There's quite a collection of Americana big dogs at work on this track: Former Uncle Tupelo co-leader and current Son Volt frontman Ja Farrar, My Morning Jacket main man Yim Yames (or, as most of us still know him, Jim James), Centro-matic leader Will Jonson, and Gob Iron guy Anders Parker, as well as the ghost of Woody Guthrie. I'm going to have to add so many tags to this post! Here's the story: Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora invited all these musicians to pick through Guthrie's notebooks of unrecorded songs, the same way Billy Bragg and Wilco did [...]

Roughly two and a half years ago we reported that Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt), Jim James (MMJ) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) had headed into the studio to a record a new batch of songs inspired by Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics, a la Billy Bragg and Wilco's amazing Mermaid Avenue records. According to Paste , the trio were personally invited by Guthrie's granddaughter, Nora, to sift through the songwriter's notebooks and scratch pads to gain insight on the artist and his unfinished work. On February 28, the trio will [...]

Part two of the Jeff Tweedy solo show from Harper College in 1999. Part one is here . Some great stuff. "Hoodoo Voodoo" as played here is as good as any other version I've ever heard. The "Red Eyed Blue/I Got You" is another highlight. Enjoy. Via Chicago Hoodoo Voodoo Pecan Pie Red Eyed Blue/I Got You Christ For President [...]

One of my all-time favorite live recordings. Part one of two. Look for the second half later this week. Had this show for almost 10 years now and I still listen to it regularly. If I was ever in the highly unlikely situation of being forced to listen to only one Jeff Tweedy / Wilco recording for the rest of my life, there's a legitimate chance this would be it with Being There coming in a very close second. The quality of the recording is top shelf and the set couldnt be better [...]
Of all the upstate NY bands to show promise in the last five years - only to fizzle out - did any show more promise than the Kamikaze Hearts? If there was, I didn't hear them. No other band quite captured the feel of the region quite as well. See, I know upstate NY. I

photo by Scott Alario ALBUM REVIEW: Somewhere in-between a white trash hero and flippant grandpa boy is what indie folkster John McCauley has been repainting. Deer Tick is the story of American Gothic recovering from a binge. If the Deervana stunt is any evidence. He's literally wearing and proud of his choice of flannel rock. I've always been a fan of the music coming out of Providence RI, it's always a little dark and pleasantly seedy. I think they have more Go Go Bars per square mile in their city limits juxtaposed against [...]

We threw a small end of summer bbq that went long into the night. The last few stragglers that remained into the twilight all gathered around the firepit with a drink, and we started playing my favorite game, one that I love to think I invented. It's basically giving everybody a chance to be the DJ for a song, a mix between a jukebox, and that game where you start telling a story and then the next person finishes. I love ...

Despite all the critical press and legions of faithful fans, there's fewer Uncle Tupelo and Wilco cover versions out there than you would expect. On the occasion of Jeff Tweedy's 44th birthday we dig up a handful to share with you.
While Jeff Tweedy went on to have the more lucrative post Uncle Tupelo career, Jay Farrar isn't without his fair share of gems.

Rebel Rebel-Tegan and Sara Pablo Picasso (Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers Cover Live Session Version)-Iggy Pop I Wanna Be Your Dog (Iggy Pop)-Uncle Tupelo John, I'm only dancing-Vivian Girls It Ain't Easy (acoustic) (david bowie)-Raconteurs
The final track from their deput EP sets the tone for what turns out to be a heck of a run.
well, howdy! this seems like an interesting find by non-other than mary lou lord . she found this footage while going through her dearly departed friend and boston native billy ruane's archives. its uncle tupelo playing at the middle east on 10.23.1990. i have never seen footage from this show, but that doesnt mean much. hopefully theres more, and it sounds as if there might be. --> <!--

whats up peoples? dont think i have mentioned it before, but you may have noticed that banner thing over there for groopease . if you havent bothered clicking it, what it is is a groupon-like music site. every day or every other day or two, they have sales on records by emerging artists or unsigned artists. i have checked out a few of the bands offered thus far, and theyve definitely been worth the two or three bucks it costs to buy their record. its invite only, but if you click that banner, my invite code will be used. [...]

I need some more. One of these things is not like the others. Can you guess which one? (this picture has nothing to do with anything... but Britney's sure got a nice rack here. Much nicer than Henry Rollins' rack). Correct! Uncle Tupelo is the one that doesn't belong... because they are alt-country pussyfucks!!!!!!!

In the pantheon on great "lost" albums, the Beach Boys ' Smile , may be the most sought after by fans. The album was intended be the follow up to the band's seminal 1966 release Pet Sounds . Rumors have swirled for years about the recording sessions for the album, which included a lot of turmoil from within the band and a healthy dose of bizarre behavior from Brian Wilson , eventually leading the album to be officially being scrapped. While songs from the Smile sessions - like Good Vibrations, Surf's Up and [...]
