Something that I find myself doing less and less nowadays in regards to blogging is reading emails. When I first started this blog and received my first handful of emails, I was ecstatic that someone would actually send me their stuff to listen to. Those times were new and exciting, and I would read nearly every piece of email that would come my way. This was when I actually had time to do this, and my inbox wasn't the overflowing mess that it is now. Usually, around every month or so, I look at my email [...]
Pop Levi: in living colour, and on hand-held cams. (photo via Myspace) It's about as lo-tech as cinema can get: Pop music king-in-the-making, Pop Levi has announced the premiere screening of his new film, You Don't Gotta Run , a film shot entirely on cell phones and pocket cameras, chronicling his recent European press tour in support of his latest album, Never Never Love . He's showing this "ever-warm psychedelic fuzz-montage" at Hollywood's Silent Theater on Monday, November 24, to be followed by an acoustic performance by Levi. [...]
Well we're coming to the final few weeks of the Weebly hosted version of Kata Rokkar . I'll fill everyone in on the details once I figure everything out. More to come... I digress. Anyway, this months Unsigned Artists are quite unique in their own right. First up is Sumkid ; a LA MC with a P.O.S./Doomtree -like flow. His new song " Chuck Norris on Drugs " is a list of modern day issues that probably won't wind up on Chuck Norris' list of awesomeness. However, the song itself is [...]

Danny Provencher is one of those DIY musicians that really should be heard more. Unfortunately, he lives in a town where great bands pop up every day and finding your stride is not an easy process. He performs as Under the Light , and you can easily settle into his 80/90's inspired fuzz. I could start naming bands - New Order would be my first jump off point or maybe Ride - but I'd rather just talk about the blissful melancholy his songs create. Countless acts try to put together the simple notes [...]

I kind of liked my new way of getting the "things to do"-list shorter, with my fast-blogging post "shorties" last week. I will do it from time to time, when there is too much to write about and too little time to do it. Here are some of the interesting things that I just need to get out to you people: Sweden's [ingenting] is working on a new album these days, their third. The album has a working title, "tomhet, idel tomhet", [...]

A cool artist who recently contacted us is Under Electric Light . This is a one man band consisting of Danny Provencher from Montreal, Quebec . I love that word, Quebec... Nice ring to it. Anyways this guy does some killer down-tempo pop music all by his lonesome. He sent me two tracks 'Night Out' from his Blue EP and 'Wintertime' from his appropriately named album 'After the Blue' and they're both killer! Great late-night fare, especially while smoking some special cigarettes and unwinding at the pad :) [...]
I've got a small window of free time to fire this one off, so advanced apologies for inevitable typos. Speed trumps accuracy today... I am truly happy to have just discovered the music of (and by "discovered" I mean "been sent an email from") Danny Provencher, aka Under Electric Light. The Montrealer (I prefer "Montrealist") has been self-releasing his own EPs for a couple of years, and it's

Being stuck in any type of transit purgatory requires custom audio - something underground and in between just like you. With a fuzzy flourescent hum above nu-order synth and percussion, Montreal's aptly-named Under Electric Light are sleeping on the bench across from you. Try "Night Out" while waiting for the next whatever. Under Electric Light - Night Out [...]

Under electric Light : After the Blue EP (Self released) It' starting with an Interpol-like bass/drums mid tempo maneuver but after just 15 seconds, Danny Provencher's cushy voice draws your attention...33 seconds later, the guitar enters the show, like an hypnotic bass variation...33 seconds later again, the keyboard finishes off to give the utmost perfect shape to the ultimate crowning half of the first song ... and this EP in itself is a full-time sacrament... Like the Radio Dept., Montreal's one-man band " Under electric Light [...]

Danny Provencher began making music as a child secretly singing over records (something I still do, not so secretly, as a full-grown man, often over records I only hear in my head). At some point he committed his music to record, leaving out, ironically, his vocals. The earliest recording as Under Electric Light features four synth-pop instrumentals that sound like a mix between early Depeche Mode beats awash in New Order melodies. From my not-so-scientific investigation, Provencher didn't come out of the proverbial vocal closet until about three years later. The result is a clean, dreamy, earnest style free from [...]

Under Electric Light is a one-man project under the direction of Montreal musician Dan Provencher. Dan mixes in electronic elements into his music and has influences of New Order, Death Cab for Cutie and the Shout Out Louds to name a few. There is however one outlining difference to these pop bands. Under Electric Light's music is more soothing and doesn't try to get grab your attention it just seeps into your brain and comfortably latches on. With Dan's very soft/deep voice Under Electric Light gives off a different vibe and ultimately the type that I [...]
Last time we checked Montreal's Under Electric Light was heading down a dream pop path that affected nice things onto the pit of our collective stomachs. Almost 3 years on and I'm glad to report that nothing much has changed, Danny Provencher is still infatuated with the early 90's and his softly floating pieces of dream pop illuminate his latest offering the 'After The Blue' EP. I wonder how

Porto [...]

Canada seems good at a number fo things, but lately it's turning out electro-pop duos of the highest order. Joining Junior Boys in these ranks is Montreal's Under Electric Light, consisting of founder Danny Provencher and his partner in chime, Mathieu Rodier. There's been a series of EPs released as UEL has honed their craft, butthe late addition of lyrics and vocals has shone a new light on their intrumental tweaking. Lyrics are happily supplied by poet and songwriter Meb, and the fruits of this new collaboration are available on Never See The Light EP [...]
