In honoring the late electronic music pioneer Dr. Robert Moog, I will admit that I've never pronounced his name correctly and will hereafter pronounce it properly (rhymes with "vogue"). It will be relatively miniscule gesture compared to MoogFest, a unique and growing festival honoring the doc's vast contributions to the modern musical landscape. After enduring a round-trip total of 28 hours in a Rav4 and extreme sunburn, I managed to survive the 2nd annual Hangout Music Festival on the beaches of Gulf Shores, AL. Jam Cruise 10 sets sail from Ft. Lauderdale, FL on January 9 aboard the MSC Poesia and will visit Labadee, Haiti and Falmouth, Jamaica before returning to Ft. Lauderdale on January 14. The Hoxeyville Music Festival returns to the scenic Manistee National Forest in Wellston, MI on August 19-21 boasting a lineup that features HT faves Umphrey's McGee, Greensky Bluegrass and Dumpstaphunk. Umphrey's McGee will be augmented by John Oates of Hall & Oates fame during their late night set at Mountain Jam on Saturday, June 4. Oates first performed with Umphrey's at the Belly Up in Aspen back in February when he joined the band for a cover of Ain't No Sunshine and Chuck Berry's Let It Rock as well as the UM original The Linear. Last weekend at Coachella bassist Scott Devendorf of The National revealed to Spinner.com that his band is putting together a compilation record filled with Grateful Dead covers for the AIDS charity Red Hot. The Spinner-sourced story spread like wildfire with sites as diverse as Pitchfork , The Punk Site and JamBase all filling their readers in on Devendorf's quotes showing the potential this compilation has to bridge the hipster/hippie divide .
