Today's Live Performance comes from British electronica trio Underworld, in the news this week since they were elected to be "Musical Director" of the upcoming London 2012 Olympics. And who'd have thought when I saw them at Burgess Park in the early 90s that it would come to this. I can't ever help being a sucker for the Olympics ; I blame Jim McKay . Especially the opening ceremonies, which are generally an exercise in making billions of people look at an avant-garde art exhibition. Often, they'll wonder why it is they're watching, but they certainly watch. I try not to ever miss them, myself. Coming on top of news that Elbow would act as composers for an Olympic promo song , Underworld has been announced as musical directors for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London games. Is this going to be the best music ever at an Olympics? Possibly. A press release reveals that the duo of Underworld, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde, will work alongside Danny Boyle, artistic director of the ceremony, to create three hours of music to soundtrack the complete opening ceremony, taking place on July 27th of next year.

UK electro titans Underworld have been hired as musical directors for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, as BBC News reports. Every year we go to Candlefest. The Underworld, with all its delicious beer and heavy metal, is a wonderful way to spend an autumn day. We rocked it.

Either I first heard this on one of J's splendid tapes which he frequently conjured up after returning from a night out ('Hey! It's 8am, we're shit-faced, let's do a tape!') or on a white label. I forget which. I do recall that I had no idea who it was or what it was called but that it was fucking great. A hugely danceable, motor-powered slice of techno from Emerson and Co that opens with Hyde's nonsensical lyrical outpouring riding a scratchy, twanging beat before rapidly escalating into a belter of a track with a break halfway through that, to this day, still gives me the chills.
