) Two weeks ago we announced on Twitter - and also right here on HT - that we were taking suggestions for future editions of Cover Wars. Last week, we took the lead from ChefRobD's suggestion and examined five covers of The Crunge by Led Zeppelin. This week, we took the request of DrewPeiner and are looking at covers of Fame by David Bowie. Written by Bowie with a little help from John Lennon, it was released on the 1975 album Young Americans . [...]

Cover Wars: Layla (Derek & The Dominos)

Cover Wars: Layla (Derek & The Dominos) Pattie Boyd man. Has one single woman every been the inspiration for so many epic rock songs? We're talking Bell Bottom Blues ( Cover Wars ), Wonderful Tonight, Something, and believe it or not - a few others as well. Layla was released in 1970 by Derek & The Dominos on their incredible LP Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs . In 1992, Clapton rearranged the tune for MTV Unplugged and took home the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. And it keeps going from there, one of Clapton's arrangements is just a couple of days old, at [...]

Crowdsourcing and the Future of Rock: A Look at Umphrey McGee's UMBowl II Words : Benjamin Slayter and Erin Slayter On Saturday April 2, 2011 the sports bars and pubs of Chicago were packed with fans: some came to watch the NCAA basketball finals, others were in town to catch the Cubs opening homestand and a few watched U.S. Women's soccer fall to England. Right alongside those diehards was a group of fans gearing up for a sporting event unlike those others, Umphrey's McGee's UMBowl II. The event, held at the Park West, was the latest offering in interactive concert experiences from improvisational gurus Umphrey's McGee [...]

Bloggy Goodness: Superfan #99

Bloggy Goodness: Superfan #99 Last month NPR Music's blog The Record kicked off a series called That's What Fans Are F0r in an effort to look "at the ways the support of fans makes its way to musician" - tackling topics like Crowdfunding, the power of social media and buying a band's album at the merch table versus digital outlets or brick and mortar stores. While we've been loving all these posts the one that went up yesterday was the icing on the cake - So You Think You're A Superfan? Readers were asked to submit their [...]
