With all the news both confirmed and unconfirmed about bands reuniting, one thing is certain for now: Uncle Tupelo has played their final show. In St. Louis on May 1, 1994, the final Uncle Tupelo lineup of Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy, Ken Coomer, John Stirratt, and Max Johnston performed their last show at Mississippi Nights. As we all know by now, after the break-up, Tweedy, Coomer, Stirratt, and Johnston began to perform under a new name (maybe you’ve heard of them), while Farrar founded a new band named Son Volt. [...]

Last night, I apparently was on a mission. A mission to tweak my blog ( GHOST of ELECTRICITY ) and add in some FeedFlares, those STUPID little things at the bottom of the posts. What happened at 3 am when I attempted to mess with html? WELL, I erased my template... it's gone. And, for what backups are worth, I already deleted the three previous backups just a week ago. I thought they were taking up space. They were annoying me, so I deleted them. Oh [...]

Slimfit - "Easy To Talk To" mp3 Slimfit- "Which Way You Gonna Go?" mp3 In all of its bare splendor, Lancaster, PA doesn't exactly scream "hotbed for country rock" quite the way that more obvious locales like Nashville and Austin do. But then again, neither did Belleville, Illinois -- the home to alt-country pioneers Uncle Tupelo . And look what happened to them. (You better not have to look.) As long [...]
Friday, November 14, 2008 Well it’s been a weird week here on Side One Track One, so it should hardly come as a surprise my temporary one-day promotion to Friday editorial content director. Your usual host unfortunately had business at the radio station early this morning, so I’m filling in and making up for my missed post last weekend. Speaking of last weekend, in case you didn’t know, Austin was graced by Fun Fun Cough-Up-A-Lung Fest, which I still haven’t quite recovered from (seriously, I’m fighting back a pretty determined [...]

Have been playing this blistering boot a lot lately, and I keep wondering why on earth it hasn´t gotten an official release just yet. The time sure seems right as the Uncle Tupelo legend lives on. They may not exactly have gotten the popularity they deserved during their existence (´87-´94), but nowadays almost everybody knows they more or less single-handedly defined the alt country genre, while the trio´s legacy keeps influencing loads of young gunslingers with loud guitars and crazy honky tonk hearts everywhere. Their back catalogue has been milked pretty [...]

There's something special about duets with male and female voices. The contrast of sounds is pleasing to my ears. I especially like the ones where the vocalists are having a conversation through song - a musical he said/she said. Below are 20 of my favorite boy/girl duets, listed in chronological order. Well, at least they're my favorites as of today. What are some of your favorites? "Tramp" by Otis Redding & Carla Thomas (1967) [...]
The Rules: I reset the play counters for all the songs currently on my iTunes. Then at the end of every week, I check to see what the top five most played songs are. Whatever happens to be in this top five are then presented in order here from most played [...]

The very first Uncle Tupelo song I ever heard was "Moonshiner." Wow, what a vocal performance by Jay Farrar. It blew me away. I would listen to that one track on repeat for hours and hours. "Moonshiner" is off of the album March 16-20 , an acoustic album produced by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, which contains original Uncle Tupleo tracks along with reworkings of traditional folk and country songs. Uncle Tupelo - Moonshiner.mp3 Buy: March 16-20, 1992 (1992, reissued 2003) [...]
What a week! Who needs a soul cleansing Jay Farrar bender? I do! For background on Jay Farrar, see Jay Farrar Friday (1) . From Uncle Tupelo's first record, the title coming from the Carter family classic. This album combines rock, punk, and country, and describes the desperateness of growing up broke, bored, and disillusioned in the rural Midwest. This landmark album launched a new chapter in Americana music. There's nothing left now but broken [...]

I’m proud to bring you a feature on the newest music blog on the scene – one that conveniently has 13 years of experience. No Depression Magazine ceased publication in April of this year and this week unveiled its re-vamped website – which by many standards can be considered a music blog. No Depression was the foremost authority on all things alternative country since 1994, bringing you stories on artists from Son Volt to Buddy Miller and everyone in between. Although the magazine’s readership remained strong, the [...]

Via Christian Schaeffer, expert Craigslist searcher: Someone is selling Jeff Tweedy's first bass cabinet, which he used in the Primitives/Uncle Tupelo days, via this Craigslist ad : I hate to do this, but after holding onto this thing for almost 20 years, I may have to get rid of Jeff Tweedy's first bass cabinet, played in the early Primitives Days and the earliest Uncle Tupelo gigs in the 80's. Jeff took this up to B&G music as trade for some better gear in the late 80's, at which time my friend Joe snagged it for use [...]

Six More Drinking Songs A few week's ago I posted half a dozen songs about booze . In reponse a few people suggested their own favourites , so here they are - plus one more of mine. (Apologies to Sam Jordison , I tried and failed to find a copy of your suggestion, The Dubliners' Jar of Porter. It would have been a nice tribute to the owner of folk music's greatest facial hair ). MP3: [...]
