Denmark's Under Byen (pronounced Oh'nah-Boon) features Henriette Sennenvaldt (vocals), Stine Sørensen (drums), Sara Saxild (bass), Nils Grøndahl (violin), Morten Larsen (drums), Anders Stochholm (kalimba), Morten Svenstrup (cello), and Thorbjørn Krogshede (piano). The experimental electronic collective came together in 1995 and spent the next few years shaping a hypnotic sound that's similar to Sigur Rós and Björk. It wasn't long until Under Byen took their homeland by storm, and in 1998 they became the first act signed to the Danish indie imprint have a cigar. Their stunning debut album, Kyst, was warmly received and earned several Danish music awards, [...]
The wind is present late at night, there is a slight cold rain and you have spent an entire evening in various empty pubs on the outskirts of any given sketchy downtown area. As you finish your last stop with a stiff drink, you realize you haven't talked to anyone for hours. Fold up your coat collars and prepare to walk home folks... This song starts as soon as the pub door slams
Today would be the one year mark for this site's existence. Perusing the archives you can see a little bit of paradigm shifting in musical taste which is a good thing I guess. According to the site traffic and feed stats we actually have an audience and actual readership (which isn't that much but its still p cool). So thanks for making chinese restaurant in the forest* relevant. Special thanks to Squashed , Moka , Funtime OK , mp3blog.ch , Shay , boomawang , bbqchickenrobot [...]

I need to thank David Byrne for tipping me off to Under Byen. And more thanks is overdue to Mr. Byrne for tipping me off years ago to a tasty soup special at Shopsins, back when Kenny & Co. were at their original location (I'm dying to see "I Like Killing Flies," dying harder actually for a plate of Slutty Cakes and a tall tumbler of their Horchata!). Under Byen is a Danish ensemble, who maneuver orchestrally, and percussively, in the dark end of the pop music spectrum. Beautiful, hushed vocals draw you in and keep you warm [...]

Akron/Family play at the First Baptist Church on Friday This Sunday at Zaphod's, there's yet another indiescene veteran in town(in addition to Yo La Tengo last week), Giant Sand . The 20+ year-old Tucson indie rock band features Howe Gelb , who has an unlikely number of Ottawa connections: his latest solo album, 'Sno Angel Like You , was inspired by a winter-time trip to Ottawa and a Bluesfest set at a church with local singer-songwriter Jim Bryson and gospel choirs. Not only was the album inspired by [...]

"The sound of The Autumn Project is something of a familiar one, reminiscent of Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Isis and Mogwai but still original, fresh and unadulterated. Dynamics, melody, and emotion are the three most important qualities of an Autumn project [...]

Under Byen at Vega - Copenhagen 2006, courtesy of Stig Nygaard "This Danish band’s 3rd album (and 1st US release) is an evocative set of atmospheric songs blending elements of post-rock, classical and more in ways similar to Sigur Ros, but with more nods to both pop song craft and rock aggression. Dark, moody soundscapes and clanging percussion are combined with ethereal melodies and lead vocalist Henriette Sennenvaldt’s Bjorkian vocals." - Don Yates Samme Stof Som Stof is due out in North America this week. [...]

DOWNLOAD (MP3s) Hjertebarn Plantage Af samme stof som stof Fans of Sigur Ros, Bjork & other stuff will want to check out Danish band Under Byen , signed to Paperbag Records (Canadian home of Tokyo Police Club & Magneta Lane) at the end of July, and dubbed "band to watch" by Stereogum soon after, this Danish eight-piece is about to visit North America. "Giant Sand are [...]
I have been meaning to post about Denmark's Under Byen for a long time, even before I posted Simon's fawning review of their most recent album "Samme stof som stof". Now that said record is getting a US release via Paperbag later this month, I figure I might as well get this done. Trouble is, I don't find myself nearly as wowed as Simon or many of the other folks who've been weighing in on the band lately. The music itself is very aesthetically pleasing - I love the clattering percussion, breathy vocals and diverse pallet of extra instrumentation. It's [...]
HEY - BEFORE YOU SCROLL DOWN!!! Remember to download This Time ( tWAMi Remix) by Green Concorde . It's fantastic!! In this post I'll post (older) songs that are ok, but I don't feel like writing about (at least not right now) or some of my 2006 favorites that I've mentioned before (so no point in writing a longer introduction again)... A few 2006 favorites: + Anamia - Butterfly In Paris + Kind Of [...]

When I went on my Scandanavian theme week back in mid- May , I was a little confounded about how I came up empty for decent or interesting Danish bands. I mean, I didn't look THAT hard, but certainly couldn't think of any I wanted to write about off the top of my head. First off, I have to confess that their famously awful album art kept me from listening to Mew's And the Glass Handed Kites for... I [...]

Musik paa Danske Laeber Beyond the city you'll find the bitter sweet sound of traffic that will make you believe in magic once more. Either that, or you'll want to learn danish. As the Monty Python boys said, now's time for something different. And, I don't mean a variation on a theme this time. I mean something completely different. Something that you may not have thought of before. Ladies and Gentleman, I introduce to you...Under Byen. The most haunting band you've ever heard. And [...]
I'm back in the saddle again, as Steve Tyler used to say back in the seventies, though he maybe can't remember it. I've been in Denmark these last couple of weeks, living with the wasps on the campsites (not the Danish band Campsite ), depending on my mp3 player for entertainment in the daylight and pitch black, while existing without internet, TV and typical home comforts. But we all need a break from the keyboard sometime, so it's refreshing to unplug yourself. And it's always nice to be completely oblivious to the usual madness going on in the world. [...]
On repeat today is the Danish eight-piece Under Byen (pronounced "ohna boon," but you knew that). At times they recall Björk, Mogwai, and Tortoise, but ultimately it's unlike everything else I'm listening to these days. Like their MySpace page says,...
