Twenty years (or so) in, the seminal techno act releases two very different compilations. Both succeed on their own terms. Not everybody is around for 20 years or more, and not everybody who makes it that far deserves much of a commemoration. Bjork's 1993 "Debut" album was a lovely piece of left of centre pop music and the tracks fell into the hands of some of the best producers in electronic music for remix work. UK electronic duo Underworld have put together two different career-spanning anthologies, as Exclaim points out. The first, titled A Collection , is a sparse affair, compiling the group's radio-edited work with a handful of collaborative tracks. A couple of contrasting dnb remixes of Underworld's classic Born Slippy. First, London Elektricity from 2003. Second Alex Reece from 1996. London Elektricity provide a swaggering mix. This keeps much of the early vocals to make it recognisably Underworld before taking off down a loose limbed funky path of its own. Really like this version. Alex Reece's version never appealed. Underworld have been announced as Music Directors for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games . Underworld's Rick Smith and Karl Hyde join artist director Danny Boyle for the event for a three-hour ceremony on July 27th. Today's Live Performance comes from British electronica trio Underworld, in the news this week since they were elected to be "Musical Director" of the upcoming London 2012 Olympics. It's videos like this that wasteful Friday afternoons are made for. BBC show This Week decided to announce the news that Underworld had been named the musical directors of the 2012 Olympics in a rather.... unique way. Underworld doing the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Almost made my 4.20am start yesterday worth it. And who'd have thought when I saw them at Burgess Park in the early 90s that it would come to this. Mind you, given a choice, I'd have preferred Orbital - imagine the Olypmics closing to Wasted/Belfast. Alternatively, The Orb would have been ok.
